Porsche 944 out, Rover Commerce in? Suggestions Welcome

Mikeknight is looking to sell his Porsche 944, formerly owned by BobtheBeard.  It's not that it fails to work as a car, it's just ill suited to what he needs from a car.  The Xantia is also ill suited, it's far too big.

So he's on the lookout for a replacement.  Top of the list is a Rover 25 Commerce with the K series lump in it.  Mike likes the K series, rates it as an engine and really likes the 25.  I'm thinking a regular 25 with the rear seats removed and the rear windows painted out would do the same job and cost less.

From what I can figure out he's after a small car or car-based van (no extra box on the back a la Fiat Fiorino) with a small tax engine for doing short runs that's capable of carrying bits of car and engine around.  Only needs two seats.

The Porsche will be available exactly as it stands (I think there's a short amount of MoT left on it) for £1100.  With a fresh MoT, a few things sorted - dash clock replacing, driver's window made to work again, a few bits of paint sorted (not rust) - he'd be looking at the £1500-1800 price range.

Other cars he's considered are a Triumph TR7 and a mk1 Mazda MX5, but these are both in contradiction of what he wants, so consider those the Shiter Wild Cards.

See if you can find the rare MG Express 'performance' version. Though the most obvious choice to me seems to be a Reliant Rialto, possibly in yellow, urgently needing de-twatting. Sorted!

I would love to convince him of the virtues of the three-wheeled marvel, but he's having none of it.  I have extolled the practical nature of the vehicle's design, it's low fuel consumption and tiny tax, but apparently he'd just feel like a fool driving it.

Dash clocks are made of super unobtainium, the smallest crappiest little digital clock ever made.

Mine packed up and they were so rare, that ten years ago I had to pay £60 for a used replacement.

I think Mike was going to replace the one in the car with a custom made multi-functional display instead because that's something he can do.

Do the van versions attract any sort of insurance premium over the car version?

Shame that, I had vague ambitions of owning a smiley face transit with some extra seats in the back as some sort of uber MPV but the insurance quotes were a bit silly. That and the rust. Plus the wife wasn't keen for some reason.

You need a transit Tourneo

I know this, unfortunately the wife does not know this....

Fairly easy to convert a 25/ZR to a van though the window blanks are difficult to find. I also think the Commerce had things like lashing points to make it easier for loads. Personally I'd convert a car as they are so much more common and cheaper.

I forgot to mention, C*rsas are considered unacceptable.  Also, Mike doesn't want a C*rsa.

I've had a Corsa so I know they are made of despair and hopelessness. Mine was a 3 cylinder 1.0 for added misery

I always feel a little bit guilty when I mention my well founded dislike of Vauxhall's most* popular hatchback but then I realise Billy has skin that's about four feet thick so really, I'm not hurting anyone after all.

In its defence mine never completely let me down and the 3cyl engine at least sounded interesting. It was just the fact it was so obviously designed by an accountant and built to a price.

Obviously all cars are built to a price but in the case of the Corsa that price was about £1.30

But perversely there is something about the corsa C vans that draws me to them. Obviously I am a secret corsa fetishist, and need help before I buy a convertible one or something.

Mg Express is more common than the Rover Commerce, the 1.4 in the Express is more powerful than the 1.4 in the Rover.Didn't Mr Bollox find out that the tax bands were different for commercials & his Commerce was no cheaper to tax than a bigger engined van?

The 'B' is definitely the sturdier of the bunch, and dare I say it even more reliable.

Wow, can he make me one?

My ludicrously expensive replacement has stopped lighting up, rendering it nigh on useless hidden away over there.

As said above if it's registered as a commercial then the tax will be the same as a transit size van regardless of engine size

I shall find out for you.  Hit 'like' instead of 'quote'...

Yeah a Rover Commerce defo costs significantly more than a Rover 25 in tax.

He did say he likes P6s, but then I pointed out that if fuel consumption and road tax are a worry then swapping a 944 for a P6 is even more daft than swapping a 944 for a Mk5 Allegro.

Oh, and our neighbour is selling a metallic green Corsa... C I think it is.  Fully road legal, reasonable condition bar a dented rear quarter from what I've seen... £450.

You want it, Billy?
