My mate has just bought a rare manual gearbox  BMW 530i touring for well under 2K.  2001, blue, beige levva, woody bits, fully loaded with Teutonic toys, straight six blattermotor with comfy-bum suspension, posh wheels and tyres.  Pretty spiff, I reckon, although not my thang.   He is a total perfectionist, so will make it well shiny, even though it looks pretty OK to me as is.

Of all the options mentioned, the ones that are particularly floating my boat are the ex-plod Senator, Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo, Rover Coupe (although if that 420 Turbo wasn’t chavved up that would be one of the best things of ever) and the Mitsubishi FTO.

The Senator would be GR9 for driving up and down the motorway network in a hi-vis worrying those who have been in a coma since the early 90s. The downside is that I haven’t heard great things about their handling and suspect that being such a big barge it wouldn’t be all that great to really chuck into a corner.

The Fiat Couple is a car I have loved for a great many years, ever since I bought one on Gran Turismo 2 back when I was about 10. I have wanted one ever since and was for-ever bugging my Dad to buy one whenever he was considering a new car, but sadly he never did. Last year when I had my Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 I gave serious consideration to buying one off Panhard65 of this parish and even gave it a test drive but compared to the Alfa I found the steering really lifeless, which put me off a little at the time, even if it was bloody rapid.

The Rover. It’s always a good time to move over to Austin Rover. I have always liked the coupe but I expect the majority of these have been thrashed now and I doubt they are quite so resilient to neglect as similar Jap motors. The Hatch or Saloon seems like a better bet, and in some ways preferable thanks to being such sleepers, but these are very few and far between.

Finally the Mitsubishi does seem like a good overall bet, they seem to be pretty tough and I do really like how they look, a bit like a small Aston Martin. The only difficulty will be buying a good one, so many seem to be severely Barried and generally ruined, but there are still enough around to make this a fairly easy car to get hold of.

I’m sure that in the end I will end up with none of these and will end up with a Austin A35 or a Talbot Solara or whatever.

What about a Ford Puma 1.7?  A friend of mine had one at college (actually, I think he still has it).  It had been chipped and it accelerated like nothing I have ever been in before or since.  Absolutely ridiculous turn of speed for such a small car but of course it depends on finding one that isn't full of holes.  That and the interior is like a darker, more cramped Mk4 Fiesta.

Nowt wrong with a Solara.  A 1.6 with a Murena twin carb conversion would, I imagine, be an entertainingly rapid bit of kit.

I wouldn't be too worried about the Fiat Coupe having lifeless steering.  After a 156, pretty much any steering system is going to feel a bit vague.  Next time you test drive one, do a few miles in my Carina E first - the Fiat will feel like a go-kart after that.

Also, I thought my Senators handled rather well for a car of their size.

Talk of the speed available from 1.7 Pumas reminds me that a friend of mine has a rough looking mk4 Fiesta that someone has dropped a 1.8 Mondeo engine into,  apparently it's rather quick.

As far as most speed for least £s goes it's got to rate fairly well

nobody has mentioned a lexus soarer yet. i had a 2.5 twin turbo a few years back and it was soooo fast. pick one up for less than a grand.

got to be worth a shout.

My allegro 1100.

I got into trouble by the Powersthatbe when I accelerated hard in an easterly direction, thereby stopping the rotation of the earth. I had to do a quick 180 and restart the globe spin before birds flew into trees and fish died etc.

On a less serious note, my mate had a 20v fiat coupe and I had to use every foot of my bollock radius in order to burn him off on my fireblade.

Two issues I have.

1. This thread looks more and more like a thread from a different forum.

2. One of the few true Autoshiter choices is currently being bid into Escort MKII territory:

Which unfortunately happens increasingly often with the cornerstones of Autoshitism of yore.

Hence I'm taking a step back and say that fast is

A. relative

B. largely depending on the height of the cliff.

the fact that it's being bought for 2 old push bikes doubly so!

That's a bloody good idea, wish I'd have thought of it.

Pushbikes are a good hard currency nowadays, in any part of the country.

Well I am sure you would try before you buy but one of these things is on my list of worst cars I've ever driven. (A nearly new car)  Lots of power, which it has, is useless when everything else is so crap. You would have much more FUN with an A35 or Solara.

Mk4 Golf GTi 1.8T or a 4motion? cheap, well put together, no worries about buying one with a million miles on and very fast.

Had a 1999 Golf 1.8T until a year ago, superb bit of kit for £850, sold a year later for £875 8)

Impreza Turbo2000's Wagons are usually available at under a grand, some of them even been used sensibly because they lack some of the 'twa*raction' of the old classic shape chav self-extinction devices.

OMGGRENADE though..... usually about 100k ;-)

For 'quick' though, nothing beats speed of tinworm than the Fiat Coupe's though.....

Mr Smug signing in here ...  I have a 12 year old Saab 9-3 Aero (my daily)  which goes like shit off a shovel and a Fiat 20v Coupe that goes like diarrhoea off a shovel.  Both are worth a couple of balloons each.  Both have issues, but what doesn't? There's never been a better time yadda yadda etc
