r.welfare Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Must admit that this proliferation of ANPR means that I wouldn't buy another car that isn't taxed already and drive it home again...in the past I've DayInsured them and driven them back on the back roads, keeping an eye out for Plod - they have all been MOT'd though.
Guest Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 She's always a cow, but I reckon the reason she's so desperate to have me booked at the moment is because the equally social climbing son who lives next door to her is trying to flog his house, and they probably think my autoshite will put off buyers I live in an area filled with exactly these sorts of snooty old biddies and middle-class curtain rustlers. I expect there are a lot of harsh words behind my back for not only having a fleet of grot, but leaving a 1 metre wide oily patch on the road where the Galant was parked for months: The best thing ever was a while back, further up the street some particularly snooty cow, some kind of moneyed-up divorcee or something, who was in her immaculate front garden tending to something. Just then, I came round the corner in the Galant, driving it to my house for the first time after I'd retrieved it initially. At the time it was filthy and unpolished, but I don't think that would have mattered to her. She looked genuinely offended and shot me a look that could only be described as fury, then went back inside, presumably to call the residents association or something.
Mike D Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I too seem to have a snooty old biddy living across the road from me, so far i've been graced with a 'giffer-scrawled' postcard, asking me to move the Tredia cos it was parked across the road for a day 'spoiling the view' while the readymix wagon did my drive, and another verbal wittering that I was 'revving' my 1200 in the drive one morning before the RR show. Fuggin hell old woman, you're about 90, surely you remember manual chokes? They'll pop their clogs soon enough, miserable old bastards
Guest Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 How on earth could a Tredia spoil any view? I'll bring the Stanza around, that should raise her blood pressure enough that she won't be a problem anymore.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 They'll pop their clogs soon enough, miserable old bastardsLOLZ! Thats the spirit!'NO I HAVENT PAID MY TAX - SO NO WINTER HEATING ALLOWANCE FOR YOU THIS YEAR, HO HO HO!'

Threads like this make think that a) I'm glad I live in the sticks and use rural roads, mostly lanes and B's, and that neighbours aren't too much of an issue. That being said, I still need to be mindful of the dogwalkers/horseriders who go down our track, I'd imagine if I took too many liberties with scrap on the driveway someone would be complaining.
mk2_craig Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Are reminders now sent to owners that their MOT is due, like for road tax? I (unintentionally) let my Mondeo run out of test the year I bought it and quite by chance came across the expired certificate three months later, otherwise it would have been tax renewal time before I discovered. Although I think the MOT I then had done on it would have been the first new-style certificate the car was issued with.
TheScrapman Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Maybe they just don't have as many ANPR camera cars round here as they do down south. They are outside work twice a week at the moment Wuvvum. They sit on the Norwich outer ring road between Unthank and Earlham roads. Proper organised affair with white Renault ANPR van, 4 or more motorbikes and a tow truck. They pull them over right outside the office window.I've looked up all the number plates of cars they've pulled so far, and they are all missing from the MID database! There is a bus stop right by where they are pulled, and more often than not, the tow truck takes the car and they take the bus.Well, it breaks the monotony of work...
nigel bickle Posted December 1, 2008 Author Posted December 1, 2008 Well -thought I'd use the 'lil car again today -seeing as the tank of fuel in it will only go to the new owner.Arundel to Worthing -what 8 miles?Yep you've guessed it. Tug on the return trip by boys in blue. I did update Insurers database -guess it hasnt registered yet. Same as before -quick docs & on your way. Very polite- prob cos I'm middle aged & in a tailored suit. 18 & jeans -perhaps a different attitude?I'm in Southampton & Portsmouth tomorrow -might take it again to see how often I get stopped. I'm beginning to enjoy the ''challenge'' -in a perverse way.It is kinda proving my original assertion -its now impossible to drive an uninsured car, despite official assertions that there are a squillion scroats out there.Just add 'Act Only' insurance to the fuel levy - problem solved...
Spottedlaurel Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I've looked up all the number plates of cars they've pulled so far, and they are all missing from the MID database!Out of curiosity, any pattern to the kind of cars that get stopped? I’d mostly imagine ‘90s dross, but maybe some newer surprises or people who look like they should know better?

Maltelec Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 You want to park one of these outside: Including the 5.9 litre diesel engine. That'll shake her false teeth out every time it starts up.
mk1_4dr Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Im not convinced that my front plate would get picked up by ANPR, nevermind eh? D
Milford Cubicle Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 I had a look at the ANPR screen in an Asda filling station while I was paying for my petrol and it misread the plates on this, mistaking the 'M' for a 'K' and the '7's for '1's.
Father Ted Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Now correct me if I am wrong, indeed feel free to flame me alive like what they do on the VxON site for asking a question that because I cant pay the £15 membership fee due to some internal reshuffle meaning they have closed their new members link, means that the search function doesn't work for me of and having eleventy million forums and sub fora means a complex time trying to find what you want anyway, or indeed if you post in the wrong bit due to not being allowed to post where you want to (due to weird and wonderful post count limits) that makes you public enemy No 1..... But I always kind of assumed that if you were stopped by VOSA or indeed plod for not being taxed, so long as you made the effort to tax the car then you could get away with it. After all I cant use the on line method if the car is not in my name ( did this once and the tax disc went to the last owner who promptly cashed it in and caused all sorts of problems - bastard) And if its Sunday you cant go to the GPO as they wont be open - so for that reason I carry the docs, insurance, MOT and my cheque book and drive it home on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon.

Astras, Mondeos, oh, a Jag - 51plate was the newest, but he drove off after a while. Lowered Rover 220 coupe on tasteful 17's was reasonably interesting and ended up on the tow-truck. Poor thing, sat there all shiny, unaware of it's impending doom

Father Ted Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 We've got a Post Office round here in an Asda that's open on Sundays until about 2.00pm Ah, but do they tax cars? Our local one in the Spar is open Sunday (for December anyway), but try getting them to do anything other than sell you a stamp.... You would think there was a law against it or something.
Guest Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Yeah the post office I go to for anything but car tax (they don't do it) close their counters at a certain time, but the newsagent part remains open for the day. I don't think you can get car tax at all on Sundays anywhere, can you?

Cavcraft Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Main Post Office in 'my' city centre open most of Saturday I believe. They're useless wankers though because I always taxed cars that weren't in my name for whoever was buying them and even had the 'official' nod from DVLA and a contact name.Post Office junior Hitler of the year refuses to tax for me, manager gets called he refuses too. Says they never tax cars unless your name on V5 or new keeper's bit yet when I pointed out he personally had taxed one for me two weeks ago and I could prove it he still argued then just pissed off somewhere.Incidentally...the van mounted/more police waiting up the road style of ANPR vans are usually wheeled out about four or five days into a new month as more chance of catching untaxed vehicles apparantly.*Ted, pm'd you (again) on that website. I wouldn't take it personally, there's one or two, erm, 'characters' on there.
