On a slightly unrelated note, the 405 carried us faultlessly to this noble cantonment, which has been housing the Junkclan since Saturday.

I was under the impression that seaside towns were always crawling with shite. Or does that only apply to the south coast?

I wonder when the penny will drop with mobile food vendors that Citroen H vans are a bit of a tedious cliché. That Daihatsu is well fit, though.

 

I've always found that the seaside is only great for shite spotting if you like seeing MG Rover chod or Honda Jazzes.

Got to disagree. I used mine as an actual van, you know for transporting stuff with, lovely low load bed and wide access. Biggest load was a whole pallet of concrete blocks (1200kg) took that without breaking into a sweat. Stopping the bugger made me sweat a little though....

And yes, I sold it before prices went silly....

Would love an Estefette,had minibus in 60s which i modified by fitting another engine/semi autobox at rear,out of a dauphine i think?

Well, seeing that it's just a pointless British MoT, thus merely a 50 quid rubber stamp completely unrelated to the vehicle's actual condition, peace of mind cannot be assumed.

During the real vehicle inspection, which I explicitly ordered and paid for, it was discovered, that the car needs new brakes all round, calipers and all.

Not surprisingly, those are rather pricey for the examples equipped with this newfangled ABS tosh.

H-vans only became useless when they grew fashionable and scenetax. Before that, they were just brilliant, with a modern engine, box and brakes they'd cut it today away fom the outside lane of motorways.

Even got me one front caliper as well, for the princely sum of £4.50

Sadly the other one is 90 quid, so must try harder...

 

But so far it's less than a Scare for three calipers, not bad going even if I have to shell out full whack for the last one.

 

Heck, I spend more on model cars!

Calipers seem a bit of an issue with these, just had two more replaced on one of mine for its MOT last month.  Usually the rear ones.  The blue one is starting to cost me an arm and a leg but is the most marvelous example to drive I've ever had, and I've had seven of them.

It's only my fifth, so I have to buy two more...

 

Mind you, it didn't fail on anything, I'm merely replacing the brakes because they aren't perfect.

Rear calipers always have been a bit of an issue especially on estates, because they do absolutely nothing unless the car is laden.

Hence they have a tendency to seize when the car sees predominantly light use.

However, so far they usually are replaced with new ones, which were assembled as dry as a fart in Arizona.

I guess the first time a set gets rebuilt the proper way, i.e. put together with loads of brake fluid everywhere, they probably last forever.

Also, for them to work properly, all that gear they slide on must be in top notch.

Yeah, rear calipers are bollocks, and only exist because of Germany. Sure if you've a 165mph 'supercar' then fine, but for most of us they're a pita.

 

Consider recon-ing calipers yourself with new pistons and seals, it's usually many times cheaper than complete units unless cylinder damage is oof. Those amazon bargains are good, I picked up a pair which I've used on Volvo for under £15, which is ok but irritating since I've a pair I bought for an A6 for bagfuls of silver which I've never used.

 

 

 

 

 

PS double check the amazon ones are correct, they're a bit loose with their descriptions.

The first FTP since the car was bought has occurred. On the morning of the 24th, it needed to be jump started.

According to the Junkwoman, who used the car extensively on that day with a set of jump leads in the boot for safety*,

it performed flawlessly throughout.

It has since been parked on the drive and I was expecting it to again needing a jump start after a few days standing,

then head out and buy a new battery once the shops are open again.

 

However, this morning it started right up without any problems.
