NOW THATS WHAT I CALL NOISE vol 69

The sound of a very worn, high mile petrol engine idling calmly, compression so low, rings and bearings so slack that it sounds quiet, smooth and effortless. Bedford CA van engines were good for that.

Polite sounding twin-tone horns

Passenger jet airplanes that were so loud you just gave up talking until they had flown by (used to live on the flight path to Bristol Airport).

The thu-fOOM-BOOOM of Concorde supersonic over the estuary, approaching Wales

Pez engine run on after ignitions being turned off, dieseling away quietly to themselves.

Starter motor over-run.

Backfiring motors.

(All to be heard at my house at the moment courtesy of the Scirocco, the bastard)

The screech of seizing piston and brief locking of the back wheel when a small 2 stroke bike 'nips' up.

The uneven idle of an MGB that makes people think it's a powerful engine when it isn't.

The silence when you lift off the accelerator in a Wartburg or P4 with freewheel.

Backfiring cars is a great one, makes most people look around in alarm (OMG TOURISTS) but those of us that know and remember that sound just smile and remember rose tinted terrible memories of the days when everything was shit but still worked if you hit it hard enough.

Worn inertia reel seatbelt whizz followed by trying to encourage the last loop of it to return to the reel properly without jamming.

The plink-plink of older indicator relays as found in Triumphs and the like.

Haha. I still run a dialup server. I have a 386 that operates a BBS if you dial in to it (remember them?)

How about daisy wheel printers? There's one of mine.

Or how about adding machines?

Fun times

Someone at work has an inkjet printer in their desk and a colleague commented how she had'nt heard one for ages. I find daisy wheel printers wonderfully agressive sounding things. The whole desk shakes when they are knocking one out.

The noise of a floppy disk drive loading its content.

Fiesta pop 950 engine or any old Ford with a slightly blowing exhaust sounds good.

I was going to say the exhaust note of a mk1 Fiesta, but you've sort of beaten me to it.

Around ten years ago, every man and his dog around here drove Imprezas. I still miss the regular burble of a lively flat four.
