Inspired by Barefoot I thought I'd keep a note of costs and mileage, so see how it all stacks up. Here's what I've spent so far:

Focus

182055 miles at start of Jan

New front discs & pads £31

New radiator & lower grille (due to hitting a rock on our track :( ) £40 + £15

Discovery

~156k miles at start of Jan

Insurance £189

Headlight switch £12.50

Replacement exhaust - free from spares car

BX

227225 miles at start of Jan

6 months tax £124

Indicator £10

Cambelt £17

LT

243408 miles at start of Jan

Cambelt £25

Tow ball & new bolts £20

Nice low mileage fleet...

I daren't add up the cost of mine. It helps the man maths add up.

I may regret doing this, but I can always fiddle the figures by taking out the non-essentials! Justifiable as it's partly a hobby, partly a means of transport. It's probably too early to work out a cost per mile, but I'll give it a go anyway.

Focus now at 186103 miles, giving a cost of 21 pence per mile. Plus fuel at 14 pence a mile.

Discovery at 156228 miles, giving £1.13 a mile. I haven't put this on Fuelly as the LPG and petrol costs make working out difficult.

BX now at 227745 miles (only used it for 2 weeks), giving 29 pence a mile. Plus fuel at 16 pence.

LT hasn't moved, so that make it the most expensive to run so far! 25 pence a mile for fuel when it is on the road though.

Result! In that I've spent even more money on a vehicle which hasn't done a single mile this year...

I've been looking for a front bumper for the van for at least the last year, and had recently found one from VW Heritage for £200. I was trying to justify that to myself when I found one in from for 160 Euros plus delivery, which worked out as around £160. But then one popped up on eBay, which I won today for £107 :-) It was only fitted for 3 years of the 21 in production, and second hand ones always seem to be cracked as nobody takes care of vans. (Apart from me, evidently!)

BX now at 229,570 miles, meaning 2345 miles so far since the beginning of March. In addition to the cambelt it had a service (oil & air filter £5 each, oil @ £2.40/litre) with new front brake pads (£26). Bringing the total to £199 for the year or 8.5 pence a mile.

Van had a cambelt change and oil change today - 7 litres of oil @ £2.40 a litre, oil filter £10. Still zero miles this year though!

BX at 230,436 miles now, with extra costs of an MOT @ £45 which it failed on the brake light switch (£10) and a leaking return pipe (£20). Annoyingly the brake lights were working two days previously, but I guess that's just bad luck. 3211 miles for £274, still at 8.5 pence a mile.

Taxed the van this evening...another £126 for no miles but that should change shortly - a good few thousand miles around France coming up in a month or so.

Update time:

Focus now sold at 186,252 miles. Cost per mile 21 p plus fuel = 35 p.

Kangoo (replacement) has covered 1688 miles since May and has had a fuel filter (£8.04) and air filter (£6.66), also road tax at £66. Cost per mile 5 p plus fuel at 12 p.

Van now up to 245828 miles, with the only extra cost being insurance at £146, so running at 19 p a mile plus 25 p for fuel - not as bad as I thought.

This month I've spent £50 on the van MOT, £30 for handbrake cables (there was a slight imbalance picked up on the rollers), and £12 on the alternator regulator/brushes. Cost for the year £559.60. Now up to 246,366 miles so still 19 pence a mile.

I've (finally!) replaced the heater fan motor in the van, at a cost of £66.42. Cross referencing the Bosch part number and buying it from RS instead of VW was a wise move, as they wanted something like £350!!! Mileage now up to 248,020 and cost for the year is £626.02, making the cost per mile 13.5 pence.

No other costs to report, although I've just bought some winter tyres for the Kangoo. I'll work out the cost per mile for that once I fit them, as it's a bit early to put them on yet but I spotted a bargain :-)
