DodgyBastard Posted September 2, 2017 Author Posted September 2, 2017 Daft question, why do they need people to weld stuff together when they are taking the subs apart? We need to weld lifting pads to the deck head inside the reactor which enable components to be lifted out.. Also there is an insert cut into the side of the submarine to allow access into the reactor, we will have to weld it back on at some point to ensure the sub will float. Cheezey Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 I wondered the same! Interesting explanation though. Well done on the Peugeot MoT. eddyramrod 1
oldcars Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 How do you weld up the sill with all the wiring behind it? Do you need to remove the interior and move the wiring and then put it all back?

That makes me think they're cutting it into 2ft squares, lobbing it in a transit & weighing it in.
nisfan Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Looking forward to seeing this soon, well bought and by the sounds of it better than the red one

Cant believe theyre finally going! thought theyd just let them sit as they didnt know what to do with the waste.

Cant believe theyre finally going! thought theyd just let them sit as they didnt know what to do with the waste. It's a 20 year contract and there's quite a few submarines to dismantle. Currently working on swiftsure, the plan is to remove the secondary nuclear waste, weld it up and put it back in the sea then at some point later bring it back to remove the primary waste then weigh the rest in at Henry's grays... Christine Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 Did you know Harry at the dockyard Foad .... 'arry Rogers from Chatham ? He retired shortly after Kursk disaster ... DodgyBastard 1
DodgyBastard Posted September 2, 2017 Author Posted September 2, 2017 More SDP info can be found here https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/submarine-dismantling-project Found this photo on the net of a similar sub down at Rosyth, this is a pretty similar setup to the current Submarine apart from it doesn't have a massive hole in the side of it. DodgyBastard Posted September 2, 2017 Author Posted September 2, 2017 How do you weld up the sill with all the wiring behind it? Very carefully. Thankfully the carpets just lift up but I might need to remove the drivers seat to get better access. The wiring you can see is the tubing for the central locking system so hopefully I can pull it to the side when welding. oldcars 1
DodgyBastard Posted September 7, 2017 Author Posted September 7, 2017 Welding started, it's not pretty but will hopefully get it through an mot and into use. Sent from my F5321 using Tapatalk andy18s, oldcars, derskine and 13 others 16

DodgyBastard Posted September 7, 2017 Author Posted September 7, 2017 A bit more grinding, some primer, Filler and paint and it will be done. Sent from my F5321 using Tapatalk Exiled_Tat_Gatherer, DeeJay, Lacquer Peel and 7 others 10

I've run out of 1.2mm wire so have been trying to get to grips with the 0.8 stuff, I'm not sure which one I prefer to be honest. Rod/b Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 This is certainly progressing quickly! Nice work Mr Foad.
blackboilersuit Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Nice work. I'm interested to know why you normally choose 1.2mm wire to weld panels. I weld everything from 0.8mm sheet up to 3mm plate with 0.6mm wire without a problem but as I'm self taught with a MIG I'm wondering is there a technical reason that the bigger wire could be better?

Christine Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 How they stamp a broad arrow on a 1.2 mm wire ?? Did you know Harry , foad ?
DodgyBastard Posted September 7, 2017 Author Posted September 7, 2017 How they stamp a broad arrow on a 1.2 mm wire ?? Did you know Harry , foad ? Harry? There's a Harry that's in the middle of retiring in my department but other than that I don't know any other Harry's in the dockyard. Christine 1
Christine Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 He left- took early retirement after Kursk went down 2000 ..was troubled by it ..having been doing subs all his life. He would have been a collar ,in the office up there , started as apprentice at Chatham on Polaris subs ,worked his way to the top. When Chatham dockyard closed he had to move with his family (and the subs) to Rosyth. Nicest and funniest bloke i ever knew.. Dead now, but i think of him nearly every day , my older cousin.
Christine Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 You youngster ! In 1963, Our 'arry shared a dressing room with Paul McCartney,at the Invicta Ballrooms Chatham..best band competition.. Amazingly a band called The Beatles won.. No one ever remembers who came in second place ...but he could play a mean lead guitar !! egg and Sheefag 2

DodgyBastard Posted September 8, 2017 Author Posted September 8, 2017 DSC_0127 by srblythe, on Flickr Ball joint ordered for tomorrow but think I might need new calipers as well as the new brake lines up front. I'll be replacing the front wings at some point too.Driving to and from the mot with no brakes wasn't much fun, I used the handbrake to slow down and drove at 20 everywhere. I'm hoping to get it sorted and in for the free retest shortly. Dirk Diggler, DeeJay, Exiled_Tat_Gatherer and 1 other 4
Cheezey Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Not too bad. Appropriately named testing station as well.
MorrisItalSLX Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 This thing is looking TEH DOGZ BOLUCKS I really must get myself a W123, but maybe a slightly less rusty one...
Lacquer Peel Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 DO NOT PAINTI know they can rust for fun in awkward places, that's not a bad fail list
derskine Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 In most cases I would agree with DO NOT PAINT, but in this case, I think it needs painted so it can display the level of class it really is. They_all_do_that_sir, oldcars, Lacquer Peel and 1 other 4
