John F Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 The e36 coupe is a heavy old beast. My iS did 40mpg on the commute. My brother's 328i coupe did 35 and was lunatic fun. Get a 6banger-life is too short for too many valves and no enough cylinders Agreed, the 318 isn't really all that sporty (although they are pleasant enough to drive)
Bear Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Cambelt every 72K, crap access, guaranteed expensive misery and also looks sexy on the outside but like a knackered minicab on the inside. Perfect, I'd have thought...
Tetleysmooth Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Or there's always this, from the blue forum: http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/178128/1994-mercedes-e280-epsom-surrey
Noel Tidybeard Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 +1 - Perfect for what you need. Has got (I think) the MR2 engine in these with the VTECKIKEDINYOE above 5k rpm. I had one and it was fab! EDIT - on a side note, I find myself in the very same predicament. I'm fed up with the Astra and want something a bit more sporty with room for t'kid too.nay it was a celica donk with about 175 horseys
sporty-shite Posted April 29, 2015 Author Posted April 29, 2015 How old/large are the kids?4 & 6 years old. I took them to school in the Alfa this morning, and the legroom was dire, and I also noticed more that they seem to be sitting in a box, due to the high windows. No wonder they don't like it, it's properly claustrophobic.

Nice though. Honda's over budget unfortunately. Still looking.

Lacquer Peel Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Volvo 780 by Bertone 2.4TD. Serious suggestion: C70.
sporty-shite Posted May 3, 2015 Author Posted May 3, 2015 Volvo 780 by Bertone 2.4TD. Serious suggestion: C70.I've seen a couple of C70s advertised and they are strangely alluring. Getting out any distance this weekend is a bit of a pain though.

sporty-shite Posted May 4, 2015 Author Posted May 4, 2015 May have something sorted. Off to view shortly. Otherwise, that Volvo turbo might be getting it!
Jim Bell Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 How about a Rover 25 Gti 1.8 VVC?I may have to sell mine to fund repairs on the 305. New cam belt, water pump, coolant hoses, saab valve, head gasket (about 2k ago), lots of toys, working air con, new goodyear tyres. Fast, reliable, practical. And fast. Has genuine patina on one front corner. Other than that, very smart. http://autoshite.com/topic/18892-rover-25-gt-weyaye-is-fixed/
sporty-shite Posted May 4, 2015 Author Posted May 4, 2015 I'm finally fixed up with a cheap snotter. Coincidentally shot in the same petrol station as the GTV collection shot. Sporty Jr is in the drivers seat, talking to the taxi driver on the next pump!! It's a 1.8 Bertone coupe. Bit of a ding in the N/S door, and it's got drug dealer tints on the back window. Could also do woth a good clean and polish, but it came in under budget with nearly 12 months MOT, so can't be too bad. Initial impression is that it drives nicely but it's no ball of fire. However, with a bit of luck, it'll be good on juice, seeing as my next placement is 30 miles away. If there's anything worth documenting, I'll start a thread, but don't hold your breath! All Vauxhalls aren't shit. Rusty_Rocket and M'coli 2
John F Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Ah, a Calibra Mk 2. Not a bad choice, they're quite attractive for the money.
cort16 Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I like the look of these but they should have tried a bit harder with the interior. I had a 1.8 one and thought it was quite nice to drive. Not really fast though.
Cavcraft Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 My work here is done. bub2006, Lord Sterling and sporty-shite 3
cort16 Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Showsies. They are cheap though I think I paid £450 quid for this a couple of years ago then had a nightmare when the oil pressure thingy inside the filter housing burst while changing the oil and I had to buy a whole new filter unit housing. Good times. disastra2 by cort16, on Flickr Cavcraft 1

Not really fast though.Know what you mean about interior, although it's only like the Calibra having a Can trim or the 406 coupe feeling like a taxi.
cort16 Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 That's true the 406 coupe interior is just as un-inspiring.
Bear Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Cambelt every 72K, crap access, guaranteed expensive misery Keith just left a Xantia V6 here, with belts overdue. Right, so if that's how that works... "Deloreans are shit. Doors stay shut and the chassis rust."
