FORIN EBAY. How do they work?

Hi shitterZ

I'd like to browse EU ebay but it's a pain in the ass since I don't speak Spanish or French (I barely speak English) is there an easy way of doing it? Will I be allowed to bid on shite in a different country?

I have a fab idea that involves flying to Spain or somewhere and driving back some rust free mintola chod that would obv be very cheap as they hate old cars over there (or something).. even MK1 2 door Escorts and the like.

A 2 door Mk2 Granada would be nice...

Anyway, does anybody have any infoor advice?

Do it all the time. Just log on, same ID as your Uk one, find what you want & ' watch it'. It will appear on your uk sheet.

If they have agreed to uk postage, settle up as usual. If it's a car,or overseas option not pressed, EBay will not let you bid, from Uk. You need to contact the seller, either yo deal ' off site', or change the postage options.

I can't navigate the foreign ebays though, as I have no idea what anything means. Do they have their version of ebay motors?

In Austria for example, Ebay is not the place to look for old cars. Only all the junk that can´t get sold at dealers and on the used-car-platforms in the internet ends up on Ebay.

I dont know how other european countries work, but looking for advertised cars on used-car-internet-platforms may be the better way to find something nice.

I bought some LHD European Focus parts for a friend in California, I used Google Translate to find the words I wanted and plumbed them into eBay.de

Ebay.fr is rubbish for cars as the French don't really do ebay, Leboncoin is far better. Just work out what the keyword you want is in the language of the site you are searching. A lot of the sales sites use similar searches in different languages so you will soon get the hang of it.

Open another window and have a translator ready like babelfish or something similar.  You can copy the text an have it translated into Unglish - it will be rough, but should give you an idea of what's going on.

Here's Espanol ebay for motors:

I buy parts from ebay.it and ebay.de all the time. If they don't specify postage to UK I ask.

Also google translate is your friend  https://translate.google.com/

I do use yahoo auctions in Japan occasionally, but buying from there is a tad more complicated (and a lot more expensive) so only when I need stuff I can't get anywhere else. https://www.rinkya.com/en

ebay.fr has under 200 cars for sale. www.leboncoin.fr is the best bet.

portugal has www.custojusto.pt which is the same as LBC, and spain had secundamano.es but that seems to have been taken over by some other site now with a confusing layout.

If you use Google Chrome as your browser, it should automatically offer to translate the pages.

Certainly works for me. It comes out in pidgin English at times, but its urdu is better than most people's english.

Good luck.

Treat it like you would with any forriner. You speak loudly and clearly with lots of arm waving ( whilst trying not to spill you tin of wife beater on your Man Utd shirt). If forrin fleabay doesn't understand you then their computer just isn't trying hard enough! Drink more beer and then shout even louder and more gesticulating at the screen!

Computer translator sometimes gives you a comedy act as well, such as telling you "cows on the seats are black"!

I think the weirdest translations of car descriptions could form an interesting new thread.

Apart from ebay there are plenty other foreign sites for buying cars, most get mentioned on the tat thread...

http://www.mobile.de/(Germany)

http://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/offres/(France)

http://www.custojusto.pt/portugal/veiculos(Portugal)

Then it's the joy of contacting people in foreign lands ... email using google translate is a last resort, getting someone who speaks the lingo to telephone is much more preferable
