I don't like the look of s3s I think the s2 is a total looker.

S1 is the looker of the bunch I reckon, beautiful cars. Can you get an S2 Coupe at all? Damned nice looking motor them.

Posted

They only did the coupe as an s2 but they're a ducking fortune these days

Ugh. Wire wheels on an XJ! And no vinyl roof, which is interesting.

The S2 is beautiful - genuinely fabulous looking. To my eyes, they're one of the best looking cars ever made.

The S3 I don't like so much. It's the roof line, which is horrid. I much prefer my XJ40 to the Series 3. The roof line on a Jag is important to me and the '40's is much more similar to the that on the Series 2. The Series 3 also lost those exquisite Series 1&2 bumpers and rear end and is all th epoorer for it.

I do like the CX. They're my second favourite Citroen, after the SM. I have long had a thing for the early CX 2400 Pallas auto.

For £2k I would be looking for a nice mk2 granny with a V6.

You will get something decent for the money, that you can easily move on should you choose to.

I've already got one old Ford so I've reached my P11d scene tax limit.

i really should spend this money fixing that one. But I want something different.

That would get you a lovely example...

But I'd spend 2k on an XJ40 :-D :-D :-D

Just been reading a Brooklands road test compilation on S1/2 XJ6s, interesting reading, these really were regarded as the best car in the world by many at the time, particularly after the V12 came out. The ride quality and smoothness is still better than most modern luxury cars, even those without the curse of 'sports suspension'.

I really like the looks of the S1, although the S2 had many useful improvements such as proper heating and ventilation. But the S2 suffered from the worst of the BL period, there are lots of problems reported on these in contemporary road tests and running reports and the Yanks are particularly scathing, as they cost about 3 times as much as a regular Lincoln or Cadillac sedan but would frequently fail to proceed.

A S1 is an investment but would need cosseting, a S3 is probably the easiest to run as a everyday car I think. An overall production run of over 300,000 is actually pretty good for a car that was mostly built by BL in its darkest days.

Coupes are very rare, even projects will go for considerably more than £2k. I know of one visible from the Brecon/Llandovery road but as it has been in a Welsh field since at least 2009 it will be utterly fucked now :(

XJ's are stunning cars, but are absolute rubbish, complete rust prone oil leaking junk. Alfasuds (and I've had around 20) are now useless for daily use. The flat four was unbreakable for me (and I drove mine so very hard) and after caning a 1500 by accident (80 mph in 3rd by mistake) it picked up a big end shell. But, very easily rectified with a set of shells and carefully polishing the slight mark on the crank. Mine were all reliable, especially the late 1981 onwards SC's.

What would I go for? A late Alfa 164 Super Twin Spark. Very pretty, rotproof shell, tough engine. Or a really nice E34 535i manual. Very rare now but very nice.

The only Jag to have imo is the X300. Why would anyone want an old XK engined version when the immeasurably superior X300 is so laughably cheap?

S1s feel more like a 'Jaguar' product than the later ones which do feel a bit 'BL'. I had a MK10 (which I ran as an everyday car for years doing big miles even though it was ancient already! I loved that car...) and the early S1s felt similar to me, but much better. A mate had a 2.8 version and while a bit lacking in go, was really nice as it was quite high spec (not poverty like they usually were) and auto.

I had an S2  as mentioned before and it was fine but not as 'stately' as the S1. S3s are better all round. But, build quality is not great.

X300 is a lovely car and the engine feels great/powerful, refined and much better on fuel than the old tank engine 4.2. Thing about the old XK lump is it will go forever while suffering serious neglect (I had one that threw a rod but carried on running... until I turned it off, when it never turned over again!) but the engine in the X300 doesn't like neglect at all.

My mojo has gone floppy so even though I have cash burning a hole I've not found anything I want to buy. I had an X308 XJR so ticked that box. I've had an e28 m535i and a e34 535i Sport.

I went to see a P5b coupe for 1600 quid during the week but it was pretty rough and I don't have time to spend on it. There's no local garages around here interested in working on old motors either.

All you need to know about Jags, right here ^^

The XK engine was/is nowhere near as tough as the AJ6 series really. Cracked blocks, low oil pressure plus they don't seem to last that long if driven hard and they don't do 200'000 miles like the later one can. The AJ6 (esp. the 3.6) was a cracking unit, easily as good as anything Ze Germans built. I understand the 4.0 likes a head gasket but they're still a stoutly built old thing.

Kudo for driving a Mark X as a daily!

I sold my SD1 on Saturday and the money is burning a hole in my pocket. I could of course spend it on my wife and child or getting my Cortina back on the road but I of course went onto the RR for sale section instead and spotted the guy who I bought the SD1 one off is selling his SII XJ6. It looks really nice. i like it, it's my favourite XJ6.

Is this karma at work?

I know the seller, he's a good guy and he doesn't do things by half so I'm betting it's going to be a good car. it looks to have a load of bits replaced on it and doesn't look to have rot in any of the usual places. It's black with a vinyl roof with red leather interior 8)

As much as I admire these looks wise I know nothing about them. What questions do I need to ask? I dunno if it'd even fit in my lockup ffs.

Here's the advert. Words of warning or discouragment welcome.

Very cool to use a MKX as a daily. I am impressed! :-D

The AJ6/AJ16 used in the XJ-S, XJ40 and X300 is much, much stronger and more durable than the XK. They're nigh-on unburstable and incredibly tolerant of neglect. They can do huge mileages, if the body lasts long enough.

The V8 used in the X308 is a significantly more fragile unit which can suffer badly if not serviced. It is wonderfully smooth and more powerful, in its defence.

I think it's because it's in that valley between being a shed and a minter. People will spend big money on really clean ones but shit it when it comes to ones that are just nice drivers as they expect they'll have to spend big money on it or it'll be hiding gallons of rot.

In other news I just missed out on a really nice Starion Turbo. It was only a couple of miles away too but I faffed round for a day and missed it.

This has also popped up cheap on facebook. Downsides are it screams WANKER, all my mates would rip the piss out of me and these seems to have the ability to just

grenade their engines with no prior notice. Upsides is I hear they're good to drive, I am over due a midlife crisis. I am a wanker.

Starions are cool, and I hear they're GR9 to drive. You can still be a wanker in one. Just put stickers saying "JDM as fuck" "if it's not Jap it's crap" and a small soft toy on the towing eye.

A hard driven XK can be knackered at 60k.

Been behind a lot of smokey XJ6's.

I quite like those Boxters after driving a mate’s one a few weeks back.  He paid seven grand for a minter in Pulsar Silver or whatever it is, such a bargain.  Where I live is chock full of wankers so I didn’t feel out of place driving it.

I went to see it , it was a 2700 quid boxster if you know what I mean.

Kent alloys, red leather interior.

Buy.

If it's fucked then fix it.

I'd have bought the Jag already if it wasn't for the not inconsiderable matter of it not fitting in my garage.

The porsche looked very tidy. It has mixed service history, the eml was on along with a a rough idle (it was fine when it was revved). There was a bit of a whine in 1st and 2nd gear. It's probably not terrible for the money to be honest but I just shat it and ran away.

The guy texted me back saying he'd taken it to his mates garage and it was a historic code, which they cleared. Thats not to say it won't come back on and the rough idle hints at something else.

All the stuff on the web says the engines can just totally shite themselves without any prior notice, which is a bit worrying. It seems the first gen of water cooled Porsche boxer engines had a fair few issues. The 996 911's are the same.
