New and different shite for useless woman?

In 2-3 weeks time I will be waving a sad-dish farewell to my BX TZD, because the BX Hurricane is back on the road (yay!) and it's silly to have 2 cars that are, essentially, identical.

So, I will need a new daily driver. I will have a go at some mechanical type stuff, right up to the point that I don't have the physical strength to get the sodding bolts undone (yes, I know it's lefty-loose-y). Apart from changing lightbulbs and fuses, I'm scared of the electrickery type magics, because, see thread title.

What might I like? It'll be driving a mix of town/traffic, motorway, A road/rural road miles. Commute is 50 mile round trip, so preferably something not toooo thirsty. Probably petrol and reasonably nippy, not a barge. Budget flexible-ish to £1K depending on my mood (again, see thread title) and what's offered - I'd prefer to buy a semi-known quantity from a shiter than throw myself on the mercy* of ebay ...

The Audi, whilst I'm tempted by the colour, would be SILLY as it meets practically none of the other criteria. MX5 ... hmmm, maybe, if it's still around by mid-May?

Sensible (or hilarious) suggestions please?

Oh, I thought that one had gone, read fail. Look like he needs it gone sooner, is also a possibility if it's still around mid-May. Should have also mentioned in first post that I'm old and have full no claims, so insurance *a* consideration, not the first though.

As stated on an earlier thread, focus, petrol flavour. Buy one with sills and the MOT man will love you forever.

Triumph Dolomite 1850. Clearly the car for the job.

....Audi A8 4.2....?

Help needed.................Calling Louise2cv to the front desk please.

Triumph Dolly is another I'd like to try as I grew up with dad's 1934 Gloria and have a soft spot for the marque, plus, model has same name as a rock, what's not to love? Reluctantly, it's in the 'Don't be silly' corner.

I only like 2CVs to look at and as passenger on short journeys, I don't Do Pink and slanty headlights just make a car look angry - I'm convinced they contribute to aggression on the roads.

Perhaps something in a Saab or Volvo?

Sometimes it's good to find one of those motorshow guides from the era you're looking for (say mid to late 1990s) and browse through for cars you never knew existed or had long forgotten about.

Yep, I reckon Jon's MX-3 ticks most of the boxes. It comes in well under-budget too, so you could possibly put the extra towards a blow-over respray.

A nice boring Peugeot 306.  Loads about, fairly easy to fix, not too big/small, practical (hatch/5 doors), comfortable, petrols not too thirsty, great fun to drive, good on motorway, starting to get scarcer, loads of choice for well under a grand,

Shall I go on...?

MGF

there is bound to be one on e-by-gum-bay for under a bag.

I'm using mine for exactly what you describe, and it's proving to be boringly reliable and economical, even when driven like it's stolen. Mr Cade and Brother Bargeken of this parish are your spirit masters in buying one of these magnificent examples of hand-built British sports cars.

WCP etc etc

edit:- here we go, even 'shite-approved

MGF has the disadvantage of being a real pest to spanner.

I'd flog this one for under a grand (paid £1100 for it) but for all the good bits - glass window top, new clutch, usual engine service/failure stuff done, new water pipes etc. - it has a hole in the sill with some nasty bodge. It needs attention from a welder.

MX5 1.6 will struggle to better 30mpg on motorways, they're not geared for it.

I'd say for that mixture, a Mercedes 200 CLK or if you find one in budget, one of those C-class Sportshatches with the glass pano top. Otherwise save many pennies and go for the 306 - could even get a ragtop for that (but the seats are offset slightly relative to the wheel - I ended up sitting on the bolster on mine).

Or by mid-May, maybe the MG6 will have depreciated enough. One of our local shoddy dealers in Coventry (PXSwaps in Longford Park) has one. If one has fallen into their hands, it's like the car is enjoying a normal car lifestyle at 3x the pace. They'll probably be officially recognised classics in 3 years.

Sorted.

OMFG MGF. My dad (a Triumph man) would turn in his grave. If he was dead, which he isn't, so stuff him.

Short collection story next Weds.

CBA to check, is that the one that goes past Stonehenge? If so, the Fri before a Bank Holiday, I should think the MGFs weren't the only cars getting hot and bothered.

I would imagine there'll be a lot of that around here too.  A Bank Holiday weekend would seem like an ideal time to take out my new purchase for a shakedown, but I live in the Lake District.  Hmm, maybe not...

No probs. Gen, I have found mine a really easy & fun car to live with.

& I'm loving the dark alloys, too

Let's see this BX that's going then. I doubt you'll find anything as good tbh as they are obviously TEH BEST CARZ EVAH

I am retaining one BX - the TZD Hurricane. The pram handle 'regular' TZD is going to a good home :) It actually runs slightly better than the Hurricane at the moment, think the Hurricane has a sticky throttle cable, and the clutch is quite high. All fixable.

Spot the difference...
