...Aldi A6 2.5TDi automatics with the tiptronic box, please? I'm sure I recall they shit their fuel pumps and they have to be rebuilt, but any other known problems, please?

I've just been offered a deal with one and obviously I wouldn't be keeping it, but I'd need it not stick a leg out of bed in my (short) ownership and any idea of the value of a low mileage 2002 one would be appreciated.

Theres some ropey valve/sensor in the gearbox that means it wont go into reverse sometimes. It also makes the ecu go funny so you get shite mpg.

My mates got one with the issue and it was a 600 quid fix.

Are you sure it's Tiptronic not Multi-chronic. Fatha N has got an A4 2.5V6 Tdi on an 02 and that's an elastic band job. His feels as if it's about to break ,but he's had it for about 5 years and it's always felt like that.

I thought only Quattros were Tiptronic,but they might be just later ones.

Apart from shit gearbox his is quite fast and normally shows about 45 mpg on the trip,I think they suffer from the usual VAG ( most Germans in fact) trick of drowning their ECUs by bulkhead water ingress, but to be fair the old fella's one is probably the most reliable car he's owned over the past few years .

My serial Audi-owning mate has owned a fuckton of these. In addition to what Cort says, highlights include

 

• Water gets in round the pollen filter casing (TADT,S)
• Tailgate wiring U/S
• Horn sticks ON
• Parking sensors a bit shit
• Sticky lecky windows
• Iffy engine electrics, esp relays (the Skoda Shitavia fitted with this engine does the same sort of things)
• Leaky PAS
• knocks out suspension bushes
• The legendary Audi ABS faults that no-one has a clue about. Get used to a pulsing pedal.
• VAG SHITE.

If it's an estate sorry.. AVANT then you'll always find a buyer for one they're pretty popular. I'd be most wary of the gearbox and drowned ECU the rest is just normal VAG SHITE you can pass on to the new owner as "they all do that, sir"

I'd be wary of any VAG auto. I do like some VAG stuff, but the reason I bought the Merc is because I've heard too many bad things about auto Audis.

It's the saloon, which I'd imagine knocks the value on the head a bit. Probably their only selling* point is the badge, because some daft bastards will assume invincibility or something.

If you're wondering how likely a car is to shit itself check for the number on eBay for spares or repairs. I reckon you'll find a few with gearbox issues.
