FRIDAY 20 MARCH 2015

More of the same today...

Slow progress today because the car kept setting on fire, also I was sat in the boot on the petrol tank smelling petrol.

Two fingers up to death today.

A nice drop of body colour in due course will show off the poverty spec lack of trim!

Looking forward to the cosmetic stuff in the summer, all the hard work this past few months is practically invisible.

Just thinking, this was the rustiest car I own!

Have to get the Dacia done this year, not much in the way of cosmetic bodywork needed so I am looking forward to it

I'm amazed that you were able to get panels for the Alpine. If there are any that you can't get here's a wild suggestion. As the Moskvitch 2141 is a copy of the Alpine maybe you could use some of these panels, at least in the hidden areas.

Managed to persuade Sam, busy as everyone was to have a quick drive up and down the road in this. Got to seize these opportunities :)

At the NEC last Nov we were finally able to debunk the myth that the Aleko was built using old Chrysler/Talbot tooling - by parking the above car along side an Alpine on the Simca Club stand.

Although the cars look very similar, even down to the wheel design, when parked side by side it's clear that it's just a copy, albeit a clever one!

There's actually nothing, not even a trim clip that interchanges!

The 'Czech Connection' has been really beneficial to Alpine owners in the UK.

Over there some 250 Chrysler 180 and 2L are still on the road, compared with perhaps 10 here, but not many Alpines, so in recent years there has been a massive parts swap, with a large amount of 180 stuff heading east, and Alpine parts coming back.

So, apart from genuine front wings, it's probably easier to restore the body of an Alpine here than a late Cortina!

I saw that at the stand, loved it and spoke to a really nice chap who told me lots about it.

Some distortion in the panel. Gonna leave like this for the MOT tomorrow and might tidy up with some filler, or might just grind the welds down and paint. We'll see.

SATURDAY 21 MARCH CONTINUED...

003 Nearside rear (inner wheel arch in boot) Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded

I was lucky with this side, the top of the wheel arch tub was sound

Wasn't happy with how this side was welding, its like welder shifted somehow. Gave the area a better clean up and adjusted the wire speed and gas, helped a bit but still wasn't as smooth as the first side.

Did the job though.

That's it finished. MOT Monday.

Then will clean up and seal and paint it.

Just realised I put the distortion in the panel with my hands pulling in the bottom of the plate to meet the bend in arch, as I did same on this side

Great work, enjoying reading the progress of this. All the best for todays mot.

Brilliant stuff, I am delighted to see this car being saved.

Good luck with the MOT, keep us posted.

Proper rating your efforts Mr SambaS, 490 Hundred/10

I'm keeping 'em crossed that you'll be rewarded with an MOT for all your sterling graft.

I do like to see a good bit of welding. I don't know why but I really enjoy seeing a newly welded in patch.

Have enjoyed the work this far, my MOT man is retiring at the end of the month so really busy. Cant fit in till at least Thursday

Good luck with the Mot and well done for getting stuck in with the welding an saving the Alpine I'm sure that if you hadn't brought it the future for it might have not been a long one.

Got a friend helping me to weld up are Fiorino Van at the moment an watching him at work is something I find amazing at how easy he makes it seam!

Well done on the Mot just need some pictures of the bad boy cruising the streets again now. :-)

Not me on the motorway. Sounds like you've bought a dog and nicely talked yourself into a dose of dangerous driving! Faulty brakes, prior knowledge...naughty naughty. I'd have left well alone.......

Every time I read this, it's always in Quinton Wilson's voice. Does anyone else get that?

I'd say that Brummie character who Harry Enfield played years ago ("I'm considerably richer than yow!") would be a good fit. Sounds like the sort of prat who'd buy a new Fiat 500 on finance because "it's a safe car..."

Big congrats on your MOT pass and showing the doubters that it can be done. Looking forward to see what's next for this one and your long-term stored Alpine.

I think we know enough about Benjy to know that he's not into buying new 'lifestyle' motors on finance, he is a hardcore shiter!
