mrcitroen Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Could never decide if these are just a sad addition loved by rivet counters at car shows. Anyway, I thought it may be a bit of fun and got one made up for the GS. Has anyone else got one made? Got it from a guy on line, Google poplargreg. Looks quite nice, but did not come perforated so I had to do that myself and although the writing is handwritten, it's a bit too perfect. I suppose that makes me a river counter then! I'll get my coat.................... outlaw118 and HMC 2
Vince70 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I would just put a "tax in post" sign in the corner of the windscreen or use a Guinness label. Or if I was feeling really extravagant then I might use a tax disk off another old car with the numbers etched out with a bit of old brake fluid then the new registration written in with a green biro to make it look really authentic. Wasn't there a validation character on the old logbook that also had to be written on the tax disk. Sigmund Fraud, Skizzer and mercrocker 3
mercrocker Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 The shaky handed old bat at my local post office used to tear the selvedge off my discs so that they actually looked worse than that, anyway. I just cannot bring myself to buy something that used to be free (in the case of old chod) and would rather have an original tax disc, regardless of date. However, the advantage of these repros is that when they fade and get damp you haven't lost something that is now expensive to replace. It would actually be better if you can get them just stamped with the PO stamp but left blank. Then a shonky old typewriter can be borrowed to replicate the ransom-demand appearance of a genuine 1970s LVLO issue... Certainly Poplargreg's stuff is a lot cheaper than those repro ones you get at Beaulieu which are just a bloody rip off.
Richard Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I made one up for the Volvo last year and I'll be making one up this year when it runs out. It's not very good (though better than it looks in the photo), I'm going to try and do better next time. Rusty_Rocket 1
strangeangel Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I had a go at this a while back. I wanted a 1986 disc for a scooter of that age. I found one on Google Images, erased the original details using GIMP and added my own, then printed it on my new freebie colour laser. I forgot, of course, that the disc would have been handwritten; I still have the 'clean' copy somewhere and I will produce v2.0 when I get a minute. I'm quite pleased for a first go. The colours look much better than in this pic; I had to take it in the garage with the flash on from about 6". I couldn't get the Honda out because the scoot behind it is currently minus one wheel PS £27.50 was a guess as I've no idea what tax cost on a 250 in 1986, so if anyone knows... Craig the Princess 1
Mr A Lawrence Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Interesting snippet in practical classic mag this month. Apparently, you can still be fined for displaying an out of date tax disc!! Although they didn't know if this is due to the law not being repealed after the changes or due to "vision issues"
Captain Slow Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I wrote that news piece - I'm still digging on it and will of course keep shiters posted. Mr A Lawrence 1
mat_the_cat Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I have one, also from Poplargreg: Pretty pleased with it, although if I was being really picky I would say that the printed one would look better with a dot-matrix printed font:
Angrydicky Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I got a couple from poplargreg. Main problem is they fade REALLY quickly on a car that actually sits outside in the sun and is used all the time. Must be because they're just printed using normal computer ink. Proper tax discs seemed to be far more durable, I think they do fade eventually but you can get a few years out of them. I've just left the last discs in my cars because, well I still think it seems strange not having one in the windscreen!
overrun Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I think you would be seriously unlucky to be fined for displaying an out of date tax disc! When it was still a legal requirement to dsiplay them, I ran around with a '1983' Poplar Greg job, and it was never an issue. So I doubt anyone, anywhere, gives a fuck, now.
Angry Sheep Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I asked the DVLA about the fine thing... Doesn't mean there isn't some technicality but you're never going to be fined for displaying a period tax disc.
richardmorris Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 It's basically a receipt. The charge was always failing to display- irrespective of whether you had actually paid. I think it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the government forgot to repeal this law when they got rid of the little bit of paper,
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I used my graphic design skills to make this, I spent a long time getting the colours exactly correct etc. Richard, Vince70, Craig the Princess and 6 others 9
Six-cylinder Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I like this idea from the Triumph Sports Six Club and it does have perforations. Vince70 1
Mr A Lawrence Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I put my Leeds United shield in the jag windscreen as it looked bare without something there.
trigger Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I bought this one of a chap on Facebook, I think it was £6 posted for 6, I'll have to double check. Pretty good service to be honest but you have to cut it and fill it on yourself.
doug Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Whatever happened to Fred Transit? http://a2ecommercials.webs.com/taxdiscs.htm
strangeangel Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Which reminds me, need to head over to a certain other thread and mention Milla Jovovich
mrcitroen Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 Windscreens do look bare without them. They were parent & parcel of motoring for years. I wil possibly get one for the BX but I'm not that bothered about the Alfa. I done the perforations by going round it with a very small cross head jewellers screwdriver so it has the authentic ripped look Poplar Greg supplies 3 with only one filled out.
overrun Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I put my Leeds United shield in the jag windscreen as it looked bare without something there.image.jpeg DOES NOT COMPUTE LUFC supporters must display a 2x1' sticker of the club crest, in the centre of the rear screen. strangeangel 1
