SD1 Foolery - ROVER 2600 SE - now with FIXED head gasket

The SD1 now has a stone stuck in by the front offside brake disc.   I will have to jack it up and free the stone.

If you're worried about the brake bias it might be easier to insert a stone into the nearside brake disc...

Glad to hear your pop's is on the mend.

Well, obviously I don't like the news regarding your father.

Nothing too serious, I hope?

Pretty serious.

My father, an Industrial Engineer,  had a part in the development of the SD1.  He always preferred to call it "Solihull Drawing Office 1", although he knew what SD1 officially stood for.  He worked in most of the BL Divisions at various times.  We lived a short walk from the factory in Lode Lane, and my father always referred to Rover as "The Rover".

Joe Clarke, born Dublin, Eire 25-4-1938 , died Oxford, UK 29-9-2015.

In sympathy, my SD1 has shed its oil.  That can be fixed.  Some things can't be.

Sorry to hear G, hateful thing when a much loved and respected parent passes. I hope he went well if that means anything.

All the best.

I am very sorry to read this.

Thanks for all kind words.  I freaked out, turned into a shouty rage monster, but am OK ish now.

I wonder what has become of the Rover.  The low oil light came on, it threw all its oil out onto the floor, and after refilling with oil shows no oil pressure and so cannot be run (indeed the fuel supply cuts off when there is no oil pressure, a good idea).   I hope just a pump or summat.  No readily evident sign of grenading in cam box.  The oil was fresh and recent.  No funny noises, car had been fine until just before this happened.

I notice a severed green plastic pipe hanging below the engine  (EDIT:  that is just to vent petrol from carbs), but have not had a proper look underneath.   I again miss my mobile mech Roy, still too ill to come and help.  I will have to get the car towed to someone else.

Does it have a rosdiguard fitted? I believe it was an auxillary supply of oil to the cam should the original fail.

Other than that I cannot see where the engine oil has come from, other than a holed sump/ block or a burst oil filter.

I do not think it has a guard fitted, but allegedly late cars built at Cowley did not have the stupid widget that caused the cam problems anyway.    The blokes in the factory left it out on purpose.

You should see pipework going to the top of the engine if it has one - the top of the range item supplied oil to the cam.

The lower spec ones simply had a buzzer that sounded when the oil supply was interrupted.

Cannot see any sump damage at present, and refilled oil not leaking out.  The green pipes are just the petrol vents for the carbs.   There was no vibration, noise or indication of engine failure before the oil jumped out.

Sorry to hear of your loss.  I've recently been reading the road test articles for the SD1 and the Rover Story book, it must have been great times being that involved in the project.

Sorry to hear about your dad, if it's any conciliation (yeah, right) you'll probably never get over it but you will eventually get used to it.

As for the Rover, I'd give it a wide berth for a little while, you don't need the hassle right now.  You're not in the best state of mind to deal with the stuff that old cars can throw up.

I concur.

You never really get over of your mum or dad's death but as said you do eventually learn to live with it - but if you are anything like me when my dad died, it takes a long time.

Your grief will be very raw now - overwhelmingly so at times. Be kind to yourself; you need support from those who love you - as will your mum too. Leave the Rover for now and come back to it . The car can wait.

At long last, problem diagnosed - duff oil pressure switch, with leak from there.  Not yet able to locate a replacement part via Rimmer's or elsewhere.

Posted

It's worth comparing how it looks to other Austin/Rover parts of the time. Rimmmer's didn't list the water temperature sensor for my 2600S in their SD1 section but I found it elsewhere listed for a Montego or something.

Posted

It would appear that certain panels, six cylinder specific parts and even brake drums, are getting nigh on impossible to source.

What will happen when much of rimmers stock is exhausted? There are not many SD1's left to justify production of spares.

Sadly, running an SD1 may become very difficult. I think the one I own currently may well be my last.

Apparently the switch is used in slant 4 vauxhalls and many other vehicles.

Advertised on ebay but I do not know how to attach the link.

You have to give up and put a v8 in it so you can have less performance and worse fuel economy.
