Fucking proms.

My school days ended with 'study leave', which was used as an opportunity to 'expand my mind'. Can't think of anything worse than a school disco, and a school disco with unrealistically high dress and vehicular requirements at that.

Ah yes, the DRESS, I'd forgotten about that 6 months of grief. The last one got a perfect copy of a multi thousand pound designer dress , as worn by Beyoncé. Daughter just sent a picture off by email paid £60 by Paypall. Dress arrived 3 weeks later from China, no doubt hand made by 6 year olds . Saved many visits to shops all over the country and quite a few quid.

I went to quite a smart school. Among the Hummer limos and Porsches we stood out a bit in this:

Borrowed from my dad's mate. 6 up (Bench seats FTW), 235 stovebolt straight 6 with straight pipes. Manual 3-speed column change that'll pull away in third.

Great fun.

My brother used my dad's GMC pickup after it had the Camaro v8 fitted. Bed was full of haybales and he had a load of girls in there with him. Think he enjoyed himself.

Any Americanisation to this level gets my goat.

The credit-rich parenting generation have made this get out of hand.  When I left school we signed our shirts and got a bottle of Thunderbird out to share at the park, while our parents were at home eating coal.

That said, there is only one car

I enjoyed it, despite myself and my misgivings about the tackiness of it. Being a total cheapskate, I was dressed for about £50 (TK Maxx ftw) and therefore wasn't precious about it. When we ended up drunk and wasted in the woods. It was only legitimising what we'd have done anyway.

That and the chance to get off with someone you've fancied for ages, on the basis that you probably won't meet them again.

We got a prom at the end of year 13 (6th form) and I was driven there, along with 3 other mates including the driver in his mum's toyota yaris. He didn't drink then drove us all home again afterwards.

I have no recollection of the night whatsoever.

I had better start saving up now for my 5 year old daughter's prom because by then I suspect I'll be needing to sell a kidney, lung and a time share on my heart to afford whatever is demanded!

(goes away to think about turning this into a way to get SWMBO to agree to let me buy a hot rod)
