Here we have for sale a 1989 Golf clipper.

The clipper was fitted with the GTI style body kit and quad lamps but the 1.8 carburettor engine.

This particular example has been my girlfriends daily driver for the last 18 months and has done sterling work of commuting to Manchester 3 days a week in all weathers. With a baby on the way we have to face up to the fact that we can't fit 2 child seats in it safely so it has to go.

Overall condition is good for the year with the main highlight for me being that it is standard and not messed around with in any way.

From the ride height and steel wheels to the removable Panasonic radio cassette, she is as she left the dealer in '89.

The motor is fitted with a Weber carb conversion, a big bonus as the standard pierburg is well known to be a pile of poo. The carb base gasket has been replaced in our ownership along with the alternator, where we replaced the failing aftermarket rubbish it was fitted with with a second hand Bosch item with a new brush pack.

The car comes with a quite extensive history including an engine refurb with a brand new cylinder head in 2002 and a new hood at about the same time. The hood of the car is still 100% watertight.

Negative points include wear to the drivers seat (pictured) some very small areas of cosmetic rust (also pictured) and the hood could do with a rear tension cable and some adjustment to the channel above the drivers door. The car seems to need a few seconds for full throttle to get started in the morning, but in my experience this is normal for an old VW on a carb!

The car is in need of a wash, I will try and get it washed and some more pictures up later in the week but time and the weather are not on my side!

Overall this is a lovely car that polishes up great and needs very little doing to it. With tax and MOT still current you could pop it on classic insurance (£130 a year fully comp for me) and drive away!

Any questions please ask.

Fixed. I know it gives a pretty poor impression listing for sale without washing it, but it's snowing out there.

We looked everywhere for a roof rack for a convertible yet somehow couldn't find one.

If any fruit fanciers are interested in the car but put off by it's standard condition, I still have the kwalitee* spax lowering springs it was on when it came to us which can be included FOC.

If it had a pineapple, was lower mileage, less money, closer to me, had different wheels and was red, I'd snatch your hand off.

I believe I still have the relevant cable that needs replacing that someone on here gave me for the Golf that was scrapped.  I'd be happy to throw it at a shiter that buys this... I mean, throw it in with the sale.

I  demur.  Advertising a car covered in plastered on badger dung is very Autoshite, and echt korrekt.

Your roof rack searching skills fail to reach the minimum standards, no wonder you're not allowed on the pineapple scene.

Nice Clipper there dink. Had two of these but both GTI's (Paprika red E reg then a Black H reg).

Very good cars, fuel filler necks can be a PITA when they rot (and they do well) but that looks value to me, on Essex plates aswell 8)

Thanks all for the kind comments. Fuel filler is fine, checked upon purchase and regularly since.

The plates. It has been on a private reg in the past, this reg is noted as being non transferable on the v5 so presumably this was the one given when it was re-registered. The history from the early 2000s has it in Essex on a plate of A 2 something, so that fits.

And that roofrack, I don't have words. Looks like you have to drill the pillars to fit it?

This is still here people, so feel free to make offers, insulting or otherwise.

Apologies if you're only here for the prefix.

I tried to put it on but it's beyond my abilities.

Yep HJ is Essex registered.

Wash, polish and wait for the sun to come out and take fotoz on a gravel driveway in the Spring, it'll go no probs. Mongbay is quite a good place to flog stuff like that as I imagine plenty of OMG VW Dubbers use Mongbay for the weekly shop let alone their rides who will then call you up referring to you as Buddy or Dude.

Speaking from experience of selling one of course, had a black H reg GTi Cabby in 2008.

Someone MUST buy this.

Not only do you get a floppytop VW Gilf, you also get the chance to visit one of the finest towns on this Earth.

What area of da Hudd are you in Dink? The first picture is making me think somewhere up the top of Golcar but the rest say otherwise.

It's been on the bay just recently but only got to £695 RNM. Not planning to let it go that cheap but can't keep it forever due to suspected impending doovla fine. Has anyone ever been fined for leaving a car taxed but not insured?

Spot on mate, I am in Golcar, not a native though I've been here about 1.5 years.

Drove up the road to try and find somewhere fieldy looking for photos, they were taken somewhere Scapegoat Hill / Bolster Moor. I take it you're from round here somewhere when you're not everywhere else?

Posted

£695 really? I thought these all went north of a grand now for anything on its toes whether clipper or Gti?

Regarding Taxed and no Insurance that is fine as long as the car is kept off a public highway you don't need to insure a car.

Yeah, I've spent most of my life in and around Shat but I'm not an inbred hillbilly, honest.

I've forwarded the details to a few VW touchers that I know round that way.

GLWTS.

Yes I was disappointed with £695, should probably relist with better pictures. It had nearly 100 watchers but the last minute bidding just didn't occur. The auction finished at 16:45 on a Monday so bad planning there on my part.

Tax/insurance, I thought this would apply - https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-vehicles my understanding of which is that a car must be insured if taxed.

We have left the tax on as the place it is parked is not exactly off-road.

I doubt a fine will actually arrive but we'd like it gone sooner rather than later ideally.

Shat? Is that some even more local pronunciation of Slawit?

Thanks for the help, am available for viewings etc most evenings.

Hmm not sure then, I thought a car needed insurance only when on a public highway. However its very unlikely you'll get a fine but sods law someone might help themselves to the Golf the longer it sits out there uninsured? You could try a free listing on the GolfGti forum which caters for all Golfs Mk1 to current..

Sorry, that's what (almost) everyone calls Skelmanthorpe.

Bit sad that this isn't inspiring more/higher bidding, even at this time of year.  Have you tried the Mk1 Golf Owners' Club?

If it doesn't make the reserve and you re-list it, I'd give it a proper good polish (the weather can't still be that bad, even in Huddersfield, can it?), post as many photos as you're allowed (12 now?) and make the good points a lot more prominent in the ad -

  • Extensive history,
  • 100% leak-free hood,
  • Fuel filler neck solid,
  • Reliable, used as daily driver
  • MOT till the end of the summer
  • Comes with lowering springs if you like that sort of thing

etc

I'm no expert, you just seem to be underselling it a bit...

(Hope this doesn't come across as patronising, it's not meant to be)

Posted

As above really, wash it (or pay the polish fellas a tenner) take plenty of pics all in the same location with hood up and down. I still think there is a grand of car there easily.....

Posted

Watched this finish, I think there could be more than the auction money today but you know it never looks good when I car is re-listed a few times so some new pics, a wash, spit and polish etc...

sold my 90/H Gti Cabriolet in black for £900 about 6 years ago
