Tetleysmooth Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Just lately, I've had a penchant for a Volvo estate.I wanted scooter's T5, but time and logistics have sort of knocked the idea on the head. I did pm scooters earlier on this week, but it looks like he hasn't been online for a while now. Hope the chap's ok.Anyhow, a workmate has a Volvo sitting outside his house. It belongs to his son. It's an R reg V70R. It has been tested to roughly 306 bhp, so a bit of a monster.A couple of months ago, the lad hit a kerb with it. It must have been a substancial clout, because it broke a wishbone and a track rod end. My mate dragged it back to his place with his Land Rover, and that's where it sits now. The wishbone and track rod end have been replaced. When I asked my mate how it drove now, he said 'it makes a funny noise'. My suggestion was damaged cv joints in the driveshaft. I haven't heard it, so I have no idea really. Apparently, the engine is excellent. The car is a manual, which I don't normally go for, but this one has tickled my scrotum somewhat. My mate knows I want it, and has been trying to get his son to part with it, with no luck up until now. I got a text from my mate this morning to say his son is coming round, but don't hold your breath. So, this may become available to me soon, but needless to say, I'm a tad worried about damage I can't see, like steering geometry etc.The damage is on the offside. I don't even know where the gearbox is on these, offside, nearside or rear of the engine. So, what do you good people reckon (should the car become available)? Run a mile or buy it and take a chance.I look forward to the collective AS opinion.
skattrd Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 T5's are plentiful, unless it's very cheap I wouldn't risk it. Sigmund Fraud 1
trigger Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I guess it all depends on the price, If it's cheap enough to warranty the repairs then why not?. I bet it really flys!
Tetleysmooth Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 Well, I'm rather hoping it's going to come along at roughly scrap money. That's what my mate thinks it's worth.Still mot'd and taxed BTW.
Six-cylinder Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 It would be nice to have an R spec car that will make it a bit more special, but as others have said they are not high value and if it has bent a chassis rail or something it could turn out to be a lot of work when a running T5 is a cheap car anyway.
purplebargeken Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Nice old things but as cheap as a portion of deep fried chipped potatoes. Could well be CV. Tons on ebay and breakers so bits should not be uber pricey. Gotta be worth a go at scrap or just above price.
Junkman Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I wouldn't risk it even if it was very cheap. In fact, I would run like f00k.A V70 is way too fast even in standard form, so whoever thought it is too slow, then applied some go faster goodies an army of graduate engineers at Volvo refrained from fitting, then subsequently drove the car into a kerb with such vehemency that the suspension broke, just isn't the kind of person I would by a car from, even if he sold his grandma's. Ovlov Estate? There is a beige 240 out there somewhere, I bet. alf892 and Spiny Norman 2
Tetleysmooth Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 Does anyone know if scooters is ok?I know he had some complaint called labyrithis or something and was making him poorly. His T5 is an auto too, which makes it much more desirable to me.
DVee8 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 What you need of course is Mr Ramrods 940 estate Junkman and eddyramrod 2
Lankytim Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 If its cheap enough then go for it. Get it properly aligned at a garage and replace whatever needs doing. If its terminally warped then break it and scrap it.
Tetleysmooth Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 What you need of course is Mr Ramrods 940 estate That would be the ideal solution, but the two I'm interested in at the mo are pretty much scrap money, which is about all I'm worth just now. That's no reflection on Eddy's Volvo though, worth every shekel. eddyramrod, Junkman and DVee8 3
eddyramrod Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Money is just numbers. If they could be played in the right order (so not by Eric Morecambe) then a song could be sung. chaseracer 1
fordperv Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Send it to my house so I can have the engine for my capri, I have seriously been thinking about the conversion, well if people can put them into 940's, using the same thinking and parts one should go in a Capri without causing me too much grief
Spiny Norman Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 If it's been driven in such a way that it's been skelped off a kerb you don't want it, no matter how cheap. These aren't that expensive anyway, and a good one for a grand is going to far, far cheaper in the long run than a fucked free one. RichL Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 As much as I love an old Volvo, and decent R's are getting rare, I'd avoid it. Must have been a big impact to break a wishbone.Standard one with an autobox? YES... eddyramrod 1
eddyramrod Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Ebay Tat Thread, Dave. There's one waiting for you, might even be walking distance (you can tell I don't live in Essex, lol).
Tetleysmooth Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 Ebay Tat Thread, Dave. There's one waiting for you, might even be walking distance (you can tell I don't live in Essex, lol). Very grateful to everyone thinking of me, but would rather have one a tad later. If I were to bring that home, my missus would take me to Romford market, stand me right in the middle, point at me and laugh. I used to love the 145's and 245's in the eighties though. A car I always wanted, but could never afford.
dome Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I have spoken to scooters and he is still OK, although he is in Cheshire. Not sure if that's the same thing. For my money, it'd be a rwd Volvo or a fwd Saab... Spiny Norman and eddyramrod 2
Tetleysmooth Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 Good to hear about scooters.Apparently, he couldn't look at a pc monitor without puking. That's the way I feel when I see some of the ebay 'bargains'.
