Trigs "Car in front" - Bonnet repairs!

Holts cans were ace, think halfords might still do their mixup paint in it,they had a fan nozzle like on a spray gun

I think a bonnet is about the worse thing you can paint with aerosol can on a car, especially a metallic as well, Side panels are more forgiving as they are lower down and have shadows but the bonnet is the main thing you can see.

Really i should have spent another £13 on a can of paint but it takes a good 20 minutes for my local motor factors to make a can up so i always feel guilty asking them.

I've used Halfords mixed paint before and had loads of problems, the nozzles keep spitting and dribbling everywhere.

I think I'm just a bit annoyed with myself as I'm normally better than that at painting, at least the repair came out well and the bare metal is covered, after a flat down and mop it should also look nicer.

I did exactly the same on the roof of my rover but made the further mistake of letting the paint dry then trying to continue painting it.

The thing is you can always put more paint on - and it could use another coat or two.

It's a good result from rattle cans though, I think I would have been tempted to have borrowed an electric sprayer from a hire shop for a large panel like that. And if I had any paint left over I would have also resprayed my bike, garage door, neighbours windows, cat, washing on the line............

Amazing repair though, very pleased to see this starlet come back as most folk would have cubed it after that little shunt. A testament to your perseverance Trig!

I think it looks great tbh, especially with black being unforgiving anyway. Trig are you self taught? I seem to remember you did a great job on a golf cabrio and some random neighbour's car back along.

I forgot about the neighbours Audi, that came out well too. When I first left school I spent 4 years at a small body shop based in a old farm building and spent 1 day a week at college but that was nearly 15 years ago now (depressingly) so I'm not up to scratch any more.

Some cans don't spray at that angle, you could take the bonnet off and stand it up on a raised surface so you are standing facing it.

I got a rep at my workshop who had been a bee bee employee, think it was called suffolk refinish or similar and they were doing mixed cans like bee bee used to sell

Following on from my spray job disaster i thought I'd try and recover from what mess i made today.

I spent a hour or so flatting it back with some wet & dry before going hammer and tongs with the polishing mop and a good hand job, even I'm impressed with how well it's come up, ok so it's still a bit streaky but it's not as obvious as it was, especially now the sticker and badge has been fitted.

In 2 months you'll be parked next to a polo and your local supermarket and it'll have that effect on the bonnet. You'll have started a scene init.

Kazakhstan chips away,

trig I know where your coming from we are our own worst critics, i look at things that don't quite go how I perceive as right as a learning curve, that doesn't look bad at all, black is an absolute bastard for showing everything up

revisiting this thread is getting me emotional about my old starlet. how is ownership going for you?

It's going well thanks, Touch wood it's been completely reliable other than needing a new windscreen for the mot (due to a stone chip) and a couple of new tyres.

Mrs T loves it as it's easy to drive and easy to park at her work and it's quite quick but TBH i might end up selling it later in the year as she's having a baby and it won't be big enough and i don't know if really want it for work as i prefer bigger cars, especially as I've got this Sierra that's costing me a bomb.

Thats like saying "fancy a wife swap for the night?" when your married to Scarlett Johansson and the swap being offered is Caitlyn Jenner.

I object most strongly to that - Sally Gunnell if you please  - may not look pretty but shifts quickly.
