Old Ipswich street scenes

I must admit, I've become slightly obsessed with this Flickr photostream, basically it's a ton of scans of old slides taken around my home town over the last 40 or so years and it gives a great insight of cars normal people had back then.

I thought I'd share a load as they are of such good quality, if you click on them they get much bigger too.

How cheerfully non-grey everything was back then!

People came up with cool stuff when fags and booze were still allowed in offices.

Amazing, isn't it?  When we were kids we used to count blue cars, red cars, white cars and yellow cars on the motorway to see who could get to 20 first.  Now, if you don't pick silver, black or grey you'll be at Membury before you get past two.

Gorgeous aren't they but they are in the posh part of town around Christchurch park, They must easily be getting on for a mIllion now.

That first pic blew me away Trig. So much colour. Beer and Fag billboards. BMC LD, Reliant Regal and Fiat 850 saloon. Brilliant.

Clio and Allegro in the same parking line up. Volvo 440 and MK3 Cortina at the tip. Old Generation with the new generation. This is something you only notice in old pictures, you don't really pay much attention or notice it in day to day life. That's what I reckon anyway.  I love old photos... 8) 8)

Pedant mode though - Pic 1 can't be 1966 as the Fiat is on an F plate. Earliest it can be is August 67. You're nearly 8 months out man... :-P :-P

These are amazing.  The streets are busy and clean with loads of different businesses . Note how few road signs and "street furniture" there is cluttering up the street. The colours are luscious...

You've been putting ALL of these through the vehicle check thing?  That's mad - but excellent.

I don't think I've ever seen a Colt like this.

It's a pre-facelift A70 Lancer.  I think 70s Mitsubishis were rather pretty:  the Celeste coupe, which was based on the Lancer, was certainly a bit of alright.

(The garage just at the bottom of the hill from us was a Colt main dealer in the 70s.  Norman Hopkins Motors, long since given up the ghost.  Still a petrol station though - now Texaco, used to be Gulf back then.)

Posted

Some great photos Trig. The colour on that first one is incredible.

The Ferrari disappearing out of shot in one of them would have been a rare sight.  Back when they weren't ten a penny and driven by every wannabe celeb.

These are ace. Especially the Ferodo bridge shot with the Class 31 and the Ford Thames.

By the pre-TOPS locomotive number I guess that photo was late '60s. Whersted road has changed enormously in the last 20 years ago, though. I always used to take that road into town from Manningtree, and the terraces along there would often be dwarfed by the funnels of something from DFDS.
