We can't understand how they are managing to set accounts up.

The fact that we have some fairly sophisticated addons protecting us & first 5 posts have to be approved by staff helps also.

I assume that you are talking about ssh logins?

My ssh is configured to only accept public/private authentication.  If you try to login with password authentication it basically tells you to FO.  This seems to stop most of the attempts stone dead.
