Moderns: What Would You Have?

The current Ashtray, mk 64 or whatever it is isn't bad looking on the outside, still wouldn't though.

I like my shite cars and am wedded to them.

The first time I read that as "welded to them"

Interesting thread guys, I stuck up to 125200€, 3 years old or less into the main ad site here (in Croatia, where cars have a higher initial price tag and devalue far slower) and I got a range of Tiny Joke Cars that I wouldn't feel safe in. Oh, and the ubiquitous totalled Bimmers.

If I had to HAD to, spend £10k on the nose on a car less than three years old, with a view to keeping it forever, I'd probably run away screaming, incapable of processing the very idea of it.

And then, if somebody pulled a gun on me, I'd buy an 11 plate Mercedes A180 Elegance, petrol, manual, with parktronic. The old A class came veeery close to being an interesting small car.

Looking at this in reality.

10 years ago a had £6000 to spend on a car for all round use and got a 3 and a bit year old Volvo V40 with 60,000 miles on the clock that did me very well.

So if I didn't get to keep the change I would buy another Volvo, probably a sub 20,000 mile V40 with the 2.0 petrol and nice interior.

Though this Octavia is very tempting http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201412109553990/sort/pricedesc/postcode/b169hu/page/1/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/usedcars/price-to/10000/radius/1500/fuel-type/petrol/transmission/manual/maximum-age/up_to_3_years_old/make/skoda/model/octavia?logcode=p

If I did get to keep the change then for under £2500 I can get a 100,000 mile Honda Civic http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201411068786554/sort/priceasc/usedcars/maximum-age/up_to_3_years_old/postcode/b169hu/price-to/10000/transmission/manual/price-from/2000/radius/1500/page/1/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew?logcode=p and blow the rest on old chod.

As it is, in the real world I have spent £24,000 on a Skoda Octavia vrs Mk3 (petrol, manual, hatchback) and after having done 12,000 miles in 9 months it is excellent. I intend to keep it till it dies of old age.

I have just actually checked whether a Yeti could be had for £10,000 and under 3 years and it can. In my search I discovered they do a 1.2 petrol. WTF, the thing is not exactly small is it?

What's the fad with either very small petrol or diesel choices these days then? It's like going back to the days of the 1300 MK3 cortina and the 1300 capri where you had the look but hoped no-one challenged you off the lights. I know efficiency is better now but they are also a lot more lardy. No wonder diesel is so 'popular' if the petrol choice would struggle to get it off a sloping drive. Backwards step imo.

It's FWD though. 105ps, 0-62 in 11.something seconds, 110mph, 46mpg.

Thinking about it though, in the early days of motoring engine sizes were 5, 6, 7 litres or more, mainly because they didn't know how to/weren't interested in making them efficient, plus it was all massive because the materials weren't up to much. Then things gradually got smaller/more efficient/better made, this is just taking things further.

But you just know it's going to need to be thrashed to death to get it to go anywhere, real life fuel consumption's not going to be anywhere near claimed figures and they're going to be knackered by the time they get to 100k miles.

Size-wise, even compared to the revolting Rav they're small, more like a Niva - a small hatchback on stilts.

Anyway, what is it with these front-wheel drive 4x4s? What is the point of them? Surely, if anything warrants the 1.3 Capri "all of the show, none of the go" label it's them. May as well buy a small mpv and have done, ffs.

They are popular with giffers because they are easier to get into.

A Suzuki Swift Sport. They seem to be the only car in the price range that has everything going for it and has heaps of praise from the motoring journo types. The only down side really is the lack of space in the car.

Mmmm, shiny

Btw what is that sticker over the speedo? Does it say "we can't guarantee the mileage" perchance? I.e. it was 250,000 but we clocked it and this is our get-out in case anyone notices...

I would, new as well. Because it means one less VW customer, one less believer of VW's backhander fuelled good press when the cars are no better than anything else. I think the Astra is better looking as well.

After owing my diesel vectra I would sooner have a pineapple violently inserted into my rectum than have another vauxhall.

The current focus is miles better than the astra to drive and looks sharper too - astra looks like it's been parked too close to the hearth and started to go soft.

TBH the thought of lashing out ten large on wheels that will haemorrhage money like tesco fills me with dread - I would rather spend it on home improvements or a once in a lifetime jolly.

My recent Vocksal experiences have been most positive. Don't like the Focus. Having to look at that ridiculous dash on a daily basis would piss me RIGHT off.

But you're right. Buying anything for a five figure sum that will be worth a three figure sum in six years is the work of a moron. Sadly there are lots of morons.

Are people actually reading the fecking parameters with this thread?

3 yrs/£10k with a reasonable mileage (say 30k) gets you A PIECE OF SHIT.

All this talk of Skoda Superbs, haha pull the other one. put those parameters in Autotrader nationally and you will find 2 cars. The only manufacturers listed in volume ('000s) are Citroen/Peugeot, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota etc, hardly the stuff of fantasy. Even stuff like Alfs are those hairdryer citybutton Mitos which are HORRIBLE to drive.

If I ever got a job with a company car and those were the limits it would feel like a punishment.

As I said, the <£10k Superb Mk2 is a while off yet. However, I've known a miley 58 plate L&K DSG one that went for £8.5k but it was on 220k and a taxi.

Next year they'll start to drop as they get too old to be cabs in some areas.

If you know where to look you can get 50k mile 2 year old ones for £13k.

A Suzuki Swift Sport, like The Trigger suggested earlier.

I think it is probably the closest one can get to an 80's hot hatch experience (eg, 205 GTi, Golf GTi) that can be found.

I should qualify this statement by providing facts to support it, coming over all Thomas Gradgrind, there for a moment.

It is very nippy and likes to be revved.

It's interior plastic is of quite a poorish kwality.

It's seat cloth is of red and black hues.

It's white.

It makes a nice noise.

It goes round bends very goodly.

They're all in the North East being driven like dodgems with the name of a leasing company on the registration plate.

Anything Nissan make in Sunderland tends to figure in the sales top ten these days - they let the staff there lease them for sod all on short leases and a few months later take them back and put them into their approved used scheme. Say they have 5 thousand staff who take them up on this and they then have maybe 8 or 10 thousand "sales" racked up in a calendar year to add to genuine sales figures.

No doubt a lot of other makers do this too.

Damn. They seemed to stop importing Citroen C6s 4 years ago.

Yes, but 98% are still in the showrooms, the other 2% belong to the French Embassy.
