Wow ! We DEMAND more pictures of that one !

The original engine would make a nice sitting room conversation piece, not much use for the road unless you're into drag racing 425cc 2CVs

That's the only pic I've got at the moment.Depending on how brave I'm feeling I might drive it to Paris on Tuesday though, so expect lots of photos next week (of it broken down in French laybys etc)

A shame about the 24, but I'm sure it's not the first or last time it'll be on a trailer.

Have you got the Panhard book by Bernhard Vermeylen?

Posted

In fairness it never got as bad as going on a trailer in my ownership, mainly because it never went far enough away from its garage.

I have been meaning to get that book for ages, I'll probably pick one up at Rétromobile next week if I don't spend all my money on other things (there's a new Charbonneaux book that looks brill)

Well, actually got a chance to drive it today. It's quite loud. And it jumps out of top gear, the wipers are useless and there is no heater. We fitted a fag lighter to power the satnav and did some cursory checks to fluids etc so it might be a Goer for Paris.

I shall wave from the train if we see you parked with the bonnet up on the hard shoulder of the motorway/down a French country lane.

Not much movement here. Picked up a few bits for it last week, including workshop manual, handbook, loads of brochures, a gear knob and the bit of missing trim from the front, plus a handbrake rubber grommet for the dash - France is excellent, doubt any of that would have happened if we'd been looking over here. Might actually drive it to the pub this week but it's a bit nippy to be driving a car with no heater at the moment

Man, that picture is far too much for me - a Panhard AND a Hotchkiss ! I must go lie down.

I took this home last night. I'm getting the hang of the tricky crash gearbox (you have to double declutch on the up and down changes, which is fun). It's a nightmare driving solo because you need to hold it in fourth, leaving one hand to do all steering, smoking, opening windows, indicating etc, you really need a buddy to hold it in gear for you. It's also terribly geared as it has the early gearbox which doesn't really transfer the power of the later engine, so 90kph is realistic top speed.

I'm sure there's an Autoshite fix of a bungee cord to hold it in top gear?

But you know that it shouldn't pop out when all is well, right?  Crash gearboxes are for real men, you can pretend to be Steve McQueen in Bullitt, double declutching on the way up and down.  But with 6 fewer cylinders.

Yeah I think it's just a cable needs adjusting, but long term (and I don't know how long this will even be staying) it wants a gearbox from an X86

Posted

In my experience of crash boxes, you can often get away with upchanges just by taking your time. Down is indeed, far trickier. Bloody satisfying when you get it right though.

Posted

Aye, most crash boxes are generous enough to allow a slow up change, but not this one because Panhard. The change is quite bizarre too, and the lever is a droopy little wand under the dash

My Tatra 613 had an odd change because it was their first attempt at a 5 speed gearbox, I think it was something like

1  3  5

R 2  4.   Perhaps they just had the photocopier on backwards?

so by comparison the column change on the 603 was perfectly straightforward.  We don't have that nowadays but perhaps with the advent of smart technology and touchscreens, car manufacturers can bring it back.  I think we've all seen Jeremy Clarkson reach across to the centre console and press "sport" or "race" mode where the dials all turn red, how about a "Panhard" function where the indicator stalk suddenly becomes the gearstick and you feel enormously superior to Citroen owners?

The Panhard has a heavy flywheel and so changes are understandably slow. The gearbox had no synchromesh on the lower gears in the early days, but wasn't this car on eBay, and had a later engine & box fitted, so no doubt, you've first got cable adjustment issues again. Biggest problem with Panhards is getting parts is hard in the UK, and knowledge scarce, so new owners end up reinventing the wheel, and making mistakes. However, there are knowledgeable souls around that understand the engines, others that know the gearboxes, so all isn't lost if you troll around on the net. :)

Good luck with the X86.

It definitely needs adjustment short term, but it's also an early gearbox - the engine was replaced but not the 'box.

I'm a mechanical dunce, but this our fourth Panhard so we're getting the hang of them now, and luckily the person who knows more than anyone else in the UK lives five minutes away from where the cars are stored. When he's got our Z back together he can go crazy adjusting the cables and whatnot. Unless we sell it first. Anyone wanna Panhard?

Without being rude, the UK has got a damn sight smaller overnight!  :)

All I say is good luck with this Panhard if he helped you with the 24C previously, as I read your tales of woe, and that wasn't knowledge.

Your particular car aka "The Louis XIV" is well liked in the Netherlands, and that's probably the true epicentre of expertise for this Dyna X range.

There's a nice one in Heemskerk, that's a daily driver, goes like the clappers and regularly does 1200 mile round trips to European events.

Mike

PS. I've got a Panhard Dyna K220 Break engine (not 851 cc) to strip & update in the next few months, but if I get stuck I know where to go. ;)

Well this is officially UP FOR SALE because my attention span is so small and something better has come along. I'm sure nobody here wants it, but it's always worth a go! £6000 ovno, will probably get you anywhere in the UK albeit slowly and noisily. Don't all rush at once...

I'm sure nobody here can afford it, but it's always worth a go!
