twosmoke300 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Rightio . Bike has gone and I've been saving up for a landrover . I know I know there shit but I grew up with series threes and just want one or an early defender . No discos or rangeys . Looking to spend four grand max . Don't care if it's diesel or petrol but would prefer a lwb for some reason . Originality is important . I know it's a tall order at my budget but I'm in no rush . Oh I nearly forgot NO CHECKER PLATE or big wheels .
HillmanImp Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 You can buy my Dads one, D701 SWL if you want. he bought it brand new in 1987. jakebullet, UltraWomble, The Old Bloke Next Door and 5 others 8
320touring Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Boom , first post !2nd technically;) HillmanImp 1
I_am_Diesel Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 You shouldn't do bad with 4 grand. I would recommend one with a 300Tdi, I work on them regularly and whilst they ain't perfect they're still not a bad motor. Chassis, bulkhead rust etc.
Bren Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Nobody buys these any more - they just lift them in the dead of the night...
twosmoke300 Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 Aye a 300tdi is the best option but I'd rather have a better example over a more desire able engine if you know what I mean .
jakebullet Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Er series 3 / early 110 doesn't come with a 300 tdi. You need misery. 109 with a 2 1/4 diesel. Or a perkins 4203. scruff and alf892 2
Albert Ross Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I advise to ignore anything with an engine conversion. Rules may be tightening relative to things like that. Don't get caught with your pants down. There are Series specific selling pages on Facebook. Have a laugh on there for a bit.
twosmoke300 Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 300tdi came out in the defender in 94 cos dad bought one of the first brand spankers. Still pretty early in the grand scheme of things. I agree about avoiding things with conversions . Also wary of ones with galv chassis as you have to trust who has had it to bits .
The Old Bloke Next Door Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 1972 109, chassis up rebuild in 2005, Jap 2.8 turbo, Ashcroft high ratio box, new axles, parabolics, gas shocks, 90 seats, cruises at 70, £3000.I can replace the jap lump for a recon 2286 diesel and fit a standard gearbox with good overdrive, swop the big tyres for a set of good 750's and remove the front wing chequer plate for the same price.More detail, pics available, full mot.

twosmoke300 Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 Old Bloke Next Door . Thanks for posting that one up , looks a useful truck but is what im trying to avoid in a landy tbh . What jap engine is it? scruff 1
Rusty_Rocket Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 You know what, I think a Land Rover is one of the few cars you're better off building to your spec and standards, rather than buying one 'already done'. I know that's not practical for most folk but that's the route I'm taking.Bought a 110 County SW and it will hopefully* be ready for this winter. Mine is stolen/ recovered with front-end damage and I bought it blind off Copart for £1800. The parts are very cheap and I know that by the time it's back in one piece, I'll know every inch of the bloody thing.. but at least there should be no nasty surprises that way. If you're happy to drive a van/ pickup variant, I'd say you'll get a better one for your money the nearer you get to London I_am_Diesel 1
scruff Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 A nice series three that no-one has fucked around with and running the original engine is a lovely thing. I have had loads of S3s and my favourite was one nobody had "got at". Good luck in your search!!
The Old Bloke Next Door Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Old Bloke Next Door . Thanks for posting that one up , looks a useful truck but is what im trying to avoid in a landy tbh . twosmoke300 Posted April 27, 2015 Author Posted April 27, 2015 I've founded one . Mr brookjm pmd me about his 90 petrol . Went up this evening with brother in the Saab ( which decided to spring a leak from the heater valve) . It's exactly as he said it was , bit scabby but so original and lovely for it . It came home with me and I can't stop smiling RobT, Steviemillar, scruff and 3 others 6
HMC Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 I was sorry to see it go, Its originality was what I really liked about it too, but glad it's gone to a good home! JohnK 1
twosmoke300 Posted April 27, 2015 Author Posted April 27, 2015 Just ordered a lift kit , massive mud terrains and an 8x4 of checker plate 😉 HMC and scruff 2
strangeangel Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 For God's sake don't buy a Series 3. Not unless you like walking and welding (don't ask me how I know). EDIT: you didn't! Well done!
CHRIS1980 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 200 and 300tdi's are real gems of an engine. I had a defender 200tdi and loved it. It was a it sluggish to start with, but a good service and a can of 10k diesel and normal service resumed.
twosmoke300 Posted May 14, 2015 Author Posted May 14, 2015 Landy fettling commenced today . Not by me but my employee ( get me !) . He's an old boy who loves the old stuff and really careful and sympathetic . New manifold plate , bolts and gasket sorted the exhaust blow . Halogen headlight conversion cos sealed beams hard to come by these days . Then weld up the back door frame up where the spare has cracked it . It's like a new one with out a chuffing exhaust and sounding like the spare was about to fall off. Well happy Rusty_Rocket, UltraWomble, scruff and 1 other 4
scruff Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 Class!! I love these 2.5 petrols. I bet there aren't many left now!
twosmoke300 Posted May 14, 2015 Author Posted May 14, 2015 Prob not but such a solid reliable engine .
