Talk S40 to me.

Miss Partridge wants to get a car, and is interested in getting a Volvo S40 MK1 after I brought the idea up. This has nothing to do with me watching too many old BTCC clips online. Her's must have glow plugs and three pedals.

I'm thinking they should be fairly bearable to live with, should be OK for parts and insurance and good for OMG AMAZING SWEDISH SAFETY.

I've looked on HJ etc etc but I'm seeking Autoshite's own special brand of advice and gentle guidance. In short, who's owned one, are they crap, what goes wrong?

Five Mr Bo11_ox Internet Points for every answer you give.

I had a V40. Nothing went wrong, at all. Everything felt like it was made in Scotland, from girders. I had a pez, which wasn't particularly frugal given the amount of girders the car contained.

It wasn't fast, and the handling was shit.

They have a little clip on the windscreen for parking tickets. Genius.

I've had two - both Mitsubishi-engined versions, and the two dullest cars I've ever owned.  Having said that, a mate ran a diesel version with the old 1.9 Renner turbo engine as his daily for ages, and swore by it.  Still not going to be the most characterful thing on the road, but should give decent, reliable ('cos pre-dci), economical motoring.  Not sure safety standards are quite up to the bigger Volvos as they're a Carisma underneath,  but I'd still rather have a crash in one of these than, say, a Fiat 126.

I would defo give a T4 room in the fleet for a while though.  Must rank alongside the Rover 600ti as the best Q-car of EVAR.

Hmmm...thanks guys. Robin, that's a most glowing report!

And to be honest I'd rather have a crash in wheelbarrow than a 126.

Ooooooh. Thank you. Any chance you can copy and paste it for me Triggs, I'm banned from RR...

This about covers my experience of them, both in interest and handling:

I had a T4 CD.

Certainly the best car I've ever owned by a country mile. Real luxury, real performance.

Doubled my money on it too. Which was the only reason I let it go really.

I wouldn't bother win any other engine, seriously. You'll just be underwhelmed. Get a T4. They're cheap. Cheaper than a good T5, you'll eat less tyres and your grin will be just as big.

I agree mostly with Shitbeenz ^ ^ ^

I have an S40 as my temporary UK chariot.

Mine is the best* of both worlds, less economy than a diesel and less power then a T4. All the playaz dream of getting some Low Pressure Turbo respect.

The rank-mobile.

Other joys* include the worst stick-on faux wood seen since the melted Curlywurly dash from the Ebay Tat regular 306 saloon.

The bovine clothes that line the interior are hard wearing but unpleasant to the touch.

Any cow that possesses such tough, thick outer garments would remain to wander the earth and inter-breed with cockroaches long after a Nucular Katastrophy.

Everything else feels suprisingly flimsy, but I have known this car for nearly ten years and it has been almost faultless in that time.

The engine is nice and surgeful, the drive is tepid and if you try to put too much stuff in the boot, it won't fit.

I can also achieve very similar MPG to a diesel by simply not driving it.

In summary, buy one.

Or don't.

Surely the lure of looking as cool as me, V40ish, Broadbeenz and others is the clincher though.

OR, you could overkill.

Only two pedals to worry about too. Nice (If youre into that kind of thing.)

Thanks guys! By the sounds of it, this is just what she wants. I think her mind is pretty much made up now, it's just a case of finding the right one for the right price.

Do you think she'll notice if I take her to see an S80?

Back to the Ovlovs for just a moment.

I've driven a couple of S40s - dizzler and pez, and they were both pretty unremarkable. That said, the pez one I tried wasn't anything sporty, so maybe those versions are much better. They also felt strangely narrow for a car so big on the outside. If I had to sum them up I'd say they drove like a bigger MK5 Escort: OK, but nowt special.

A mate of mine had one for a few years as well. He's normally a car wrecker, who gets rid of cars when the drivers seat, steering wheel and gearstick are well worn, but the Ovlov seemed to withstand his bored, picking away at vinyl with his fingernails, attentions pretty well - so the interiors seem pretty robust. His was pretty reliable too, despite his outlook that MOTs are 'maintenance'.

See the other thread, I've had a V40 for years, and am happy with it, has been reliable. Known things-

Wiper spindle bushes wear out. Lift the wipers off the screen and check for wobble. Deteriorates to the point of when opening the bonnet, the trailing edge starts scraping the wipers. Worth checking on any potential purchase.

Dash bulbs like blowing, but are easy to replace.

Blower motor transistors can go - check blower operation.

Rear calliper problems caused by the handbrake actuator seizing or otherwise failing. In my car this hasn't meant a dragging calliper, it's meant no working rear brakes.

Lower radiator hose clip corrodes and fails, hose blows off and you lose the coolant.

Variable timing actuators fail, noises from top end (pez only)

Section of loom running under radiators is prone to corrosion and cause electrical maladies

1.8 GDI suffers from coking issues if constantly run on shite petrol

Dull to drive

Good crash rating - first four star motor, from when four stars were all you could get

Wrecked Mondeos may reverse into the drivers door

When driving in deep snow gear linkage can get so packed in with snow that you lose the ability to change gear

Thanks fellas, really helpful. Appreciate it :-)

I'd avoid the GDI, seen many a dead one at the back of a Volvo dealer workshop. 1.8, 2.0, 2.0T and T4 the best and long lived. Big spec for little money.

I've known a T4 (the hot one) S40 before. Was fugging brilliant. I'd be tempted, but possibly not a hot one. Certainly nice to sit in over long distances!

I think anything even approaching tepid will be a no-no :(
