stuboy Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 my missus dad has laid up in corner of his yard a 4 litre 3 speed auto ex mini bus that was converted in to moble home, he using it for storage(trying to get it emptied), he not started it in a while but assures its not seized up, the plan is to get it running and get rid as hes getting too long in the tooth to use it, and needs the space for his kit cars and caravan, are these desirable or wanted? picture below is to show what its like not actual one Junkman, danthecapriman, brickwall and 2 others 5
strangeangel Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 are these desirable or wanted? I suspect that asking this question within the confines of this forum and also in the outside world would elicit two very different answers My cousin had one of these some years back, a gown van type of thing (had been a mobile dole office) which had also been converted to a camper. It was reliable enough but dog slow. Advertising it here might be an idea... Cavcraft and Junkman 2
wuvvum Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 I shudder to think how slow one of those would be with a 3-speed auto in it. I think an '87 would still have the old Perkins 4.236 engine - even more gutless than the later Phaser, but pretty much unburstable. Get him to stick it on eBay as an "OMGBARNFIND RETRO SURF WAGON NOT SPLITSCREEN DUB RATLOOK" and it should make at least a million quid.* SOUL, chaseracer, J-Rod and 4 others 7
ruffgeezer Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Oh that is lovely, enough torque to pull a house down, but not enough power to outrun the falling brickwork. Some of the early series50 parts are getting to be unobtainium though. Twiggy, The Moog, Rusty_Rocket and 9 others 12
stuboy Posted September 21, 2015 Author Posted September 21, 2015 im trying to get him clear the yard so can empty it.

danthecapriman Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 I love these! Proper big old vans!We used to have a few manual panel vans at work (Southern Electric) until a few years ago. I loved driving them but they were very slow. Everyone would get out of your way on the roads too!One was an A reg Dodge 50 the other was a later Renault version. I don't think you'll struggle to sell one, especially if it's in a decent condition. The gypsy types and farmers used to hoover all our old ones up.Good luck selling it.
Skizzer Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 With a 3-speed auto? gR99 4 Old Age Travellers more like. Jim Bell 1
Split_Pin Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 TravellerHomes has lots of coverage of these. There are even some up to date pictures of Leyland FGs being used so I'll bet that this sort of vehicle will still appeal to that demograph.
stuboy Posted September 22, 2015 Author Posted September 22, 2015 this isnt a for sale thread but if anyones is interested in it and wants his number to convince him to part with it please let me know
cms206 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Get us a rego Stuboy... I bloody love 50-series and fancy a project if it's of interest to me.
J-Rod Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 a gown van type of thing (had been a mobile dole office) A mobile dole office?! Not in David Cameron's Britain... Did it play music like an ice-cream van?
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 A mobile dole office?! Not in David Cameron's Britain... I don't know... Claimant knocks on doorVan drives away J-Rod, Cavcraft and Lacquer Peel 3
cms206 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 I should add that if the registration series ends in WYS, SDS or NCS I'll be down personally if the price is right. TBH if it's an Alexander bodied example and the price is right I'll be interested.
cros Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Most autobox Dodges had a slant 6 petrol, presumably sourced from a US car. I went to buy one thinking it would be the excellent Perkins 4236, but ran away when confronted with this thirsty device. If this thing is petrol the cheapest fix is the plentiful late 90's 2.8 Iveco turbodaily engine with its manual box. The Perkins fetch big money these days.
Cavcraft Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 'Probably the biggest and most shambolic website devoted to one series of vehicle' http://www.dodge50.co.uk/ A better opening gambit is probably not to be found. Lacquer Peel and mat_the_cat 2
