A really Grand Day Out (Old Chod Pic Heavy)

Recommended Posts

SWMBO, myself and the Metro have been on a mighty run out on Sunday. Sadly we weren't going to collect anything but we were going to the Motor Heritage Centre for the Austin Metro 35th and Rover Metro 25th Anniversary show. It started out damn early on Sunday morning. Just to prove that there are infact TWO 5.30's in a day...

I wonder where my beloved Metro is now? I'm pretty sure an enthusiast bought it (wife sold it when we split up - sob!) as it was truly 'mint' and all original. I was keeping that forever.....

we even got MUGZZ

post-18270-0-31223600-1431972823_thumb.jpg

we were that engrossed in old cars AND slotcar racing, i didn't realise it was such a big thing as there were some huge circuits set up and traders selling cars there on sunday as a slot car "meet" going on at the same time!

we were there till closing time, and kerry was able to blag a ride around the museum grounds in a REAL MG 6R4!

we made it back home late last night, Marvin ran well all day, we nearly aborted going down after getting fuel we heard a funny noise from the back of the car, like the brakes had seized on. a couple of miles on, it had stopped, and didn't come back! well not yet anyway....

Great thread MM!!!! What a lot of honeys, the blue rangey is particularly tasty I find.

The old Rover 100 looks now, like it became quite a classy little machine in the end. I know it was totally outclassed in terms of its crashability and all that but it looks a flippin long way from a 1980 Metro City with its posh seats, tinted glass, factory sunroof, 16v all-alloy injected K-series and 5-spd box, the 1980 version seems like a right relic in comparison. IN summary: WOULD

Posted

the crash thing is i think a bit of a red herring, how could a 1970's car pass the 2000 regs, which are carried out at 45mph and offset instead of head on at 30mph? but then just how many of the old cars we all love do that well in a modern crash test!

incidentally didn't some BMW do poorly in the same batch of tests?

you are though quiet right, the late rover metros and 100's are really swish inside. i too have an urge to try one.

in the pictures above, the white rover metro H221JPR parked next to mine found a new owner at the show for £800, with new head gasket, bolts, thermostat, radiator, fan, all sorts done and nearly a full MOT. 27,000 mile too all with a stamped service book, done ever year upto i think 2004. it was garaged always, when the owner gave up driving, it then it went away, only been resurrected this spring.

the guy selling it had bought it to stop it going to scrap!

a proper bargain for someone.

it is just finding one that still has its wheel arches, floors and sills attached to the car!

METRO GETS YOU GOING. Quite. Top work MM.

I wish I had a Metro now :( would love to go and be part of such a happy and fun club as this one.

Top thread. Those early Metro vans are class. I'd love one.

Posted

i thought the wee vans were tops too, out of the 2, it is the green one which really did it for me, even though the white one is in completely mint and concourse condition.

just the green one did it for me, i guess it is the colour?

also, the owner bought it as a short term stop gap thing when he started a new business as a builder/decorator/odd job man. when her got it home he decided that the van was just too good to be abused like that, so it became more of a pampered pet instead of a works vehicle.

I was at the Slot Car Festival on Saturday. It was wicked. Our very own GarethJ was there demoing his wobbly wallowing cars.

I saw a few Metros on the M40 on Sunday and thought there might be something Metroey going on. There were millions of Minis going south on Saturday and north on Sunday, was it the London to Brighton or something?

Posted

I woz there too in the timeline with my hearing aid beige one. Was a great day out and Metro folk are a friendly bunch, been a member of the club for years now.

I've been on ebay tonight looking for K series ones as i really want another before prices for them go mental. Early cars are starting to fetch COIN at last, not that I plan on selling mine any time soon as I love it!

Gentleman??

I assumed from previous posts and the fact that Marvin the metro has a mom, that MM was part of Autoshite's small contingent of female posters...

I may be wrong though...and apologies to MM if so...

Posted

no you are indeed quiet correct, I am one of the rare females of the species...

last weekend was also the London to Brighton Mini run, in normal circumstances we would have taken the Mini down, but as it clashed with the Metro show at Gaydon we decided that we would go there for a change.

and I'm glad we did, as we had a really fab day out!
