I assumed with the size of your fleet you were on a trade policy already? Surely that'd work out cheaper?

Posted

Trade policy £700, Roadrunner. You are allowed to be a part time trader with a salary from another job. You practically are a trader anyway given all the cars that pass through your hands.

I think the general rule for trade policy is you buy/sell a minimum of 10 cars p/a, which will be nae bother for you innit.

I'm not sure on what basis an insurer can decide they don't want your business any more, you'd think they would appreciate all the money you're giving them?

Perhaps...

There's six 300 series Volvos here at the moment.

As others have said, part time trading is no problem , just be honest with them. I'm with Tradewise as a part time trader declaring that I also have a Private Hire policy . I pay £1200 for fully comp cover with a £10,,000 own car limit. My wife is on the policy with business use as a Social Worker on anything she drives. You can have personal cars on for as long as you like-her CLK for 10 years and Freelander for 5, for example. You can list new cars on the MID online 24 hrs a day , on a couple of occaisions the online has said it'll cover 3rd party only if a high group, but the next day they phoned me and Sid it's ok we'll cover fully comp.

Over the years a few restrictions have been added, currently no LHD or Kit Cars for some reason, I don't have bike cover because it made it cheaper a few years ago and I haven't bought a bike for years.

At one time there was a No RS Ford clause, but that seems to have gone.

I'll have to sample a 300 series at some point but unfortunately I've all the excuses!

Fitted some rev counter clocks to the 340 from the 360 and swapped over to a 360 glt steering wheel.

I'm hoping that the rev counter might help when trying to set up the carb. 1942e4c34e1edaaa5ff277120dff17f6.jpg

I've been lacking motivation to do anything car related lately but managed to find the motivation to fit a choke cable on the Ladas Weber carb and I removed the knackered exhaust silencer and welded a straight pipe in its place. It's still relatively quiet.

I also took the opportunity to get some pics of the 305 van in the daylight.

I should probably just get it in for an mot to see what else it actually needs but it seems to drive ok an 99% of the welding is done with just a small patch required to join one of the rear arches to the rear valance.

I bought a new carb base and gaskets for the 340 and fitted them but it made absolutely no difference to the idling issue so I sold it on to a guy I know in Edinburgh who has a similar collection of old cars including my old Carlton.

I've been driving the W123 daily for the last month or so, it's been a decent and reliable car. I had considered selling it recently to raise some funds for a deposit on a house but with some uncertainty with my employment and the house I was after being taken off the market I no longer feel the need to move so will be keeping the Merecedes.

I got some quotes for a trade policy and it was working out at £900 for all of my cars so might just go for that to make life easier.

Did you see the Reliant for £350 i posted on the ebay tat thread? Near you.

Posted

Yep...either middle or rear silencer can go on a cat Riva without any major change in noise level.  Mine is missing the middle one after it fell off.  Need to tidy up the shoddy welding job I did before the MOT though.

A lot of standard trade policies won't cover cars over 25 years old or restrict them to road risks only.

I mentioned on the phone the ages of all of the cars I wanted to insure and they didn't seem too bothered about it.

Spent a bit more time on the 305 van today. I finished off the welding at the rear of the van and chucked a tub of seam sealer on to make it look a bit less shit.

I finished off the wiring for the rear wiper and number plate lights which I chopped when swapping the tailgates over, I swapped over one of the broken headlights, while the headlight was out I checked to see why the sidelight and indicator wasn't working and discovered that somebody had kindly removed the bulb holder before I got the van, luckily I had a spare one from my spares car so now have working headlights, tail lights, indicators and a rear number plate light (I need to replace a number plate bulb).

It's still not perfect, I doubt it ever will be but it's an improvement over what it was like when it got here.

Today I went to Pitlochry to collect a 2.0 Fiat twin cam which was from a 132 but was last fitted to a 124. I plan on fitting it to the Lada at some point this year.

Also included with the engine was a gearbox, prop shaft, disc brake axle with suspension and an exhaust. My plan for the moment is to mount the engine onto the Lada gearbox but that will be a job for the end of the summer I think.

That would be very cool. Was the 305 van the collection vehicle?

Unfortunately not, the 305 is just being used as a shed at the moment.

I am living the dream by proxy..

I have stayed up the last three nights until 2am reading this thread from the start and I recon this would make an incredible 'Coffee table book'... just like those ones that are around at Christmas... Do yourself a favour, knock some pictures together, bung some writing near them and self publish..  I've lost 6hrs sleep.. I might be wrong...

All this Car porn and still paying 250 sheets a month rent.. That's proper dedication that is, some people think a hobby is 'just something to do' this thread proves that a hobby can be a massive commitment.. Down here in the South of Hampshire a yard like this would be £500 a week at least plus taxes etc..

Looking at the early posts, I would never guess you were a welder.. lol..  I for one hope and pray that the supply of cheap older vehicles goes on for ever.. these modern electronic tosh tractors that are 'saving the planet by being made out of plastic and are twice the size that a car should be' are not repairable after 5 years let alone the 25 years that a proper 'recyclable car' can achieve..

FOAD you are a proper modern day hero.. The young of tomorrow have no idea how to fix an engine or weld metal or make 'personal improvements' by swapping BX seats into C15 etc.. just because you can..

This thread is what the internet was invented for ..

BTW I did my apprentiship on Fiats back in the 80's and rust on delivery was not unusual.. but there were a few honey wagons that stole my heart, an old bloke used to bring his 124 spyder in every year for a service and the miles on the clock were nearly the same every year.. 132 and 131 going to the scrappy whole sale.. we were scrapping cars like these every week, who remembers the strada ? I'm not talking about the Intergerale but the standard 1.5 or 1.1 crap heaps.. I had a near perfect looking 127 1050C as my first car but the rear inner wheel arches were missing, they rotted out and the MOT man didn't notice.. a good reason to never clean under the wheel arches.. I bought a 'project' Punto last year, it had been standing for 18 months, it would run but needed a complete exhaust.. I started Undersealing and guess what, the inner wheel arches were completely rotted out so I sold the car to a man for parts..

I am stuck with a big box of Fiat parts that even listing on ebay I can't get shot of.. I have boxes of old car parts, cam belts, wheel cylinders brake pads, filters etc.. Any ideas on what to do with them ??

Thanks for reading, I honestly didn't think anybody would ever bother reading this thread from the start so well done for getting to the end.
