I can't tell from those photos what the bit that has broken looks like and where it should go.  Presumably its something to do with the two holes that have nothing in?

If only you knew someone who fiddles about making small one off components?

Posted

I can't believe that I have missed this thread.

This car is simply staggeringly beautiful (and sits in my dream garage between an RO80 and a Alpine Renault A110).

I have had a French Dinky toy of it since my Dad bought it for me in Dinard in 1970.

Yep, a PL17 distributor (lhd or rhd) is physically too large to fit under the bonnet. The rhd 24 dizzy is a much smaller item because space is so limited.

Power bulge in the bonnet for the distributor? :-D

Does the thing that holds the points in transfer from another distributor, if the whole internals won't fit?  Or if it's just a pin and a plate that shouldn't be too expensive to get made up.

Did you say that a distributor for RHD cars is different to LHD?

Can you get a side entry  cap? (ooo-er)  Would that provide enough clearance?

utter utter utter utter utter utter utter utter [young ones] utter utter utter utter [insert expletive here]

fabulous thing

would cum (arf) 300 miles just to perv at that

scale of 1 to 10 of how more crazy than citroen they were at that point in time.....?? :D

In answer to that question they were about 25% Citroen crazy by that time, since Citroen were owners of 25% of the company and by 1957 they had combined the dealerships of both businesses ;) Since the 24 came along 9 years after the DS and by 1965 Citroen were in complete control of ownership. Hence, in fact, the demise of the brand. Sales of the 2CV van were much greater in prospect and the manufacturing space at Irvy was given over to them instead. The Panhard name continued in their military vehicle range, since that part of the company was seperate to the car manufacturing side that Citroen had bought.

Is there some kind of obscure industrial flat-2 diesel you could fit instead? Petrols can get in the sea.

Jokes, I love these things, you are living the dream.

Le sigh.

So, we sourced a replacement distributor. Had it cleaned and rebuilt. Fitted last week -timing out by 180deg. After lots of headscratching, it transpires that somewhere down the line somebody has had this distributor apart and reattached the drive shaft thingy completely wrong.

Off again, dismantled and put together correctly, on again and no spark at the plugs. Lots more headscratching, the only component that hasn't been replaced is the cap. So, by process of elimination we need a new cap. Of course, they're unique to this funny 'short' dizzy and nobody seems to have one.

Bollocks

Bloody hell, I've had some fairly capricious cars but this Panhard truly redefines the word !

If it continues like this, I bet it won't be long until it gets raffled...

...in which case I'll end up buying all the raffle tickets !

It is really perverse to bother with a distributor at all on a flat twin, why not just use a double-ended  2Cv Citroen coil?

Posted

Not sure why I clicked 'like', this is clearly crap news.  But it's such a lovely* car, and that's a cool photograph.  Keep the faith.

*Lovely in a "Quite glad I don't own it" sort of way, mind you.

Could you use any of the BMW Boxer bits on this little cracker?

It's a beautiful car and I hope you get it running well soon.

^^WHS^^ (Mr Skizz)

We really need a "oooh bugger" button, or "wish i could add something constructive" button.

I'd have just pressed both of them.

Dunno how I missed this - maybe the stupid (sorry) thread title. Beautiful car. Can't ever remember seeing one in this country even when a lad in the 60s. Full marks for persevering to fix its various problems and thanks for sharing the stories with us.

... you need to find someone throwing away a 2CV engine and fit that to your Panhard?

Posted

Do you get a spark from the king lead? TELL US. Theres not a lot to a dizzy cap that you can't see, i.e. if it looks alright, it probably is. Obv if its cracked or the treminals have fallen off or the carbon doofus has vanished, maybe you do need a new cap.

Posted

Yeah there's a spark EVERYWHERE except the plugs. tbf I am not 100% convinced it is the cap, but after faffing for ages we chucked a load of electrical contact cleaner on the terminals on the cap, and managed to get a bit of a spark on the plugs for the first time for about 30 seconds. The leads are all brand new, have tried with other known good leads etc, so I don't reckon it's beyond the realms of possibility that the terminals are kippered, but yeah, not something I would have really considered had everything else not been gone through several times.

The biggest absurdity here is that we are gonna replace the whole engine/gearbox etc with a 60hp as soon as we can find one in budget so this is all essentially for nothing. But, ya know, better than going to the pub or meeting girls or whatever, isn't it?

Just had the tax reminder through the post for this fuggin' crock! That's a year of struggling to get it working with no reward.

Current thinking is thus: convert to wasted spark electronic ignition. Replace worn dizzy with the 'medium' size one (that will fit under bonnet if converted to leccy ignition) and then try again from scratch. And when (if) it starts working probably sell it asap.

404 is going on holiday next week to hopefully get totally sorted out, so all available money is dedicated to that for the time being. Then I think a concerted effort to get the Heron on the road, and let some time pass before touching the 24 again. Sigh.

That's such a shame, I can imagine the excitement when buying the car in the first place.  I suppose a year of faffing about getting not very far would get to you in the end.

I love the looks of this car so much, one of my all time favourites.  If you had a huge lounge you could put it there instead of a TV.

By the way the photo you posted 27/10 is wonderful.

Big news with a Panhard is completing the journey you started out on.

Full marks to you for owning this, I'm jealous as hell.

Posted

Well, you stop being jealous cos I no longer flippin' own it!

Basically, within the space of two says two people said they wanted it. We made a very rash decision and have swapped it for a fully functioning car plus cash our way. I've actually made money from this heap, which I never expected tbh

Anyway, I've been mega busy at work and won't haven't even driven the new car yet, but here us he final farewell, with the replacement lurking in the background...

I really must have a drive of a Panhard. Do you reckon any of them would work long enough for me to ever drive one?

Posted

Yes, I'd say they were pretty much totally reliable when looked after well (which the 24 had not been). I know at least two people who use PL17s as daily drivers. One of then doesn't own any other cars. They are fantastic, but easy to fuck up if you don't know what you're doing

Hey, is that the minty Dyna X that came from Martinique or somewhere ?

Posted

Yes exactly that one! Although it was only in Martinique til '56 before it went back to France. It's seriously nice though, totally original except the roof, which has been painted, and the motor, which is a 38bhp 851cc from a later X86. Original engine came with it though.
