Volvo For Sale, prepare now for next winter!

Yes, it's that time, the point in the year when a middle-aged man's fancy turns to the coming season of Classic Car shows, and how to lay his paws on a car the far side of 20 years old so that he can get in as an exhibitor.  When said middle-aged man lives in a little terraced street and already has two cars, obviously one has to go.  It can't be the posh blob because that's the wheelchair-carrier, so it's going to be the winter-beater Volvo.

P825 VBB is a 1996 940SE estate, 2.3 petrol turbo auto.  White, with towbar, wearing Volvo ally wheels from elsewhere in the range.  I think the SE had steels from new, but that was a long time ago.  It's got a load of T&T (can't remember exactly when they run out but I'm sure it's in Rawy's thread: http://autoshite.com/topic/15006-volvo-940-estate-%C2%A3250-june-2014-mot-preston/?do=findComment&comment=473885 ).  I paid him for the tax that was left on it, which runs out in September I think; some time away anyway.  I've had it serviced, including a new cambelt, as Rawy had no record of it being done.  I'm driving it to work daily, which it's doing admirably.  So it should!  For a Volvo, it's low-mileage, about 143,000 IIRC, so there should be many years left in it yet.  The interior is half-leather.  It's only a 5-seater (no third row) but I only need one most of the time anyway!  Radio/cassette deck is the Volvo OEM unit, and works.  Turbo appears dry, no apparent oil leaks.  It starts every time at stupid o'clock in the morning, and pulls away from cold cleanly.  Electric windows all round and central locking via the key.  I've only got one set of keys (doors/boot/ignition which is all one key, and filler cap).  There's no sunroof and no built-in roof rails either.  It's covered in battlescars, I don't think there's one panel that doesn't have a dent in it somewhere.  There are bits of rust showing here and there, none of them serious.  The courtesy lights don't seem to work (I'm getting in and out in darkness a LOT) but if you switch them on manually they all seem to be fine.  I replaced the two back tyres with some nice winter Hankooks, which means all the locking wheelnuts are now history; you may remember I had no key for them.  All the tyres should now wear out roughly together, probably after the next MoT, or even the one beyond that.  I also pulled the wiper rack off a 760 estate so my local garage could use it to bodge the wipers; the bodge was magnificent and they now work.

And that's it.  You've seen my collection thread, and no doubt you will remember Rawy's two threads offering it for sale.  I love the thing, I wouldn't be offering it at all if I didn't have plans for a summer of shows, and even then, if I had a driveway it could stay, I'd just keep using it as my daily.  I can take it anywhere with confidence because it's so reassuring to drive, and I don't worry about leaving it unattended.  What's one more scar?

Oh yes, you want to talk price, don't you?  I know what it owes me and I understand depreciation.  I'm going to open at £500, let's see what happens.  That obviously includes the tax that remains and whatever fuel is left in, so you can jump in and drive away.  Whether you live in St Helens, St Andrews or St Austell, I would be sure of it getting you there, in comfort.  But do bring petrol money if you're going long-distance!

I'll add some of my photos of it later when I'm on the other computer (laptop doesn't have as much storage).  Meanwhile if you check out Rawy's thread (link above) his pics are on there; it hasn't changed much.

...Load-lugging ability confirmed!

Thanks Dave.  It photographs well, which I put down to being white.  Also, it was clean then... it hasn't been washed since I bought it!   When you get up close you do start to see all the assorted little dents and scrapes, but really, none of them spoil it, they just add character.  Who in a car park is going to argue with a beat-up old Volvo estate?

Best, most practical cars ever IMO. If you can handle the fuel consumption you'll save a fortune in not having to fix a damn thing, ever. Add a manual boost controller and you can do 140mph, if you happen to be that way inclined. Is it an MPV? Is it a van? No, it's superfuckingawesomecar.

I should add, I have owned 3 940s, two of which I knacked for spares, one I still own. I humbly offer internet advice to any purchaser of this HOT BITCH.

I like the idea of this a lot, it's the best-looking of the Volvos and in the best colour.  If it were a disesal manual and this was in eight months time etc etc...it isn't though so have a bump instead.

If you're going to have a bump, have it in a Volvo...

There's a car on the bay that I intend to bid on tonight, so I could do with someone taking an interest here.  Price flexible!  I want to be sitting on the left again, soon.

I might be in need of a quick sale here chaps, take advantage of me!

Pretty remarkable that this is only a few months older than my car - in terms of design or chassis they couldn't be further apart

I've washed it today.  It still looks disreputable!

Oh NOW you ask me, when it's dark!  I'll shoot a couple tomorrow if I finish in time.  It really doesn't look much different to the photos above, except I've got rid of quite a lot of the paper stickers you can see on the windows.

...Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand of course I failed to get a snap of the clean(-ish) Volvo today, so must remember to try again tomorrow.  Don't hold your breath...

OMGFOTOFAIL again today.  However I did meet up with dave862 of this parish and grab some wheelnuts from the Ovlov he's prepping for a banger race.  Thanks Dave!

Have to do my own bump again.  You just can't get the staff these days...

Eddy can I helpfully add that I really like this and would have bought it but blah blah etc etc. Have promised no new car until my wife goes back to work after maternity leave :(

Cheers Aldo, they do say it's the thought that counts, don't they?  Of course "the thought" doesn't clear a parking space in a congested street, nor does it cover the insurance on a third car.  I'm watching a couple that finish in the next day or two, that I fancy...

Bugger. I can confirm that Volvos are the transport of winners/doggers/sheep rustlers/flytippers and that if I had the cash I'd absolutely add another estate to my life.

I don't though. Bugger.

GLWTS etc.

They absolutely are!  I will miss this, and would be keeping it if I had some private off-road parking.  In fact I'd continue using it!  I filled the tank yesterday, which should last a couple of weeks of my little commute.  Of course if someone buys it in that time, they will score a goodly chunk of their homeward trip at no cost.

I'm open to offers of swap/PX either way, for something older.  Regular readers well know the kind of stuff I like/don't like. ;-)

I'll upload a couple of pics later tonight, taken this week so at least you will see it doesn't really look any different from how it did in November!

Finally: the fresh pics I promised you!  I shot these on Wednesday afternoon, at work.

It was about 2.15pm, if that makes any difference.  Considering this car does carry some honourable battlescars, it doesn't really look bad, does it?  It's about five days here since the last (first) time I washed it too.

Also it's very comfy and drives beautifully, with buckets of power when you want it.  Why am I selling then?  Because I'm an idiot?  (Don't answer that!)

Because I want something a fair bit older, that not only can I use daily, but also can exhibit on a showfield.  Come October I'll be flogging that, and looking for another Volvo, or something almost as winterlicious.  Strange boy...

Nothing strange about that Eddy.

I'm going to get a couple of insurance quotes tomorrow.

Then all I've got to do is sell the Chrysler.
