Talk me out of this.

Nice looking car and a well written advert. It reeks of WIN! go buy it, NOW!

Yeah, seemed to fit the initial criteria ('literate', check, 'seems straight enough for a visit', check)

Have dropped the bloke a message, so let's see.

Awful colour but otherwise spot on, yes, do it.  Unmolested ones are getting rarer by the day and there's probably a good chance it's going to keep its value pretty well.

Ha, well truth be told, it's for the other half and despite not caring about cars, she is fussy on colour. I'm just doing that thing, whereby if I have to drive it, I can have some fun... I'm fairly sure that's a pretty standard pattern.

Also, I'm with you, Phil; I reckon they will at least start holding their value, especially looked after ones.

It's GAWWWWLLLDDDDD, innit?!

No, the original ones are niiiice. I've done big rimz on a bini and that was one* of the reasons it had to be gotten rid of to two silly fools who paid what I asked for it (which was fairly optimistic, as I expected them to haggle me down...).

Also, none of you have tried talking me out of this yet. Come on... put some effort in!

That must be the last unmolested one of those in Christendom. Buy it and don't molest it.

I like the colour. Maybe I'm just getting to that age.

I'm on the lookout for a Saxo vts/vtr to tuck away for a rainy day . These were so popular with the yoof of the day and so many ruined that I reckon they will be worth a good amount in a few years .

Just nigh on impossible to find an original nice one

Yeah if it does end up in my possession, it'll remain original. It will be safe...!

you've come to the wrong place to try and get the group to talk you out of something that is silly/foolish/insane.

that isn't how autoshite works....

expect plenty of peer pressure to go and buy the jewish racing beige french folly above.

go on, DO IT!! and pretend that you are 18 years old again.....

DO IT!!

Well, I tried to be sensible.

Jewish racing beige, indeed... I will await messages with baited breath...

a friend had one new, cannot remember if it was a VTR or a VTS.

it was a mark 1 one and it went well enough.

i thought it was abit flimsy inside, but then all froggie cars were/are.

worse this was that he traded a really clean mark 2 escort ghia against it, with a webber carb on!! i hate to thing what the escort would be worth now.

The dialogue has begun. Going to see it this weekend. Let's see if it's as good as it seems to be

My initial thoughts are the seats look really grubby and it has odd rear tyres.

Also this..

Full service history nearly all main dealer

Which probably means they changed the oil.......... Once upon a time!

Sorry I can't be positive.

I hope im wrong and it turns out to be a gem.

Nono, pessimism is good. I noticed those things too but I reckon it's worth a gander.

well as SWMBO is fond of saying, it costs nothing to look.

assuming that the car isn't at the other end of the country.

annoyingly there has been a champagne beige allegro for sale close to home that i wanted to have a look at this weekend that has since sold....

bumhats....

please, please, stop, dont do this, you know it will end in tears

there i tried its over to you now

It's only in Daventry, so only about half hour from here. Chap just got back to me saying post 4, so popping over today. Let's see where this leads..

Is it being sold by a lower end dealer? The photo's are taken in an odd location for your average Joe and Josephine public.

'if' it is being sold by a wide dealer try this....

Have a look at the paperwork and clock the name and address on the logbook, no harm in looking them up later and getting the SP on the car. I have done this a couple of times and the previous owner was always happy to chat for 5 mins about the car i.e. why they flogged it, or whether it was abit of a dog that he traded in etc etc. Also you can think about it over night and make the seller/dealer sweat a little.

From past experience the dealer will tell you its the best example from here to the ends of the earth, but speaking to the actual owner can be priceless sometimes.

Ok, owner met and car seen. It's actually not that bad, bodywork is straight, couple of scuffs, nothing more. Interior needs a good clean and tidy. History is quite complete, though there are a few holes (cambelt thankfully not one of them). It's been laid up for a bit and the owner was a nice chap - seemed to know his stuff. Only problem was that the engine was filthy (probably as the car had been standing for a bit) and the head was covered in oil. Drove ok though, no knocks or bangs.

So apart from the very oily head, everything else seems to be easily replaceable or tidied up. Thoughts?

If you are happy, the car looks straight, the price is good then go for it.

I am always happier to see a dirty engine than one that has been steam cleaned - but that might just be me.

Good luck with it :)

It does seem worth saving - its fate would be Barrytown otherwise. I'll sleep on it...

If you like it why not make an offer tomorrow of £600 cash, take it or leave it.

You never know...He might take £650, which could be a bargain for an un-monged one of these.

Did you check where the boot floor meets the inner arches?  Does it still meet the inner arches?
