The second video is great. I remember it. "Dash my buttons!" :)

filthyjohn on here has a 'varicose vein' blue 340.

What cars not to buy? Anything that's had Quentin and his Magic Screwdriver around them, I'd imagine.

You  are about right, Pillock!    I was going to suggest that anything that bloke tells me not to do is a surefire winner...

Those QW videos are brilliant. It shows that despite the Internet, eBay, Gumtree and such like, the principles if buying an old motor haven't changed a hell of alot.

I really like these old Top Gear videos (if you ignore the posted comments from the people who can barely string a sentence together trying to tell the person who posted the video that this isn’t Top Gear).  I remember the guide to buying a banger one well, according to the youtube poster it’s from 1997 a period when I think Top Gear was at it’s best.

I find Quentin Willson is ok but I hate the way he always had to big up German cars all the time, I honestly think its solely due to him that people in the UK believe that German cars are by far the most reliable/well built/refined/blah blah blah, for example on the video he says “and it’s a Volkwagen so it’ll last forever†well the DVLA suggest that the 1990 Polo lasted only another 3 years as its date of liability is 2000, so 10 years and 10 months is not what I’d call forever. The Talbot Sunbeam (which was my favourite on the video) lasted until 2004 and the Morris Oxford and Triumph Acclaim are both on SORN (couldn’t read the Volvos plate).

Quentin gets bonus points for starting his search in the Selly Sausage which is still a great place for a big fry up.

I much prefer these old top gears to the new one, less ridiculous, more informative, and about cars I want to hear about!

He also rampantly moves his head about the place, but I think he's okay.

I have a meeting in Northfield on Friday morning - now I know where I'm having lunch!

He's OK. Better than Brewer.

An ostrich with its nethers in a blender is better than Brewer...

Brewer is just the biggest (quite literally) waste of space.

Quentin Wilson is informative and does seem to know what he's talking about.

Two other places of interest* near the Selly Sausage are the old skool car lot over the road and down Harrow Road (out the sasage turn left then first right) is Selly Oak Tyres which do fair pricing and a good deal on tracking (free check, 25 squid an end to adjust).

Quentin, as has been well documented, was quite handy with various "mileage adjustment tools".............quite how he's managed to worm his way into several lucrative advertising contracts, and a column in one of the more up market classic car comics has always been a source of bewilderment to me.................

QW was subject of a 'your life' sorta prog IIRC.

Generally speaking, he admitted, the allure of "trousering a wad" turned his head from serious academe.

He was doing deals on 'tatty chod' in his early teens ;)

The worst motoring journalist i have ever seen on TV is Brendan Coogan.

"My favourite 70's sports car is the Nissan 360Z"

Steve Coogan's annoying brother isn't he? 'Steeeeeve Burreh' is another annoying mong who knows little about cars too. Count Quentula also waxed lyrically over the MG6 for a pocket full of cash, even though it's a Chinese Takeaway nobody wants, or cares about, I saw the film and couldn't stop cringing.

Quentin Willson's alright. I remember those old Top Gear videos. He does talk in soundbytes a lot though.

Here he is waxing lyrical (Shit, I'm doing it now!) about the 1993 Honda Legend...

A regular 'talker' on Jeremy Vine's Radio 2 lunch time Talk show when anything transport related makes national news. Like 99% of JV's guests, quite slappable if one was presented with the opportunity.

He replaced Clarkson on Top Gear and got busted for drunk driving about three milliseconds later.
