Midlands Mustang - ZT260's. Cars I didn't buy plus one I did

I'm having a fleet re-arrangement, which will involve selling my Cortina once it's welded up. I did (and still) am looking at Datsun 350Z's but what I really want is an MG ZT260.

I don't want a 75 v8 as I don't want an autobox (I've got the p6 for that) and I'm hoping I can scrape one in around 4 grand.

Obviously now I'm looking there are none for sale for less than 7 grand.

Here's what I know:

They came from project LALALALA look over there at the car while we stuff 5 pounds down our underpants/

It has a pushrod  4.6 Mustang v8. Guess this is the same as in the crown vic etc?

Power goes to the back wheels.

Car tax costs a lot on the facelift ones.

It goes vroom vroom.

I know someone on here already has one but what else is to know about them.

Manual pedal box/footwell is cramped and ride is unreasonably harsh on the facelift MG.

Seats are miserably short on thigh support, but that's probably the case for all 75 variants.

2006 is the date tax got insane, facelifts are 2004? Or am I forgetting when they changed over?

Are these the ones that like to rot the subframes out? I do like the idea of them and always fancied a 75 Estate, but only in an I'd like to try one and get it out of my system way. Never seen a Rover 75 V8 Estate for sale when I've had any money though. The ZTT's do pop up occasionally, but so far the ones in my price bracket always have issues.

I imagine at my budget I'll be looking at a leggy one. I prefer the facelift (I'm in a minority I think) but either would do.
I like the Q car thing that it looks like any other ZT CDTi but it's got v8 POWA.

Don't forget the number of car bores who will tell you that the RWD conversion is PROOF that the 75 was based on the E39 5-series floorpan.

I've driven one and it was the most fun way to potentially die. Would I have one? Yes if you pay for the fuel! I had a lot of fun on the test drive....a lot of fun. The foot well was cramped as has been said. But in all honesty that was all I could fault it on. Glorious sound even if it didn't have the xpower exhausts. I'm sorry I have no real technical input about them, but what a car for Rover to bow out on. I would Definatly recommend one over a city rover any day.

I saw one on the Derby A6 going past Rolls Royce Nuclear yesterday and on to the A52 towards Nottingham. I was cycling across the Slip road that heads towards the A52 Derby city centre, and heard him change down a couple of gears before the bend. For a moment, I though he was going my way, and I was going to be run over by one of my favourite cars. Sadly (for those that despise my very being) my death will have to wait. But it would have been a fine way to die.

I have fancied one of these for ages and one day she will be mine oh yes

Me too, which is why I'm now on the look out. I hope one comes up soon or the temptation of the Datsun could be too much.

It's a difficult thing to justify, when you consider you can get a decent M5 for the same money. That being said I still really want one.

IIRC the CO2 nonsense started in 2001 and all 75 V8s and 260 ZTs will cost £290.00/year

Cort

I have one... bought it March this year 04 Facelift with 100k on the clock, probably one of the highest mileage zt260 in the uk, It cost a lot more than £4k and I would say was one of the cheaper ones...

Tax is about £25 a month, mine's a facelift, so not too much

It likes fuel... But its not that quick.... But the noise...  :-D

The reason why the hold the value is the rarity.

Mine is the SE which is full leather with Nav, parking sensors etc, I would say the seats are very comfy (for me, quite a big bloke)

Try to get one with XPower exhausts, they really do make the car!

Things to look out for:

Rear Discs - Make sure they are not worn as replacements are very hard to find, they were only fitted to the v8 & nowhere has spares for them, ignore ebay & car spares places, their data is wrong.

Front Struts - Ditto very very hard to find

Tyres - Make sure they are wearing evenly

Gearbox - Is very stiff to start with but once warms up should get easier, same with clutch

Windscreen washer box - Is unique to v8 & 1.8t Auto, again hard to find & crack for fun which means no squirt

They also have all the 75 issues, damp, leaks & dodgy electrics.

If your ever in the Blackpool/Preston area you'd be welcome to come & have a look/chat, you never know everything has a price!

Cheers

You're talking 6-7 for a half decent E39 M5 but these ZT's do tend to come up for 4 and a bit grand now and again. The bork factor on an m5 is also a worry.

Posted

YES cort this is a GR297000000 idea.

I frickin love these but they're too dear for me at the minute. Please can I have a wee shot if you get one?

They do come up. Remember the lightly damaged one on co part recently!? 2 and a bit grand I think it sold for.

I'm pretty sure the tax is only horrible if you land a very very late (ie 06 plated ) one, chances of which are slim. Facelift came in on 04.

There was a facelift one in Glasgow maybe 3 months ago that sold for 3 grand. I wasn't really in the position to buy it then but I was hovering over the bid button anyway up until I checked the tax and it was £400 a year, which put me off.

I looked at loads of datsuns last year as they are pretty cheap for what you get, but never saw one I really really wanted, which is odd as I get excited about travelling in a 406 dizzler taxi i if one picks me up on a night out.

Saying that not much really goes wrong with them, a cheap m5 is a very very bad idea. I am really liking these mg's and 156 gta's at the mo, go for it. They seem like a modern hot rod/lash up which I love.

The pedal box is a bit cramped, but I don't agree about the ride - the one I drove had a firm but brilliantly sorted ride. It's still in my top 10 most enjoyable cars to drive, but they need another 100-150 bhp really.

I've been led to believe that a supercharger does the job very nicely indeed.

Theres an 05 facelift Rover one festering on a driveway near me, looks flippni lovely but no tax or MOT and soft-looking tyres on it.

Posted

I wonder what the story is there? Seems like quite a reasonably valuable car to have festering.

I could never get on with the grill on the 75 v8

156 gta

That's a point.

Have you tried one of these?

Posted

I had a 166 v6 and I've played Grand Theft Auto if that counts?

I was bored on my lunch break so was flicking through the channels and found a programme about Street racers.

I now want another veight again.

You could get a really tidy V8 soarer for that money, not as practical but it's a better engine and chassis.

Not as good looking though.
