/\ That's be great if you could - I'm 60-70 miles away so OK to go for a proper trip out, but a bit of a trek just to check what they have in or whether they are still trading.

Either that or buy a local MOT failure example of a suitable van, cut the floor out and weigh in the rest.

I would suggest this, get a dead Escort or Kangoo (or whatever is the closest shape or size to your needs), cut the floor out, get a scrapper to pick up the rest, if the weather plays ball (unlikely I know) there's no reason why the donor needs to be living at your property/annoying the wife for more than a couple of days.

Alternatively, how about a large bit of flat steel sheet, and then either adapting it yourself or getting a local fabricators to press to the relevant shape?

That VW floor looks interesting indeed, I'm gonna give them a call tomorow. Cheers for that, if not a donor car is the way forward I think as its probably the cheaper way forward.

I'm "only" 200 miles away however I'm free tomorow, hmmmmm should I shouldnt I.....

David Kelly's is closing and the crusher is taking everything left immanently. Us the story Un told. I'm trying to do a deal on a Renault 15.

I was looking at steel roofing sheet - it's steel and corrugated but I don't know if it is thick enough.

I am sure a local metalworkers could make up a sheet of the correct gauge steel with corrugations? Would this not be a "clean" way to get a new panel without running into H&S issues?

Roof sheets are around 0.5mm - 0.7mm thick. I'm after something between 1.5mm to 2.5mm to also give it some strength once welded in place.

I'm yet to do my homework about the metal workers in my area and speak with anyone.

Right, since a number of people are saying David Kelly's is closing imminently I'm thinking about getting in the car and be there first thing in the morning. If there's nothing of interest, fair enough and I lose a tank of fuel.......but there may well be things which I can't find anywhere else and maybe even a Denem hidden away somewhere  :-D

- from that Twitter thing.

Well that confirms it, i'll be leaving Esher around 5am.

Since I've never been, is it a place you turn up and just wonder around? Do you have to be escorted? must you have boots, high vis etc ?

Posted

Not the last time I went. It's a proper old fashioned scrapyard, friendly owners, too.

Cheers, If I see anything interesting I'll make sure I'll take a snap of it and upload it tomorow evening :-)

If anyone else fancies a little trip and is free tomorow, I should be there first thing in the morning.

So guess who was up at 4am and on the road? Yep, this sad person right here.....

Anyways, small picking at David Kelly's yard to be honest howedvwr it is worth sharing the following with you. The crusher is there and speaking with them 99.9% of the cars will be gone by end of this week maybe next week, so if you're keen on anything DO ACT FAST.

I found a Renult 12 (which I must say I am half tempted by) and what I think resembled a renault 15 possibly in White.

The whole place is shutting shop at the end of the month for good just so you all know.

400 miles round trip, for a few pictures :-(

I don't suppose you saw a Stellar there did you?

EDIT - just given them a bell and unsurprisingly they're long gone :-(

So apparently he wants around £150 for the Renault 12, that's how much it's worth to him weighing in or scrapping it I think.

I don't have the means to store it for 6 months or but I'd like to possibly bring this back to life after the shifter is finished. According to DVLA it was registered in 1972 which means, legally it can have back plates. Getting it resprayed in metallic back with black plates would look good I think.

Is anyone here close to London that could facilitate storage? I'm guessing 6 months, it could be longer but once this goes it's gone, and I don't think there are many R12 left out there.

And I really want that 12 :-(

Anyone got a barn or a farm to keep it for me? Even if it's not near London.

SambaS - you need to get yourself a trailer and head down there, he said he will part with it. It does need work though, quite alot of it..

But, someone recently said to me 'choose your battles wisely' so I reckon a complete one from France would be a better idea.

Posted

True but it won't be RHD in that case, and how much is one over there? Granted it probably woundnt need anywhere near the same amount of work.

I personally think this is where double standards come in......because if they wanted to, they could cut it themselves but not one was interested in doing that (of course I offered to pay)

It is hard work and not as straight forward as it sounds however nothing is impossible, especially when you are financially rewarded for it but guess I am wanting too much on this occasion.

I've started looking at engineering companies in the area and maybe, JUST MAYBE, they have some sort of ribbed steel sheets that they sell.

I did have one smart @rse suggest, corrugated roof sheets.......  (only 0.5mm thick - WAY too thin, before anyone asks why they are not suitable)

Cutting out a floor is a pain in the arse, plus you have all the chassis crossmembers to hack through and remove afterwards,

plus the load areas are normally battered to fook, and rusty.

On a lot of vans there is a nice flat sheet of ribbed steel, that is much easier to remove,

probably won't be so battered or rusty either,

I'd be looking at roofskins if I were you ;-)

Bit more work on the shifter, 2nd cross member in today and a bit of Health & Safety :-)

Still struggling for a new floor, more searching will continue next week.

So, kept thinking I can't let that R12 go to waste......got myself a trailer and off I went. Got stuck in traffic at 4am this morning due to a crash, got stopped by the police TWICE on route but finally made it there around 10am. I completly forgot the car didn't have any wheels but found some in the boot and breaking alot of swear I managed to put them on. Reversed the trailer and then........THE FREAKING trailer company didn't put the wrench for the winch in the bag, improvised and managed to get the winch going......not for long because ALL WHEELS were locked up, kept pulling the car on the trailer but it hardly moved. Towed the car with my truck trying to get the wheels to turn but no luck, tried to winch it again on the trailer and then THE FREAKING WINCH SNAPPED!!!

Ended up leaving empty handed, not happy, not happy at all.

I've given up on it now, if anyone else fancies it.......you know where it is, talk

About bad luck.

Maybe I'll find another one, but work needs to continue on the Shifter first.
