Talk to me about Xantia's & XM's / Anyone Near Burnley, Lancashire?

So I'm looking at the Ebay page of a Citroen Peugeot specialist and they've got a couple of cars I'm liking the look of but I don't know anything about Citroen's. To those of you with experience of these angular, floaty French things; of this lot which would be the safest bet as a replacement daily?

Which of the three different engines is the best?

OR should I press the eject button ASAP and run the fuck away from them?

1. Xantia 1.9 TDI

Description gives the impression that it's a solid car but there's no mention of service history.

On paper the silver Xantia looks to be the best but dat XM doe.

Is there anyone nearby that could have a poke around them for me?

Head says silver xantia.

Heart says xm.

Silver xantia easiest to live with.

XM like the large hadron collider in comparison.

I like the Xantia TD best, minimal electrickery and not much to go wrong with it, 75k is no mileage for an XUD.

Silver is a bland colour, but at least Hammerite is available in silver.

I wouldn't pass up the HDi but I prefer the look of Mk1 cars, they're better built.

Xantia TD

No contest. The other two will probably make you cry

If the mileage is genuine and been looked after that will be a great car. Just make sure the cluch isn`t too heavy

Had a few Xantias and dont live too far away. Only issue is that I going to London for Weekend but can have a look next week if that helps?

Oh and agreed the Silver Xantia. HDi does give better MPG and can be remapped to make it faster but XUD can be tweaked as well

I know nothing about Citroen's. I would buy one of the top two, and the reason being the seller can look into the future, as both photos are taken in 2031, so the cars have at least 16 years life left in them. Hope this helps  :?

It's a serious problem.

Are the Xantia 1.9's veg friendly?

Just make sure the cluch isn`t too heavy

What would that indicate?

I think they've had them for sale for a while now so I'm sure waiting 'til next week won't hurt. As for tuning, it'd be an achievement for a 1.9 litre car to be slower than the Swift so I'm sure it'd be adequate enough.

Silver 1.9 should be Bosch with a little touch of added electronics but veg friendly with the added bonus of fuel pre-heating from the coolant.

A little high (not that much) on the price, I'd say but it does looks cracker, 1.9TD would be my choice of the three.

I'm a little wary of the 2.5-litre XM diesels. Not the most straight-forward of installs. I'm off out in one in a bit so I'll report back.

Really though, I think you need to drive them all to see which you like best. HDis are nicer to drive than XUDTs, but XMs feel more special than Xantias. I certainly wouldn't run away from any of them. Savoy seems to have a pretty good rep.

Malcolm at Savoy garage is well known/respected on the French Car Forum/Club-Xm...

His cars are always well sorted unless otherwise stated ...

Though I haven't bought from him as yet,if I was in the market I wouldn't hesitate.

Xantia TD, take screwdriver and prod strut tops. If all well there its likely to be well elsewhere*

FSH isnt the be all and end all, being looked after is.  And when you are in shitter territory things like evidence of recent oil and timing belts mean more than a file full of KwikFit receipts for £9.99 oil changes and £24.99 ChingChong tyres

I had a 2.5TD XM just like that one from about 2006 - 2011. In all those years the only real problems were a couple of burst hydraulic pipes that needed a recovery truck home. The 2.5 can have hunger for radiators, though. They have two and the smaller one (if I'm remembering correctly) had to be replaced at least twice during my ownership.

The 2.1TD, by comparison, is a much simpler car and for the four years I've had one has been almost boringly reliable. They're all of an age now, though, so as well has poking around the strut tops I'd check the condition of the sills, especially at the back, and the rear subframe.

I've driven my garage's courtesy Xantias and while they're OK, I was always glad to get back into an XM at the end of the day.

Malcom at Savoy is spot on!

XM 2.5 has a pretty much unique engine and parts are running low ...

But they're all manual and all have va va voom!

XM or Xantia - XM would win every day!

I want to say Xantia, so we can start our own special 1997 Citroen Xantia Temptations from Weston-super-Mare club:

But as has been said, clutch is meant to be a bastard of a job (ask Vulgalour) and this suggests it might be an issue. Nothing but praise for Xantias from me though, it's the first car I've had in a long while that I just get in and drive without listening out for strange noises, checking fluids obsessively etc...

What I learnt by having a ride out in my mate's 2.5 is that the spheres on my XM must be absolutely shagged! So THAT'S what they're meant to ride like. Plenty of power though, and very smooth at speed. This one felt a bit iffy around town though. He has also had to replace radiators.

I don't know the first thing about Xantias but I am in Burnley if its of any use?

Im down the M65 and along a bit if that's any help too. Can turn up driving similar Chevronic chod and pointing knowledgeably with pipe stem...

Most reliable - TD xantia.

Most interesting - Xm

Compromise - hdi

Xantias - had three of em awesome cars - just check the ride if it goes along like oval wheels are fitted spheres are shagged,

XM's lordy , Lovely cars but when things happen they happen in a rather biblical way

Posted

but aren't we all here cos we are all a bit touched?

Ive nay been touched for ages but if thats a sideways offer I'll take it

Xantia TD is a good safe bet - I had a 97 one before for a few weeks; it managed to pass the NCT first time, n therefore the suspension test, with rock hard spheres; the load compensator self adjustment thing only worked 'occasionally'; you can test this by opening the rear hatch n sitting on the rear panel n it should depress, then courtesy the magic suspension should go up to its previous set height...

Look for either too much, or none at all LHM fluid levels - too much, n overfilled in the past it would have splurted out all its LHM fluid... too little n it will be well lazy to adjust up n down' -if at all...

These were, I was told assembled, in various different countries other than france, with various different turbos, I was told when I had mine, as I could not get a replacement turbo to intercooler pipe anywhere; even ordered one in from a Scottish scrapyard... I ended up getting the broken original pipe professionally plastic welded, n it held up; I still had the 3 other 'wrong' intercooler pipes till recently 9dumped them)...

All up they are very tight, comfortable cars, where you feel 'safe' n are well cocooned from the outside world n the stock stereo with steering wheel controls puts out a great sound....

I don't know much about Citreons but!

The guy at the garages comes recommended. Why not turn up with two cups of tea and a packet of custard creams and chat to Malcolm? He sounds a reasonable sort
