^^^ whs.. Dad used either 740/240 or 940 for towing vans. All auto 2.3 engines. All estates and all had 7 seats full,2 dogs and at least 18ft worth of caravan with awning etc towed all over the country. Only thing my dad said bettered a volvo was either a 2.6 or 3.5 sd1. But they never did a 7 seater!

Last thing you want is a car expiring in the M5 with caravan and family in tow.

That's just as more likely to happen with a forecourt £2500 special which is only 12 years old than a big old school Merc or Volvo, or that SsangYong thing. I've seen infinitely more electronicified modern shit like X5s expired on the hard shoulder than Merc 124s.

Has to be one of the following, Citroen ZX Advantage, Shogun or 940 SE Turbo.

They were all towcar of the year in there class the year your van was made. What better car to pull the van than towcar of the year.

Just a thought, instead of buying a tow car you could use the money to stop in Holiday accommodation that does not require you to muck out once a day?

Mitsi Galant might be a good call, you can get V6 versions for well under a grand.

I must admit, the only thing I find attractive about caravanning is the prospect of being able to chimp my own faeces without fear of being arrested.

We have no toilet in our van, i'm not doing the shite walk in the morning. What the hell did they built toilet blocks for if your meant to shit in the van?

Xantia or an XM would be quite a good choice, particularly the latter in estate diesel form because MAHOOSIVE and good on the fuel.  Both can still be got cheap without serious problems.

Has to be a Renner 21.

The Caravan Club said so in the last year when cars were any good, 1986. (Junkman, Book of Cars, Ch4vv1-4)

Modern stuff is too powerful

Big is best when towing.. and a tdi Discovery is the only thing you'll ever need..

Sure, they're not without their issues but are cheap, reliable and economical!

If I still have it then, you could borrow my 940 for a couple of weeks. Perfect for the job.

Fit a towbar and I'll swap my ZX volcane for your car for the duration?

I know of a J-reg Pajero SWB with a 2.5td engine and tow bar up for sale for ~£800 if you're interested. It has capably towed a 24' RIB around and about and pulls like a train. Reckon you could coax 28mpg out of it unladen, probably more like 24mpg towing but it'd do the job.

PM me for moar informations

Also, why are you selling the alpha romererererererero if you know you need a tow car for the summer? I may have missed another thread about it so sorry if its already been covered!

Lots of good advice here and thanks for the offer of a loan volvo and other suggestions. Very generous. A lot can change in a few months but all food for thought. I'll let you know how I get on.

Xantia if you can find one

Citroen C5

Towed car trailers for thousands of miles with both. FANTASTIC tow cars. Got a Shogun now but only because of the legal towing limits.....

Towed very well in between breakdowns

Towed OK in a beige kind of way

Quite frankly the best tow car I have ever had. Even beating the C8 for towing ability.

Has an 1800kg towing capacity but the back end needs beeding up if you are going to use all of that.

These are also pretty good, but not IMHO as good as a Xantia

These are good, cheap and tow 2000kgs but are

i) agricultural to drive

ii) pretty shit on diesel

iii) not good for fat blokes due to fuck all space inside

These fucking rock up big time for towing ability, 20 tonnes easily and do 20 miles to a bag of coal.

I feel something French coming on although a traction engine is now also on the list. Just need to set off 3 days early. Will probably be more reliable too!

Traction engine FTW, my grandfather had a Fowler that he used to piss about with in the 60's and 70's. Yes he did know Fred, No it isnt still in the family. Wooden brakes (blocks on the driven wheels and a chunk of sleeper) for slowing it down and a top speed of 6 mph. As far as I know its still owned by a nutter enthusiast up Grange way.

Hello  :happydance:

I changed my user name because I was being cyber-stalked by a GP surgery I went for a job at and I wanted to look whiter than white as they knew my K11 moniker from my Flickr feed. Doesn't look good me swearing and being very odd all over the interweb. As it happens I ended up staying where I was and they know I swear and am odd and don't much care,
