Just wandering what a nice old original mini is worth as I know of one coming up soon. J reg all original never welded or messed with. Red 850 black inside.

No demand for the 850 models. I'd take it off your hands for £250...

Nothing, no-one wants them at all. Where did you see it for sale?

:D

1971 should be an early mk3- that means a 'pudding stirrer' gear stick on an 850, drip rails on the roof gutters and a solid-mounted front subframe.

Anything less and it's a re-shell and worth a fraction of what it could be!

It'll be Flame red and it could have either rocker or toggle switches, a steering lock or a centre key start - BLMC phased them on over late 1970/71 depending on what was in the parts bin at Longbridge that day. It will have the pudding stirrer gear lever but BLMC made an adaptor plate so they could use one diff housing. These early seventies Minis were probably the best to drive and a good original one is really crisp on the road.

If its original, no rust etc then a fair amount. The place to look/ask is theminiforum.com just have a browse of their for sale bits and you should be able to get a fair idea

Here's a restored one being punted at £6k. So I don't know, maybe £4k?

What a shame. Looks like its been restored to original spec but then you go inside and......stupid rally seats. Doing the Paris Dakar are we? Why cant people resist the urge to molest these old Minis.

When I got mine (1970 Mk3 1000) I had a nine hour drive to bring it home and the original seats were perfectly fine - although for some, no doubt, unconnected reason I was reduced to walking on all fours for the following week.  What a drive that was...38hp under the right foot and the open road stretching out ahead of you is not for the faint hearted!

Well I sold a '69 for £500 in about 2004.

Can't be worth any more than that cos that would make me look like an idiot.

I could of had this for less than a bag last year...........no money or space makes jack an upset boy.

Agreed. It's not ever that well done tbh - the wings to front panel seams aren't great, the BL badges are in the wrong place and it has front overriders when no Mark 3 Mini (Cooper S aside) had them. I had one identical in 1987, BVF688J. Gave £300 for it, rusty and full of wob but it drove really well.

Put a 'Mini owners do it....' sticker in the back window, leave the wheels standard 145/10s and nail six foot wide wheel arches into the body filler and it'll be worth £13,500 to some complete spanner.

If it's a good one, get it without question. Sounds like a lovely car, in a nice colour too.

I remember seeing a very clean green Mk3 850 in Holmfirth being driven by a young lad, girfriend in tow. Totally standard save for a centre exit exhaust of some sort that made it excessively loud.

FWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARP.

...just before it was run off the road by three blokes coming down a hill in a bathtub.

Ok going to view mini later in the week. Any more tips on how to avoid a reshell etc greatly appreciated. Any specific areas to inspect? What's a 'pudding stirrer' gearstick? Pics would be good.

I have a soft spot for the Clubman, probably brought on by many, many hours driving one of these

Same here, but with tasteful mods:

Minis are very easy to check for rust. Start at the front bumper and check every bit of metal until you reach the rear bumper.

Front valance and wings around the lights

Screens front and back where rust starts under the rubber seal

A panels

bottom of the doors where the drainage holes block

sills, floor and jacking points

rear valance

rear subframe and boot floor in the battery and spare wheel well

lift up carpets and back seat to check if there is anything there

Basically everything except the roof and the boot lid

A wise man told me that with Minis, "oil always gets out, water always gets in"

But, go ahead and buy it. It will be a hoot!

Also, remember that Mini's rust from the inside out.

There is no such thing as 'minor surface rust' when someone is trying to sell you one

The last MOT I put my 77 clubman estate in for, the woman at the garage rung me up about 5 mins in and said they could stop the test and not charge me if I wanted. As said already they rust from the inside out. When you can see rust it's way too late. In my experience only bits of Minis that tend not to rust are the front subframe, due to oil leaks, and the glass.

Definitely get it though, they're a laugh.

Viewed mini briefly this morning.

Its a 1000cc not an 850

Has the welded in ashtrays drip rails etc so seems genuine

paint a bit rough, a few dings...two in the roof

seems solid enough a bit scabby here and there round the seams.

paperwork not available till monday as the girls dad has it but apparently has original bill of sale and a 'big file'!

Price is around 2k

Thoughts please as I would be buying for a few months of fun then move on hopefully at a profit

Posted

Sounds about right for the price. Buy it, razz round in for a bit and, at the very least, its unlikely you will lose anything if you sell it in a couple of years.

I have one the same vintage and its the only car I've ever caught myself talking to (apart from a Fiesta Popular, but that was more about shouting "Start you evil bastard"). Like I said, they're a hoot. So....dont delay, go and buy it and then get some pictures posted

You won't lose at £2k. Sounds like the 'shell is correct. I'm quite happy to tell you if it's correct spec-wise if you pm me the chassis number.
