Delightfully Shambolic Jaguar XJ40 - Back to Magnificent

Incidentally, aside from spending £18 on an eBay brochure (I think not!) is there anywhere I can find out what equipment this car has?  Googling has not produced anything much, it's just out of curiosity really, I have never owned - or even actually been in, thinking about it - a luxury car before so this is doubly exciting.

Don't forget. Pictures or it ain't real!

Quite magnificent, well done Sir, I have great fondness for my old '40's, especially the Daimler four litre, I'm sure you will love the whole experience 8)

What it has is not the issue - it's what still works that matters.

IIRC, side strips were £360 - a dealer fit option

wood gearknob was £60 - also dealer fit. There were several styles, but this one looks a bit like an x300 one to me. I could be wrong!!

delivery and registration plates were £400

These are all 1992 prices -  so your car would have been slightly more expensive than this.

I have the brochure for the 1993MY (an Oct 1992 brochure) - if I can find it, I could scan it if you like?

Looking at the price list, it misses off/takes for granted quite a bit of equipment. The 4.0 Sovereign had:

Air bags - driver and front passenger (1994MY)

Air conditioning - full climate control

ABS brakes with yaw control

Alloy wheels - 16" (1994MY)

Automatic transmission with 3 modes

Burr walnut facia, door cappings, switch packs, centre console, with inlay

Central locking including boot and fuel filler: doors unlocked/locked with alarm fob together with courtesy headlight operation form keyfob

courtesy light delay

cruise control

Electric aerial

4 Electric windows

2 electric heated rear view mirrors

Electric remote boot release

Electric front seats with ten way adjustment including electrically adjusted head restraints. Electrically operated lumbar support and 2 position memory.

Heated windscreen washers

High power audio system with RDS and 8 speakers

Illuminated sunvisors

Kerb illumination on all doors

Leather trim

Metallic paint

Rear reading lights

Stainless steel door frames

That's glorious Phil, I'm quite jealous. Will it fit or your drive?

It looks like the pics were taken in July or something, I wonder what the score is there.

Not a hope of it fitting on my drive, the 214 will just fit by almost touching the garage door and still sticks out a couple of inches. It'll have to live on the road but at least it's a quiet road with very little traffic. I might even get it a decent car cover.

Thanks MB, that's great! As Bren says, I don't know how much will still work but cruise control is nice for long journeys. As long as the engine and gearbox are healthy and the seats still adjust so I can actually drive it then anything else will be a bonus.

Subscribed, you lucky devil.

I'm sending a wish for clear roads and steady temperature gauges for you!

When the oil pressure light comes on and flickers alarmingly, chances are it's just the shit switch/sensor that one can upgrade for the later one, which just sits rock solid at half - basically as much use as if one had disconnected it and thrown the old one away - the engine is amazingly tough, and if it seems to be driving as normal, then it is fine and can be ignored, which I did with mine for a good three years - in fact after a while it became a welcome part of the jaguar experience, true shite motoring in it's purest form I like to think :-P

Best of luck with it fella.  Hope the collection goes well and that it turns out to be a good 'un.  Because a good XJ40 is truly a wonderful thing to own.

I think every person driving an XJ40 (and AJ6 engined XJ-S too, I imagine) has been given the fear by the oil pressure sender at least once!

I fixed mine by cleaning the contacts up with very fine sandpaper. The sender has worked properly now for a year or two. Before that it had a pronounced nervous twitch every time the engine reached full temperature. But it did go down fully to zero more than once - oil light on, the works!

I didn't know at the time that real oil pressure problems were almost unheard of on the AJ6 engine - so, completely spooked, I took my '40 to a main dealer to have it checked out.

The mechanic told me, 'they all do that sir!' - I made sceptical noises, so he told me they could change the sender, but the new one was unlikely to be any better - basically, that the sender is crap! To prove it, they did an oil pressure test with an external gauge on my car - the engine oil pressure was exactly at spec. Didn't charge me for it, which was nice of them I thought. This was a while back though, before the dealerships became over run by volume business with the arrival of the S-type and X-type. The ethos of Jag dealers changed after that.

And we're off. Stage 1 successfully completed with a drive to Bristol and the successful exchange of Volvo for money, it's gone to live with a very nice bloke who will be upping its boost and towing his race car with it.

Stage 2 involving a train to Portsmouth in progress. Pasty consumed, good book on the go, Jag taxed and insured ready for tomorrow lunch time.

I recon rather than a pez forecourt shot, an equally suitable alternative would be outside a pub.

All the best, quite jealous here!!!

It was great.

Now it's still great but with less electricity in it. Alternator is my chief suspect, waiting for breakdown service.

This went exactly as suspected.

Hope its an easy fix.

Yup, alternator dead. Being recovered back to Devon by the look of it. Could be worse! I can recommend Autoaid, very good service so far.

That's good, I've recently taken their cover out!

Are you going to hobnob the seller for a couple of quid?

Well that sucks! But the car still looks great even with the bonnet up.

Oh gawd!!!

The alternator is generally reliable on these, so that's annoying. The version you need for this car is the later 120amp Denso alternator, part number DBC6819 and also used on the X300 IIRC

Thanks, that's really helpful, not a bad price either.

It's a cheap old car so these things happen, I've pushed my luck a few times driving cheap old cars long distances home so it was about time for this to happen.

I'm being relayed on two trucks, just waiting for first one to Clackett Lane services and then on to Barnstaple from there. Could be a long evening!
