Collection-related insurance question NOW WITH ADDED EBAY HALFWITTERY

So... listing finishes at 4pm today and seller wants car gone by close of play tonight.

It runs and has MOT, but is SORNed. My collection accomplice has a trader's policy, but we can't add it to his policy cos they're closed today.  His policy does allow him to drive cars that aren't registered in his name with 3rd party cover, but doesn't the car have to be currently insured as well for this to work?

We don't have a trailer or owt, and it's 3 hours away, so too far to chance it!

Doesn't his trader policy have a website where he can add stuff to the MID?

While most driving other cars policies require the car to be insured it isn't all of them. Privilege's policy I had last year didn't need it to be insured and in pretty sure our old trade policy didn't.

I think check the policy document to see if it is covered.

I would invest £25 or so on day insurance. The policy now seems to be impound first and ask questions later.

Just messged him now and he says his broker has never mentioned that.

I didn't know you could do this! I know, where have I been hiding etc. Anyway, I did a quick search and just got a quote for £23.90 for 24 hours cover, so I reckon this sounds like the safest bet.

Looks like I'll be having a punt then! Cheers chaps :-D

If your mate has a proper Traders Policy it will cover it, regardless of any other policy or who it's registered to.

But if he's driving it on the 3rd party to drive other cars bit of a normal policy then i think it has to be insured properly somewhere.

As rufgeezer said, I thought all Traders insurers these days have an online 'Update MID' facility.

He's not the most technologically aware, so it might well have...

For the sake of 25 pund I think we'll play safe!

If he takes his trade insurance documents with him, and tries to find if they have a website update for the MID, he should be all right in the event of a pull.

The change in law to continuous insurance means that cars must be insured at all times if they are on the road.

So day insurance best bet

Read my post in ' breadvans legal thread '

It would be legal for you to put it on mid, but as the coppers don't know the laws that well you may still get the car seized if you get pulled

You could take the actual certificate with you but they may not believe it's real, as you could of made it on a laser printer.....

Don't risk it

What sort of dick auctions a car and expects it shifted within 6 hours of the end of the sale (on a bastard Sunday???) I hope you win it for 10p. I would say if someone else wins it there is a less than 10% chance if him getting what he wants.

Quite, I'm certainly hoping that his T&Cs put a few other bidders off.

Ref. some above comments, the police told me to take my trade insurance policy with me when collecting cars to be on the safe side. You do get 2 weeks to add them to the database, but a car that pings ANPR is going to bring you trouble so take doc's with you.

I'm also amazed the insurance haven't got a database on the internet you can add/remove cars from, it's a God send and if you do know sort of 36 hours or so in front, you can add it before you collect.

This gets better, the nob jockey who won the listing didn't read it and failed to notice that it had to be collected tonight. Consequently I have received a 2nd chance offer... undecided as yet.

Always wondered if the second chance offer is at your high bid price or the price you would have paid if the winner had not bid... anyone know??

It's come back at my high bid

I think the seller can choose who they second chance to and at what price, they basically pick one of the bids and it goes to that person at that price.

Tell him as time is marching on, and you'd made other plans, you will have it but at a more suitable price. He must be desperate to shift it.

I echo Boll's sentiments, the guy is clearly mental if he expects many people to be able to collect a car, insured, in a few hours. I'd be quite wary of other numbskullery from him too

What a flippin surprise!!! Now you can suggest a less impossible collection schedule.

Or not...

I was beaten by a last-second snipe and get a 2nd chance offer at my high bid. At the point at which I got sniped I was winning at nearly £200 less than this figure.

Seller says the winning bidder didn't read the listing and couldn't collect tonight, so he offered it to me. By this time I have no intention of trailing down there and getting home at Stupid O'Clock so I tell him this. Suddenly it's OK to pick it up any afternoon next week or all day Friday! Why not make the same offer to the high bidder unless they were a shill?

Either way he's a helmet, so ahm oot.

To be fair to him, he possibly came to his senses when the highest bidder said he couldn't collect tonight and he burnt his bridges with him.

If it's cheap enough then give it a go.

What was the car?

It was a 205CTi.

I dunno, it just smells odd to me... he could easily have made the same offer to the winner. It's not like he's bent over backwards to make himself available on one day, he's suddenly around all week. And this is the second time it's been listed, sold and not collected with ridiculous collection terms. Also a CTi wasn't my first choice anyway, I really want a CJ (cheaper tax, slow is the new fast etc.) so all things considered I shall pass.

Don't crash on a day insurance policy, the last one I took out had something like a £700 excess.

I was an OMG MALE UNDER 25 TEARAWAY!111 at the time though.
