Is it likely to be on all it's original springs? Surely at least one set of them has been replaced by standard chinese re-sprung dishwasher.

If you want to got ZOMG DR1FT weapon, coil overs aren't very expensive.

Meh, if it ends up needing loads for the not in October I'll cut the roof off and have a v8 Jacuzzi.

First impressions are that the 171000 miles have been very gentle ones. 2 owners from new and has had an average of £4-500 spent on it every service. Interior is immaculate, sounds like sex on wheels, the ASC button might as well be labelled Benson and Hedges for the smoke it produces, I love every inch of it!

So, unexpectedly the agency have found someone to cover for me next week so tomorrow I'm off with the wife to join her family on holiday in Cumbria. 410 mile round trip, naturally we should shun her 2005 Saab convertible and take the bargain bucket bmw!! A total of £109 spent on 7.5 litres of oil, plugs, fuel filter, replacement cone air filter (airbox missing!), mp3/fm only stereo with adaptor plate.

Also I removed the knackered pollen filters and hoovered out the leaves from the intakes, treated any bubbles on the underside pipes, greased the hubs and wheelbolts, found it's had new brakes all round and a couple of bad bits :( the sills are starting to rot next to the fuel tank both sides so that will need sorting before October (mot) and the front tca bushes are splitting. Not too bad really. Stripped a load of plastic crap off the engine not only for looks but in case of breakdown, makes access easier!

Well it got us here, 206 miles and sipped (bollocks!) £40 quid of unleaded. That sodding stereo is total crap though as all it does is pick up alternator interference and whine like a mofo so the stock head head unit may have to go back in and I burn everything to CD. The v8 sounds bloody lovelly cruising up the m6!

We arrived home about 3 hours ago, now covered 900 trouble free miles and in supreme comfort.... Still haven't tried the a/c yet I think that would be tempting fate.

How you finding fuel? I had mine for a while mainly for crawling the M25 and the 2.5 6 pot wasn't toooooo bad, but then again not great either.

E39 appreciation thread. I had a 528 and used to get about 26-28 to the gallon, it was a ace cruiser. But it used quite a bit of oil as was the old nikasil block but had done 130k, so if its still going it aint gonna give up now, just kept it topped up. I would love a v8, i believe the cooling systems needs to be a1 on these, my uncle had a 740 which was very swift it provoked.

That's nice, much prefer those wheels. Yep as you say, the water pumps can be suspect due to plastic impellers.

Thanks guys, its a beauty.

Fuel wise it uses it in £40 blocks! Nuneaton to Cumbria, £40. Bassenthwaite to Whitehaven and back, £40. Bassenthwaite to Morecambe and back £40. Cumbria to Nuneaton £40 yadda yadda yadda....

Doesn't matter if it's 70 miles or 200 miles!!

Also, ref the nikasil issue. We've had 5 e34 and e39s. 120-220k miles each one and never had an issue. This one ticked over 172000 on the way home, not a drop used.

most of the nikasil issues got resolved early on and the ones that didnt are already deed.

Exactly the point I made to a hapless eBay punter on the 220k one, it runs what more do you want :)

After chatting about and posting a pic of my old 523 last night I only went and passed it this evening in Eastwood (Essex), what are the chances. Driven by a blonde lady who I think saw me rubber necking it, S84 FAN still lives :-)

My old E39 528 Auto would always return 23 - 28 mpg, and only very occasionally a little better when on a long sustained motorway cruise.  I kept her for about 7 years and can't remember ever putting any oil in her.  Finally moved her on - with about 115k on the clock - for another E39 but this time the V8 535i.  This, surprisingly, gives me better mpg figures than the old straight six 2.8 on a run, tho a little worse maybe around town. She does sound very nice albeit very muted.

Fuel is usually consumed in £50 blocks!

I had a 540i E34 for years and it did about 18mpg locally, 23-26mpg on runs. And that was from the lying OBC!  Slightly better locally, worse on a run than the 5.7 Corvette I also ran for years.
