The Reverend Bluejeans Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Don't think there is a valve as such..........just a restrictor..........either remove or enlarge the hole missus It's a screw in thing with a hole in the middle and a split pin. The split pin is removed and the screw in thing screwed back in. Result - lots more oil getting to the head. It was a standard mod at dealerships repairing the bastard things. This is the little bugger in question: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-UKC7207 alf892 and CGSB 2
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 We used to look after a couple of 6 pot SD1's. One was an ex Police 2600 complete with base trim, Minilites etc and it went really, really well and I think it had the 2300 diff. It would be some 3500 that got past it. The other was a mint red W reg 2300 owned by a shaking Scotsman called Jock Nairn. Proper piss head legend and a really nice old boy. He bought it in 1983 and it already had a Goldseal engine. It was a manual (4 speed?) and it was a bit sluggish but such a nice smooth driving thing. It was akin to driving a 520i in that respect.
alf892 Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 blimey............don't remember that little bugger!! Was a dealer mech too......did loads could be thinking of S series. As far as I can remember my memory is ace........its just the things I forget that I cant recall. or summink
Bren Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Believe it or not that little valve's job was to restrict the flow of oil to the head as too much would have ended up going past the valve guides and being burnt in the engine. Mucho smoke. Charter hydraulics used to make various accessories for the six - one was a buzzer that sounded when the flow of oil was restricted (fuck all use when you are doing 80 in the fast lane) another had an auxiliary oil supply that fed the camshaft in the event of no supply. I am fairly sure that some Heath Robinson contraption could be fashioned a la' autoshite out of tube, an old spry crisp and dry bottle, cable ties and various T pieces. Beware - i am led to believe that various parts for the six (oil pump gears spring to mind) are no longer available.
sierraman Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Anyone had the SD1 2400 SD diesel? Or a pic of one?

Brian Damage Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 What a fabtastic motor! I don't recall them looking this good even when they were new. Mate's dad had a red 2600. I used to get a lift home in it. Lovely cars. Top purchasing!

Mucho smoke. It was bollocks though. What other engine had such a daft idea? Valve stem oil seals prevented oil going down the guides anyway. There's a a bloke on oner of the SD1 forums who did just this and it had no problems.

sierraman Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Oof be still my beating heart! I wonder what he gets to the gallon on the 2400 SD?
phil_lihp Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 There's this beast as well, sadly it looks like a serious welding project. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-SD1-SD-Turbo-Diesel-2400-Spares-or-Repair-/251916963461?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3aa76bce85
Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 SD1s can take OVAZ Autoshite mwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
sierraman Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 That SD1 on eBay looks rotten as a pear. The rust at the top of the screen looks terminal. Hopefully some madman has bought it and will restore it!
Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Some here will recall that this whole sorry descent into ruin and insanity started with me pondering the replacement of my 2001 Alfa 156 Sportwagon with a mid noughties Jag X Type V6 Estate. That plan didn't last very long, and after various thinkings about Saabs and what not, I did what I should have done all along, and replaced a reasonably reliable modernish car with something made by BL 32 years ago and famous for torching its engine on a pretty much daily basis. Today, after handing over the Alfa to Six-cylinder of this Parish, as I drove out of the station car park (dodgy geezers doing a meet and car deal in a station car park innit), I found myself following a pale blue X Type Jag V6 Estate. Hand of Fate, or something. Skizzer, Ghosty, Vince70 and 2 others 5
Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 By the way, last night, I shit you not, I had a vivid dream in which I inherited from someone (I know not whom) a Rover 75 Estate with a tow bar. I mentioned this to Ess Dee One, and he pointed out that this was not so much a dream as a nightmare. I add that the 75 had been given a candy coloured rat look paint job. Most disturbing. EssDeeWon Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Tonight, try and dream about V6 Connoisseurs. More importantly, when are you going to get bored and raffle the SD1?

EssDeeWon Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 ^^The current owner of my old SD1 (FHJ794T) went to view that platinum silver car on C&C By all accounts its rough and has been rattle canned in places.
Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Old chod, of course, has real actual car keys. Note also one very cool thing in photo that only old gits will recognise. Magnificent Rustbucket and Junkman 2

Magnificent Rustbucket Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I wonder how many AA boxes there are left - and if they still work? There is one near me, sited at the junction of the A556 and A50 in Mere, near Knutsford, Cheshire. It is listed, which is why it is still there. Somewhat bizarrely, Jaguar XJ40s came with an RAC key when new. It was part of a pack, including a metal RAC badge resplendent with Jaguar leaper. That Jaguar were still doing this in the late 1980s and early 1990s is very odd indeed. Maybe they had a huge stockpile of them. I sometimes think I will buy one on Ebay (they come up now and then) since my car had the badge when my dad had it. I took it off years back when he was still alive. They're expensive though - but if new, still include the key sometimes.
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Shiteists! Get in on the Act - http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C637791Would it have had mustard coloured carpets from new? I love the Series one - but they lost something when they binned the beautiful original door mirrors. The originals are probably my favourite door mirror of any car.
Skizzer Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Would it have had mustard coloured carpets from new? The seats and the carpets don't really seem to go, do they? Mine (which is also platinum silver, but a year older so pre-facelift) has the same mustard carpets, but browner seats and plastics. Suspect the carpets in the one for sale may be a replacement. Mine looks like this: Untitled by Skizzer, on Flickr NorfolkNWeigh, cort16, garethj and 2 others 5
TagoraSX Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I had to replace the carpet in mine as it was waterlogged. I now have beige seats and a brown carpet Skizzer and EssDeeWon 2
406V6 Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Father 406V6 had a Series 1 manual 2600 SD1 followed by a Series 2 back in the day and having driven them a few times if I was buying one today it would have to be a series 1 V8 automatic. I prefer the purity of the Series 1 design even though the build quality was total and utter sh*te. How a series 1 could survive to 2015 without dissolving into a pile of rust is beyond my understanding. His car had almost done that in a little over 3 years. I still remember him hacking at the huge rusting scabs (this is a 3 year old car remember) on the panels and touching them up with Kurust and paint.
