Mk1 & Mk3 MR2's

So, just as I was before I bought my RS1600i over 1.5 years ago, I am back to thinking about the MR2 and MR-S - with a Rev 3 3SGTE conversion being the ultimate aim.

I do love the looks/handling, ride and feel of the Escort and if you ask anyone that knows me, I am not one to chop and change cars reguarly, but I just cannot get away from the fact that they are just too slow in modern traffic and ignoring the fact that it is 'wrong' to chop these cars about, even with a ZVH lump, I still wouldn't be happy, as it's a waste in a FWD chassis and I like my fun car to be just that.

So rather than fuck about with engine changes, I am giving serious thought to selling up.

In a perfect world, I would keep it and buy something else, but I cannot do that and to be honest, owning loads of cars has never appealed to me.

I prefer to give my full attention to just one (and the daily when needed).

So, I have been looking about online and mk1 prices are getting a bit too keen for my liking and the serious rust issues that they face is not something I want to be part of, but you cannot deny that they look superb and when converted to 'mk1.5' running around 300bhp, are not for the faint hearted - that part does appeal.

The MR-S is a brilliant chassis and a true convertible, with readily available hardtops.

Get one in the right colour, add the roof, lip kit and some.wheels and they 'man up' considerably, imo.

I have never owned a convertible, but I do enjoy the windows down and sunroof open whenever I get the chance, so I think it would be ideal for me - plus, no T-bar leaks and associated rust.

The mk3 is old enough to be cheap, but modern enough to be built well etc.

IMO it is a great base.

What do we know about prices for Roadsters? They seem to start at just over a grand for 100K mile examples with history and a few hundred quid less if they need a new engine.

No good for me, as I want a running and legal car and then to gather conversion parts etc, whilst still being able to drive it.

I am rambling, as I cannot sleep.

Unless a converted, rust free mk1 falls into my lap, I don't think I will bother with looking at them, so typing this has as good as made my mind up.

Any experiences with the MR-S? *cue hairdresser jokes*

In my head, this would be an engine swap project and nothing else major.

I have never owned a fast car and I would like to change that.

If it was me, I would reap the Ford profit and go for Japanese power.

But you're the opposite of me so you probably shouldn't.

Well you know me, mate. Jap stuff is where my interests have always been.

I have no hair and no need of a hairdresser but now have 3 years on an '05 MR2. Mine is sound but there are some rusty ones out there, especially look out for rotten rear sub-frames apparently. The convertible top is perfectly water tight and draught proof. Can be put up or folded down from the drivers seat with a bit of practice. I have never really gelled with it  but it is hard to fault for what it is. There are lots of tatty, Halfords loyalty card cars. Still a few "summer 3rd cars" to be had, like mine was. Mine has needed clutch, front dampers, Electro-hydraulic pas pump (all under warranty  ) and annual pre-mot fight with the notorious and useless handbrake. Rear tyres wear at an alarming rate despite my gentle driving and annual wheel alignment checks. 40+mpg is easy.
