P4 West: Saab Museum Saved!

January 24, 2012 in News

Saab 9-3 SS Racing edition is Saab Car Museum driven by Peter "Poker" Wallenberg, part in saving the museum now. Photo by Jörgen Trued

P4 West reports: The city of Trollhättan, SAAB AB and The Wallenberg foundations – those are the ones who make sure that the Saab Museum will stay in Trollhättan. Together they have paid 28 million SEK for the whole collection.

A lot has happened since Saab filed for bankruptcy in december. Two bankruptcy administrators were appointed and later on a third joined in.

They quickly realized that more money was needed to keep the bankruptcy proceedings alive and quickly it was established that the Saab Cars Museum could bring in the first millions.

And now it’s a done deal, the museum will remain in Trollhättan. The running costs of the museum, will be handled by the city of Trollhättan and Västragötalandsregionen (regional government). P4 West have previous reported that the region, the city and a collection of Saab-veterans wanted to take over the running of the museum.

Brilliant.  Looks great that.  I'm off to plan next year's summer holiday to Sweden...

Great pictures. I always love to see cars of the SAAB museum and have promised myself that one day I will go there.

I'd love to have a look around the cars they've got out the back. The ones that are in need or work, spares cars, unfinished etc etc.

It was so disappointing when they advertised the museum cars up for sale and was such a relief when the news was broadcasted on the SAAB forums that they weren't going to be sold off after all.

I know that SAAB would probably have gone through years before if GM hadn't stepped in, but I still believe that GM raped them of all their technology and knowledge, then just left them with minimal money to slowly die off. Such a shame.

The pictures of the early Saabs clearly show the aeroplane design from which Saabs evolved. The 92 & the 93 are both so smooth in their design their wind resistance must have been comparable to modern cars. The early Saabs were 2 stroke ones and I never understood why the company went down the 2 stroke road before changing to 4 stroke in the early 1970s!

Basically, so the story goes, is that they built the first shell and wanted to motorise it to see if it was any good. A quick trip down the local scrappy saw an old DKW bought for its engine and gearbox. After fitting it and blaring around for a bit, they thought it was pretty good so did a deal to licence the engine fro DKW and the rest is history.

Apparently the roof on the first prototype was hand formed by one bloke using wooden mallets, resting the panel on manure filled bags!

They liked the simplicity of the 2-stroke and the minimal moving parts (7 in total I believe).

The main reason they went to a 4-stroke (the Ford V4) was because of pressure to meet emissions in various countries. Before that, they were thinking of producing a 2-stroke of larger capacity.

V4 Deluxe, that'll be around 1969 model. The early 99's are lovely. I must make a start on mine(sometime  ). Mine's a 2dr though.

I really like the Saab Safari. Didn't know it even existed until today :)

Posted

I didn't realise SAAB made such attractive sporty models. Very nice.

Shame most of their production stuff was designed by a slug fetishist.

Good stuff Bongo!!! I would like one of those Saabaru's. Utterly pointless and half-arsed -> very high want level.

EMSs have the best wheels, period.

Nice V4, looks in decent condition. Good to hear it gets used in all weathers too.

I like the 'Soccerball' alloys, but I appreciate they aren't to everyones taste. Very 70's wheel.

The EMS is a rare car now, much rarer than a 99 Turbo and I'm so lucky to have 2 of them.

I always loved Saab for their individual designs and not following the trends, until fairly recently that is.

I agree. Newer Saabs are just re-badged Voxalls.

I'm not saying they aren't any good, they just aren't the same as they used to be. Some will say that's a good thing, but I disagree.

My 1970 99 2dr

Bought with no engine and box, interior, bumpers, lights, etc.

It will have a 16 valve engine and 5 speed box from a Classic 900 fitted one day. Going to do the Silver 99 EMS first though.

Thinking back on the collection pictures, that last 96 can't have been delivered by Carlson. The roof isn't dented...

I'll get me coat.

Because Saab were still trying to build a well built car and not just knocking out often boring rubbish.
