Choices, choices, choices

Choices, choices, choices. Always choices.

  1. 1. Given the choice, which of these 3 cars would be the car of choice for an old farty git with a dodgy back and legs.

    • 2002 Rover 45 1.8 auto with all the bells and whistles. Nice colour. Low miles, history and one lady owner. Seller is abrupt.
      11
    • MG ZT - 2.5 V6 auto, decent miles, good service history including belts. Good colour. Seller seems friendly enough.
      32
    • 1999 Rover 75, auto, decent miles, service history, not sure about belts. Scuff to rear bumper. Friendly private seller.

45 may be too small,mg would be too stiff therefore the best option would be a 75. This is autoshite though so you may end up buying a large manual 4x4 with stiff clutch!

Agree with the above.

Plus it wouldn't be shite if we knew the belts had been done and it didn't have that scuff...

Ok, some votes coming through. Comments about your votes would be interesting.

My 2p worth.

The 45 is in a nice colour, light metallic blue. The interior is tidy  and has black leather seats. Low mileage - 20 something thou with decent history, although not sure of belt change, etc or head gasket woes in the past. Seller is a minimalistic communication. Nothing to do on the car apart from maybe the belts for added confidence, maybe a coolant change just for the hell of it.

The ZT - auto is unusual, fun car, great colour, good history including belts and so on. Nothing needs doing to it, just get in and drive. Buy a black leather 75 interior cos I is not overly fond of alcantra.

The R75, dark blue, nice interior, needs a bumper scuff sorting. History but no evidence of belt doings. Get in and drive. Seller pretty friendly. Comfy and waftomatic but been there before and might not light any fires. Belts and bits will need doing.

The listings end pretty much within a couple of hours of each other and I won't be able to access eBay due to work.

Head says 45, heart says ZT, autoshite gene says large 4x4 with..... arrghh. R75.

The car will be a bit of a toy so another edging to the ZT methinks.

the 45 with the awkward seller obvs- its the autoshite way

The 45.......

The times I have bought stuff from a 'nice' bloke and something has turned to shit.

At least buying from an awkward twat it will be easier to get awkward with him when a bulb goes.

KV6 2.5. The only one to have :)

Apart from the V8 that is.

I suffer with left side hemi paresis and something awry in my back and there isn't way I could tolerate sports seats and stiff suspension. Buy what feels right for you mate and what you think will be best overall

I voted 75 just cos I like them. But being sensible sorting Teh belts could easily make an apparently cheap 75 suddenly a lot more expensive though.

Posted

If I went for the ZT, I could always swap the seats out for 75 items, they would be much more comfortable. My mate has the diesel tourer version and it isn't too bad.

The worst suspension ever was in my Smart car, I do believe it didn't actually have suspension, just bricks rammed in there instead. I can remember the pain even now.

Getting a belt job on a 75 would range between 500 to 700 quid.

I told you to buy Suzuki, You bloody well ignored that ! So I went for the MG because MG = mid-life crisis motoring with comfy seats. They all sound good and you don't have to live with seller 1

Well, decision has been made. Full bid whacked on to eBay as I won't be able to access ebay as I am working when the auction ends.

What have I bid on?

The ZT.

If I am unsuccessful then there are a couple of 75 options to consider.

Car orientated bonus................ Mrs. PBK likes the look of 'em. She also liked the Beetle. This is almost unheard of, trust me on that one.

Thanks for the votes and the comments everybody. The ZT and 75 were pretty close vote-wise anyway :)

As soon as I hear...........

I just want your bloody car port man. I lust after it :)

I am shocked, this is Autoshite and you have made a choice before anyone could suggest you bought something sensible like an Enfield Electric or Cadillac Eldorado

For the money I have, there are thousands of manual cars that would fit the bill. Auto? Nah.

Its bad enough parking here with the i10, imagine an Eldorado

Sorry, it's full atm so can't spare it.

i voted for the R75 instead of the ZT as i prefer the rover.

also the MG does have stiff suspension so i would think that would be a better choice for someone with a dodgey back and the insurance is less.

when i got mine i got the meerkats to quoter me for both, and the rover was half the price that the mg came out at, for basically the same bloody car!

oddly enough i prefer the look of the mark 1 rover, of the early cars, and prefer the look of the mark 2 mg's for the later ones, but i am odd...

At least he hasn't bid on a 4 headed vm range rover with Manual box

I don't see what the abruptness of the seller is about.  Some people are like that. Look at the car, be polite, if you want the car, think they are telling the truth, make an offer, make it low but explain why.

What I hate is friendly bullshitty sellers, who have charm, and lie.  Those belts ? They haven't been done. Yes he's got a receipt but he faked it last night, just after you asked him about them.

I look at it this way. I am polite and write polite emails/messages. I try and tell the prospective buyer all that I know about a car, its plus points and its faults. I take pics of what I can and am open.

I am of a certain age and background where politeness is important to me and rightly or wrongly enables me to make a decision about the person and what they are selling.

The seller of the 45 said certain things in the ad. I asked about 3 or 4 questions that were sensible and in line with the make and model of the car, I asked about cam belt change, coolant loss, head gasket issues and what the little black box was above the clock.

All I got back was 'parking sensor'. That was it, no comments about anything else. I sent back a message saying thanks for letting me know what it was, is there any chance you can let me know about x,y and z. Nothing, no reply whatsoever. That does irritate me and puts me off. Granted it might not put other people off but it does me. I buy a lot of my cars from ebay and have been caught out twice. Not bad going I suppose.

The ZT seller was more polite, informative, said that they didn't know about a couple of points. Simple and straightforward. It might be bollocks but it ends up with me being able to make a decision.

The 45 might be a peach, the seller might be a nice bloke. The ZT might be a shitpig, the seller a fuckwit.

That is the chance any of us takes.

I've sold a few cars on here now, I like to think that I am honest, straightforward, welcoming and tell it like it is. I communicate with people, it isn't that hard :-D

I get a price or deal that we are all happy with and that is bloody brilliant. I might get more for a car elsewhere but doing deals on here is fun and I get to meet some of the oddballs, I mean upstanding members of society that I interact with on a daily basis on this here forum.

Wish me luck with the ZT  :D

The 45 sounds the nicest, though I'm not a huge fan on the 1.8 Kettle and never tried the auto box (CVT IIRC?).

KV6 is lovely, the ZT sounds the best of the other two options but I just can't do business with MGs, they do nowt for me. Think I'd go for the 45.

I asked a couple of questions about a 75 earlier today. The seller just reponded... NO.

I sent back: NO? Sorry? NO service history? NO pixels in the message centre or NO, the car isn't anywhere in London?

So I guess, NO, I won't be bidding on the car then.

Think I'll buy a pushbike instead. Nooooooooo

Hmm. I'd discount both the kv6 engines because of the belt thing and the stiff set up of the MG. BUT the low mileage 45 will not have had the OMGHGF yet so you'd have that to look forward to. Anything else in the pipeline, preferably Swedish and Brick shaped? One of those would fit the bill and no shortage of autos,

Posted

I don't care how shit the MG is - it had the belts done, more than enough reason to buy.

The other two are belt/HGF roulette.

whilst fully aware that you have already decided and the poll is closed, I vote for the Cadilac Eldorado mentioned earlier.
