Coolant System Experiment..How to clean it out?

I've used steam cleaner detergent to clean out cooling system gunge after oil cooler leakage with good success and no disasters. Yet.

Biological washing powder > dishwasher tablets.

Remember bio designed to work at low temperatures, so don't get it beyond 40 deg C as this will kill the good bacteria.

Don't use citric acid, it reacts with Aluminium and makes a bloody mess, Its an effective descaler and works brilliantly on stainless, I use a lot at work and thought I'd clean my flask with it, had to buy a new flask, then forgot and did it again 6 months later, bought another flask :D

would pouring a bottle of cillit bang into a freshly flushed and filled with water system be a do or die scenario?

If it then OMGSPLURTED it would clean the engine bay as it went, win win...

We do coolant flushes on our Volvo B10Ms using a 50/50 mix of water and TFR, normally left to run for at least three days though one of them ran for the best part of a month 'cos we forgot to drain it again.

Should be fine with a dishwasher tablet in the XUD, mine ran for a month with one in, and I think it was still in when I did Crail.

Sodium Metasilicate has been used to flush it out too, but only a flush not running with it in.

If you think about the thickness of alloy the alkaline has to eat through for it to escape from the head (a minimum of 3-4mm ish) and consider how much water you are adding to dilute the alkaline, I don't think there is any need for concern if your just flushing.

Flushing with water is absolutely crap compared to the Bollox method of dishwasher machine tablet.

Put tablet in small plastic bag, and wrap bag in a rag. Use a lump hammer to break up the tablet into crumbs. Pour into header tank and top up with fresh water. Run till hot. Empty out and flush.

If you have ever cleaned beer lines you will understand, they look clean and water comes through absolutely clear, but when you add a mild alkaline the amount of shit that comes out is unbelievable!

Good luck.

I'm not sure I want to stick the same thing in my radiator as I do in my 'dishwasher', although it could be an interesting alternative to Woolarding.

Hard water area? Most areas of Scotland have soft water and you don't need dishwasher salt.

Someone on the fiat forum wanted to clean his header tank and did the dishwasher tab trick which I thought was a crazy idea.

He did it anyway.

Fucksticks - that's the brown panda I just bought :(

You not connecting it all together and running a very fast idle for 30 mins? Then drain, refill with water then another 30 mins on a rinse cycle?

Would adding dry rice blast all the caked on stuff off or does it not work like that?

I was in Aldis yesterday and they were selling bottles of descaler-to be used in kettles, irons etc.

I bet this will remove the crap from a heater matrix-will give it a go when I get the car back.

suffice to say it seemed to do the job..

could likely do with another flush, but much better than it was
