Westlake tyres

Has anyone had a pair of these? Need 2 tyres for back if Focus. Choice is 2 x Continentals with 4-5mm of tread of unknown provenance for £50 or a pair of these new for £80 fitted. Thoughts?

Before anyone says I'd use nothing less than a pair of Michelin Primacys... I'm on a limited budget...

Was considering the part worns but they are likely to be best part of 5-6 years old. The pair that are on it at the moment are absolutely shot. Whatever I do would be an improvement.

They must be of a reasonable standard though surely? It's not a 150 Bhp power house its a 2002 1.6 focus.

Falken, Federal, Kumho, Toyo are cheapish brands I would use ... Westlake I do not know and reviews are limited http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Westlake/

One reviewer says they were better than bald Avon tyres, but as I think Avon tyres are one of the worst handling out there that says nothing to me.

Bugger me westlake are the tyres on the meriva, you've just jogged my memory!

Perfectly fine, good wet grip and don't wear too fast. On a 1.6 meriva...

I've never managed to get it to loose traction and I do hammer it when I drive just because it needs it! Had them 3 years now

Might go for them give them a go. Either way the near limit ones I have on will be shit in the wet. If it was a 200hp BMW I'd be wary but on a normal family saloon they might be ok or will I be using Autoshite via a seance the next time it rains.

I've been told by guys "in the trade" that they're shit. Landsail are meant to be pretty good though.

I have a set of Westlake on my Honda CRV, 2.2 diesel, and they are a marked improvement over the Bridgestone that they replaced, and they were nearly half the cost. I was never happy with the Bridgestone and they wore very badly after less than 10k,

Just done 900 miles on the westlake over 2 days of driving, mostly rainy motorway in France, I'm sold on them TBH, grip very well, not noticed difference in braking, and even giving it the heinz it keeps traction.  I'll be ordering a set for the back in the next few weeks.

Go and fish something out of the local skip instead. Landsail, Nexen or GT Radial Champiros would be my ting if I was brassicus.

The general rule of budget tyres I've found is that they're acceptable in the dry, wheelspinny/not confidence inspiring in the wet/cold/damp, even with 1/1.2/1.4 litres. I've never actually had any real traction issues with budgets, it just feels like you're about to crash. I've had good results with Toyos and the Uniroyal Rain Experts I have on now are pretty good and were cheap, though I can make those 58 horses OMG WHEELSPIN at the drop of a hat. I reckon the Toyos were better though.

GT Radial Champiros

I have a full complement of these on the Swift and I've got no major complaints about them, dry grip is good and wet grip is eh... Okay but not terrifying. Weren't too expensive, just over 150 quid for a set of four. In future I think I'll be tempted to just go for something that's good all round and to hell with the price, it's not like it's a frequent expense and good tyres can make all the difference.

Just found out that their Chinese though which I'm not all that hyped about.

I put a pair on our modern...... BIG mistake. Took them off after a few weeks.

I'd buy branded part-worns  rather than those, given the choice again.

Westlake refers to where you end up

And the direction you slide in, if steering East, away from a lake, in the wet.

Had a further look can get a pair of Barums for another £20. Had these loads so probably better off with these I guess.
