J-Rod Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Am seriously considering getting one of these before they become a plaything of the recently monied (and white backgrounded). Anyone know anything about them? How different are they from a regular 106, bitsprice-wise?
Parky Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 1300cc carb engine, close ratio box, gti suspension but most importantly, white steelies! Definite classic of the future
2MB Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 I adore the series 1s, especially in black. I don't think many of the parts are all that exotic but could be wrong. I was recently moving along quite briskly on a road I know well and one of these went past me like I was stood still, making a greatNoise and smell. Admittedly I was in a pickup truck but these things are rapid in the real world. Not a helpful answer really. Just get one
J-T Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 I think they already command a bit of a premium. The S1s had a tricked up 1300 carb'd lump, think they may have had lumpy cams specific to the rallye. The S2 was a stripped out GTI but I'm pretty sure came with the 1.6 8v motor as opposed to the 16v in the GTI, which I always thought was a bit daft. S1s are the ones really, red, white or black with truly excellent stripes. I can't actually remember the last time I saw either tbh. Good choice!!
garethj Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 I had one of the last S1 1300cc Rallyes, in black, when it was about 2 years old. An absolute hoot when you were thrashing it but very slow when you weren't on the revs. Fuel injection on mine but a lumpy tickover thanks to that cam. Lots of fun when trying hard and one of those cars that you're often trying hard with so not too relaxing on a long run.
nacho man Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 I had one with Citroen steelies on, with some new uniroyal tyres on the way if went round bends was unreal. The engine was a rev machine and with the close ratio box was a hoot. Cavcraft, 500tops, Vince70 and 5 others 8
Cavcraft Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Lovely things and already commanding a fairly decent premium.
Aston Martin Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Our Rallyes are just badge jobs, the proper Rallyes are France only?
Uncle Jimmy Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 I like these more than the 205GTI myself but then I'm a pervert.I believe they rot with the best of em, spare wheel well boot area bad.
nacho man Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Our Rallyes are just badge jobs, the proper Rallyes are France only? Not on 106/306 but on 205 I believe yes. Aston Martin 1
ruffgeezer Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 They aren't carb'd they are 1300cc injection on the S1 and 1600cc on the S2. Look out for corrosion, and originality is going to be key on these in a few years time. Trim level wise they have the same seats as the sporty models but with a different trim pattern, but they are utter poverty spec inside, save for a rev counter. Fun little cars though. Uncle Jimmy 1
DVee8 Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Bloke at the top of our street has twin sons one has a white one the other a red and between the they share a 306. I'll try to get some photos next time they are round.
srad34 Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 ...and so much better than the Saxo VTR/VTS equivilents
cobblers Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 They are cracking little cars. You'll be lucky to find an S1 with the original 1300c engine, they are all worked very hard (there's nothing below 5k RPM so you have to thrash them to get anywhere) and while amusing, they aren't all that fast. Most people, me included end up putting a 16v in out of a GTI or something. The gearboxes are also unique and shorter ratio, these are getting expensive if you need one. Back axles are the usual weak spot, as is chassis leg and boot floor rust. Heres a video I took years ago of someone who isn't me driving a 106 Rallye with a 16v engine like a bit of a wanker in the wet: Faker 1
sierraman Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 As far as getting a cheap one, you've missed the boat there, most people know now what with Ebay that one is worth more than £300.
