Much_Marcle_Garage_-_geograph.org.uk_-_7

The first picture is of Weston's Garage and the sign to the left is to the cider mills. If you're into your cider (& I am!) Weston's cider is excellent stuff and it's still going strong! Much Marcle's most famous export (its other one being the[alleged] mass murderer Fred West, who was born there!)

Ebbett Motors in Hamilton NZ about 1950. Still in business and still GM dealer.

Rusholme. As far as I can see, nothing in this photo survives.

Chances are the Model A might have but I wouldn't hold much hope for the F type Victors or the Standard Atlas.

No it isn't.  When Practical Classics printed that (along with all the other press quoting the press release) I sent them a photo of the one that is only a couple of miles from me. Smaller but from the same series.  Can't find the photo at the moment but if I do I'll post it.

I'm sure I saw one in leicester aswell.

The one you saw is the Birstall BP garage, it's a Leicester suburb on the A6 ...

Near Hereford Cathedral.

The showroom is now an estate agents, the tyre depot building also.

H.D. Walker, on the A56 where it leaves Sale.

Expansion begins with a canopy over the pumps. If you can't make out that text on the roof, it reads "We can supply Taxis, Tyres, Tools". The larger slogan is "Old Black and White Garage", a rare example of a slogan which is much more accurate now than it was then!

post-17021-0-98998600-1450740945_thumb.jpg

But the old black and white garage isn't stuck in the past. This 1950s photograph shows the small glass palace showroom which was built alongside the old building. Some other photos show it to be Rootes affiliated.

Nothing says "Suburbs of south Manchester" like a Ford Fairlane.

Here's the latest photo I can find of it. It's now a Renault dealer, and going by their "New Renault 25" stickers in the window, it's 1983. Three years later the garage closed, and the site was redeveloped...

...into this Rubiks Cube inspired building. It currently houses the offices for a paper shredding company.

For me the above post about the black and white garage really somes up England.

You've gone from what was obviously an expensive Victorian detached house where they opened a garage in the garden which over time grew into quite a substantial business.

Then it closed. Fuck it, let's knock it all down put a faceless ugly building in its place, traffic lights and tons of railings. Sod everything let's cover the county in offices and giant tin sheds, it's the future! (rant over:-))

To Chester now, where we find Slade's Garage.

If Ol' Herbert stepped through a wormhole into 2015 he might recognise his garage but not much of its surroundings. He might wonder what happened to his neighbour, for a start. The building is currently empty - I tracked down the location from a rejected planning request to turn it into a takeaway.

Sorry, AlabamaShrimp, more railings!

While it might not have the Autoshite glamour of Blackpool's old Belle Vue Garage, who wouldn't enjoy stumbling across this beauty in SE Manchester?

Goodness only knows if those pump globes survived being used for decoration, but the building itself has dodged demolition. Unfortunately it looks like this now.

You know, I'm not deliberately looking for ruined old garages. If I keep looking, surely I'll find one which has been improved upon? Right?

This originally was a petrol station.

The iconic Sam Scorer designed Little Chef near Markham Moor.

My mate Ricky Adam took this shot - one of many great BMX/Skating pics on his site.

Apparently the guy was shitting himself, but 'had' to do it.  Fair play i say!

I drive by there so often and would love to own it as it has a very Tiki architectural feel and I could make it into my own little polynesian paradise (whilst never being able to sleep and getting the cansa).

The quest continues! In Baguley, 1972.

Although I remember it looking more like this, as Google found it in 2009. I don't recall it ever being a functional garage.

...and for the sake of completion, it soon succumbed to the inevitable.

The building has been partitioned and now houses a Subway, a Bargains Shop, a Post Office, and, of course...

[top 40 song fades out]

"For amazing deals on a new or used Vauxhall, come on down to Croft and Marlow! Just look for the building that literally looks like an honest to god slum!

[♪ jingle Ã¢â„¢Âª] No-one beats us on service or price, but you'll drive off with fleas and lice"

This was somewhere on the A6 in Ardwick, but I can't find it on StreetView. There was an 'investment company' with the same name registered at no. 152, but since that's all new buildings let's assume it's long gone.

edit: "[♪ jingle Ã¢â„¢Âª] Come buy a Vauxhall from our dump - the fire escape leads to a petrol pump"

It's 1971, and we're in an architecturally delightful bit of Northenden.

It's had a haircut, but it is the same building underneath all that red and yellow corporate branding.

You might want to brace yourself for this:

It took me a while to decide whether that was even the same building. If you check the historic StreetView you can see that the brick pillars are still there, but the building between them has been extensively... uh, remodelled. The canopy appears to be the same one.

Manchester Road, Bury:

The building survives, but it's suffered.

attachicon.gifcsb-2.jpg

Photo from this excellent website. There are more pictures, go visit.

Finneys is still going in the building behind the old showroom, although they stick to servicing and MOTs rather than selling cars these days from what I am told. We lived in Bury for a time in the early 90s and by that point Finneys had the Renault franchise, but they lost it around 1992/3 I think and moved out of the showroom. Anyway have some "ancient garages" from where we are now....

I'm not as Street View savvy as Mr Conelrad, so I can't show you how they were improved.
