Dug this amazing photo out whilst composing a thread for RR! 1980 in Ossett, just down the road from me.

Check out the Violet on the far right and a collection of MK3 Cortinas on the left, nearly three in a row! One lucky learner driver has a blue Marina in the middle and I think that's a late Avenger Estate further up! Anyone fancy an ice cream?

Posted

Fan-bloody-tastic. Liking the Avenger with the boot rack and that Datsun 160J Violet is teh sex. Makes you realise how popular Cortinas were too. For a 1980 images, there seems to be a refreshing lack of newer cars - I guess car-credit companies where still a novelty in those days.

Posted

Fabulous!(Can't spot the blue learner Marina - do you mean the HC Viva? )Seems to be a festival of blue. Also nice to see some small J-tin in there, Datsun 100A and a lovely green/brown Toyota 1000, plus the Vile-ert, which at first glance I took to be a 'parklife'-spec Granada Koop.Probably some stuff not all that old - Maxi's & Mini's & Volvo's are hard to date... but the grubby blue transit couldn't have been that old.

Posted

Man, how cool is that! Is doin my head in - wanna know if that HC Viva is actaually my old one - very close to where it originated, and it could be!Lovely sliding door CF there as well - bet you could even get parts for them back then!

Posted

On closer inspection it is a Viva, knew something didn't sit right. Oops!I think the thing that impresses me is the near absence of prestige cars, there's a badly-parked Mercedes outside "Carousel" (probably owned by the landlord) and what seems to be a white Rover P6 in the middle lot. Then again it is only Seemore Arcade, hardly shopping of choice for the jet-set.Pictures like this make me want to pick up a nice camera and take photos of car parks in Wakefield for future posterity.

Posted

I don't know.... there's another P6 lurking behind some undergrowth and FOUR 140/240 series Volvo's, that darling of restrained 70's middle classness, plus a granada wagon, so maybe there's some coin floating about....

wow, vw derby, bay window T2, bedford CF, issit a Rennie 16 at the back of the que at the junction, very cool photo 8)

Posted

These bedford CF's are ace arent they, Fatha_bol used to have one with a slidey drivers door and hinged passenger door! You'd think that would be dangerous, but he never fell out wwhen driving so can't be that bad. GR8 4 SELLIN MEAT 2 FEN FOLK. 2.3 petrol with a wanky zenith carb, used to do a 4-5 hour stop-start butchers round with it 5 days a week, imagine how much fossil fuel that must have used!!! OMG WONT SOMEONE THINK OF THE RAINFORESTS! Also used to have loads of packets of Paxo stuffing and Atora suet wedged in the dashboard shelf, plus a fat wad of 'EL Rose + Sons christmas club' tokens. Scrapped it in about 1990, ah well.

yeah my ol' man had one too, doors on side and rear were so bad they wouldnt open, which wasnt a problem tis it blew up and little me had to jump over the engine to get out, scary

A CF you flash bastard? We could only afford a Sherpa butchers wagon, trouble was my old man wasn't a butcher and that smell never did come out  For bonus shite points it had a 55mph max GPO lump with floor mounted cut off

Lovely green Fiat van too - nice pic! He has this too:

Dewhurst Butchers - I always thought they were a local thing, obviously not. I bet carousel was worth a bimble round.

Eh? Manufactured 1983, registered 1989?! They must have had that sat around a while, maybe it was the dealer who colourcoded the grille to get it shifted. Weird.

Check out the Eurocar place in the background! Laserline and Sigma, bet they had all sorts of wacky equalizers in there. Reckon this is from the early 90s.

Would have been an F-plater in that case - musta been imported from elsewhere. :)

That's Stanzas for you, so well-loved that they need to import extra ones.

Great pics Big H.

I can't spot a single example of french tat in the top pic. Quite unusual.

Also - hows about this - I reckon that's an original Audi 100 side on in the background. Blue, with the chrome wheel arch embelishers.

There is I'm sure a Renault 16 behind a Escort mk2, Cortina mk4?, and a Maxi? on the road waiting at the junction.

Looks at all the colours! In any modern car park it's a festival of silvers, greys and blacks... Cars have no colour anymore :(

Looks like a Harvest gold colour Wolsely 6 before the brown Avenger (going anti-clockwise). Hard to say what's next to the yellow Mini....a dark blue Cortina?? Hard to say what the small orange hatch is...MkI Fiesta? MkI 323? The other side of the brown Avenger is a green Viva HB. Next to the orange Merc is that Toyota 1000 that's been mentioned. The other side of the dark coloured Volvo 244 appears to be an orange VW Derby, although the MkI Audi 80 B1 bears a strong resemblance although it would be a bit bigger. Then right at the end beyond all the MkIII Cortinas & the Maxi is a Datsun 100A E10 Cherry like AJCherry's one.I'm intrigued as to what is between the white Bedford CF & the green Fiat 900 van...appears to be very low slung & purposeful looking whatever it is!I think I'll take the orange Datsun 160J coupe with the brown vinyl roof! 8)

Transit - Cortina - Mini - ? - Fiesta Mk1 - Wolseley 1800 - Avenger - HB Viva - Allegro - Merc - Toyota 1000 - Volvo - VW Derby.

White estate with the boot open by the market looks like a CX Safari..

-Granny alright! my miztayke It's pretty interesting how loyal car buyers in the 70s-80s were to home made tin. Owning a CX back then would have been a statement - don't think it works now
