Oldsmobile has a new home!

Nice one. I did wonder about the coolant level but it always seemed happily steady temp-wise.  I would be very interested in hearing about that ATF leak, from a brief look underneath I guessed that it might be the transmission sump gasket. That and a filter are pennies to buy from the US of A. Where did you get the spring thing from? How many coins? You'll need a couple of plastic pad looking things too perhaps.

^^

It was the Canadian Company that you contacted initially.

£230 delivered for the replacement.

Looks like replacement might be a fun* job on the drive. Probably going to save up for a few weeks and get the friendly local garage to do it!

Has any of the previous owners on here ever seen inside the boot? Am properly curious now. No funny smells or any flies hanging around as yet. But it is winter after all. Am considering getting a local auto locksmith to call round and open the thing, but if there is a dead gangsta inside with a duct taped mouth I would rather not know!

Still not registered to me...

(Laughs in fake Brooklyn accent)

"Hey, fucka me fucka you buddy, you ain't gonna pin that on me slime ball"

Ahem.

So, that aside, before I pay a locksmith £35, WTF is actually in the boot? If it just a set of worn brake pads in soggy cardboard I won't bother....

cant you get in from the passenger compartment, by taking out the rear seat? or is it a solid bulkhead?

Not tried TBH. The suggestion had been made to the previous owners but they either didn't succeed or didn't try either!

Will give it a go methinks. Although the boot lock does need sorting eventually.

Just wondered mate. I was clearing out the galaxy boot the other day and noticed that the four screws that under the "boot" side of the mechanism could be I don from inside if needed. Not sure if that would help, mind you!!

Please post pictures of the boot if you open it.

I picked the car up from wuvvums and clocked up nearly 100 miles in it with a stop off on the Norfolk broads and southwold and it drove really well considering it has a saggy arse

I did look briefly at unbolting the seat base and peeling the rear seat upright forward. There appears to be some kind of cloth covering behind the seat and plenty of metal bracing. That is as far as I got.

Yeah, photos as you open the boot.

I never experienced that 'dead body smell' so you should be ok.

ATF leak? ( I once had an '86 Oldmansmobile Gutless)...They all do that sir. It's standard on all C-bodies...

A few words of caution about the job though: If you do "Jack up the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands," make sure you place one about 8" forward of the one opposite. If not, you could* actually bend the unibody where the subframe bolts in, resulting in wheel interference with the inside front fender.

Also, the filter itself comes with a 2" round gasket, which is quite difficult to remove from the transaxle without gouging the soft aluminum. If it is not replaced correctly, transaxle damage could result. Thus, the professional* mechanics 'round these parts tend to "just leave the old gasket in."

The rest of it is a simple job. I asked how far I should tighten the bolts, and was told: "Tighten 'em 'til they break, and back 'em off a half-turn!"

If I had to pay that much for the parts, I would have had to do the job myself. $100 TOPS. But good on ya, anyroad.

If the dashboard is bouncing and rattling--it shouldn't. The mounts tend to break at each end. I didn't keep mine long enough to try to fix it either, but it was a nice car. Sometimes I even miss it.

* Not...that i've ever...done that, mind you...

Hoy! It can't be Gutless! It has a SPORT badge on the hood/bonnet!

Oldmansmobile I can live with....

😊

I started to investigate the ATF leak, but it started raining again and hasn't stopped since. The plastic tub under the leak has collected 'not much' in three days so maybe it has fixed itself magically. Or not.

Or Not is the most likely answer.Maybe it ran out as you turned your back and put the lid on the bottle.

Please fix it all and then I can have it back :)

Swap you a Rover and a Mondy for it ;)

Quite possible! Rainbow puddle on drive may prove this correct.

Again, quite possible. But you can't actually 'have' it back. You could 'buy' it back...Lol.

NO.... 😊

Hell, it was always worth a try. I shall start saving.

The Rover and Mondy are rather nice you know ;)

Just saying like.

Please :) (starts twitching and getting fidgety) :)

To end any speculation - when I picked the car up the seller opened the boot, and all that was in there was some ATF and possibly some rags.  Definitely no dead mafiosi, soz.

Well there goes the suspense right out of the window, sheesh.

Still tipping down with rain and proper windy so zero progress to report... Good news re the boot contents I suppose. Obviously didn't want to find a body in there but a sack of cash would have been useful..

Some ATF and rags is better than nothing though!

Some ATF and rags? Looks like the bottle leaked.

Speaking of ATF.

The two litres I bought to top up the leaky transmission in order to move the car onto the drive was Comma AQF. Seems I should have used AQM according to the Comma website.

Bugger. The wrong fluid is now leaking out.

Good job it has an ATF self disposal unit in that transmission eh.

Oddly it seems to want to keep the new ATF. Only one or two drops haz since leaked. Of course it may well dump it all in one go soon!

Have done nothing at all mechanical to the car as yet. Rain and gales etc. Although spent an hour today between rain showers cleaning and giving the car a good looking at.

Apart from the usual American car in UK syndrome (filthy interior and general air of neglect) a good daily car is under there. No offence to Ken or previous owners on here!

The Mercury was similar really.. Again no offence Eddy! You were both just the recent custodians obviously.

Once the rear spring arrives it will be fitted and the car sent for the MOT.

The ATF leak will then be addressed. Am liking it more and more TBH. Daily duties will be shared between this and the Mercury if all goes to plan.

Good progress on the Olds, should be a great daily once it's sorted. How's your Mercury? Did the fault get sorted in the end?

It'd be interesting to have both in use together and a good old GM v Ford comparison of the two similar cars.

Talking of ATF leaks, I had a transmission leak on mine before it went for it's engine rebuild. It pissed out ATF onto my Tarmac drive, which then literally dissolved into a black oily soggy bitumen mess! I was not popular after that. It's still leaving pretty rainbows on the drive every time it rains now, many months later.

I wish you all the very best with this steed. I may be a little more odd tonight as I appear to have the poisoning of food and may be approaching a mild delirium. I really don't feel very well at all.

This of course has nothing to do with ATF I think. Look at those big rabbit fuck bastards. Fuck off ya cunts with your fancy footwear. Yarrgghhh.

^^ Excellent drawing! LOL. Unsure of the significance of the bed, but jolly good!

😊

ATF still leaking unsurprisingly... The leak slowed down to a few drips and then resumed. No surprise there.

Anyway. That aside, no actual progress due to weather/work, but have started to amass the parts needed to return the Oldmansmobile to the road while I await the replacement rear spring from Canada.

Me being not content (for long) with scruffy/missing paint and trim, Ebay has been visited. Replacement badges have been purchased for $ notmuch to replace the existing broken ones. (The bonnet badge just says OLD....... SMOBILE being broken off). A replacement front chrome grille has been bid on also.

Other missing trim parts for the interior etc are also being sourced. As is bonnet release cable and other broken stuff.

.... shirley, OLD leaves an 'auto$hite shaped' space to insert 'M''A''N', made of other cars badge letters - then finished off with a badge from a husqvarna 'SNOWMOBILE'. ;)
